Funniest Comedy of 2014

...or the category that still has me wondering what people actually consider funny.

The nominees are:

The Skeleton Twins
22 Jump Street
Obvious Child
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Neighbors

And the winner is...

Three of those aren't comedies.

To everyone but Lecter, I assume this category is still regarded as Best Comedy, i.e. the finest film which can be categorized as a comedy or a dramedy.

Which is why I am strongly considering to do away with it and with the Horror category. The point was to award films that are not awarded otherwise.

Best film on the list, but if we're considering it a comedy, it's the most depressing comedy made in quite sometime.

Yeah. Love the movie. But that category was weeeeeeird.

The horror genre has become a bit of a joke within the hardcore fandom. Every year there are a select few films that have gone against the grain and have still found a way to delight and scare the living hell out of the viewer while also giving hope for years to come. That's because of these 5 films and the director's desire to fright.

In Boyhood, Ethan Hawke delivers a touching 12-year performance. His turn deepens over the course of the film as his character grows from an absent and juvenile parent, reluctant to embrace responsibility for more than a day, to a steady father figure devoted to righting his past wrongs.



In Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence), Edward Norton exudes comic anxiety as a well-known actor whose ego and instability contrast with and undermine his energetic on-stage perfectionism.



In Gone Girl, director David Fincher wisely casts performer, playwright, and gospel-style entrepreneur Tyler Perry as a powerful lawyer as comfortable in front of a television camera as he in court, drawing on the actor's natural tendency toward oily-yet-charismatic salesmanship writ large.



In Foxcatcher, Mark Ruffalo tenderly portrays late Olympic wrestler and coach Dave Schultz, a gifted athlete and highly devoted family man drawn into a stranger-than-fiction web of ambition, mental illness, sport, and wealth by his troubled brother, also a wrestler.



In Whiplash, veteran character actor J. K. Simmons delivers a dynamic performance as a prestigious music teacher whose instructional style is defined by drill-sergeant ferocity. His eyes burn with red-hot intensity. He enters a room with the presence of a conquering army. His muscles tense if the tempo is not right. His transitions from detachment to fierce criticism and volcanic bluster are abrupt and frightening. In him, we see a charismatic monster of a man who just may forge (not inspire, but slice and sculpt) worthy musicians.

And the award for best supporting actor goes to:

They were all so good!

I wonder if enough people saw Whiplash. I didn't and went with Edward Norton because of it.
