What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Seriously? Wiig's career has gone nowhere, the film is never quoted or anything of that sort, and generally speaking, seems to have left almost no pop culture footprint to speak of. It's like the female version of Wedding Crashers.
Anybody else see that coming? I absolutely never hear about that movie any more, while at the time it seemed destined for classic status.

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Bridesmaids, like Wedding Crashers, was an unfunny and generic movie.
The whole "they are women, so it's fresh" excuse of an argument was invalidated when you had McCarthy having diarrhoea in a sink. I saw no difference to Sandler's pandering to common denominator zero there.
Also, why you single out Wiig is a mystery to me. McCarthy was the breakout star from Bridesmaids and continues to do well and get projects. Rose Byrne is also getting exposure even if she isn't up to Hollywood's standards of action hero or fat girl.

WTF are you talking about? My friends quote Bridesmaids practically on a daily basis.

lol wut?
My housemates and I quote it fairly often, and we've watched portions of it on cable several times in the last few weeks.
As for the complaints about the film itself: really? Are we still refusing to acknowledge that there's significantly more going on in the film than raunchy gags? It's well-written (it didn't get that Oscar nomination for nothing), and four years later, it still feels like an incredibly ballsy studio film for focusing on the changing dynamics in the protagonist's friendship, and for refusing to present a single character who conforms completely to the bland ideal romantic partner stereotypes to which 99% of major studio films adhere whenever there's a romance involved. Unlike most R-rated comedies, it feels like it actually has something to say about the way that people and relationships change over time.

And yet they could not resist writing a diarrhea scene, right?

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Are you joking? Everyone in my circle quotes this movie almost every time we're together. I have co-workers that do too. Maybe it's just the OP's circle that doesn't.
As for Wiig, I'm sure she'd be getting roles in a lot of big studio films (not that she hasn't - she was in Anchorman 2, a voice in Despicable Me 2, Walter Mitty, the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, etc...) if that's what she wanted but she chooses a lot of independent films. She might actually have one of the most versatile acting careers out there right now, juggling both mainstream and independent films. She is clearly doing things on her terms. She's the one who refused to do a Bridesmaids sequel. If she was just in it for the paycheck she wouldn't have. And I'll admit I do hope we'll get one someday. But it's definitely commendable that she's not selling out.

The Bridesmaids love must be a very American or English-language films. It does not have many fans here.

Yup, I believe so.
No one cared about it here either.
As for Webslinger's refute, just because Hollywood is awful at romantic comedies and female characters does not mean that something that does it marginally better, if at all, is worth talking about. All I saw was another brash, slapstick, loud American comedy- no different to its brethren with the exception of women doing the swearing, joking, fucking, shitting and so on, so forth. I didn't find that it had anything new to say.

Sorry Excel, you didn't poll friends of Libs or Magic Mike, so your points are invalid.

So what are the "recent" comedies that people are constantly quoting/mentioning today?
I love Bridesmaids though.

I cannot speak for the USA, obviously, but over here, The Hangover is huge as far as the cultural impact goes.

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
LOL, this is quoted all the time and is still hilarious. It's one of the most rewatchable movies ever and airs on TV all the time.
Also, the entire cast is doing more than fine for themselves. There's obviously McCarthy, Rose Byrne managed to establish herself in comedy because of this movie, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLevon-Covey who've had success on the television front, and Wiig, who is still definitely a 'name' despite being choosy with her recent projects.
Yeah, McCarthy is a major star, while Rose Byrne is doing very well for herself, despite never being THE NAME on a movie. And Kristen Wiig hasn't really had a high profile role since Bridesmaids to say she's failed. It's more like Rachel McAdams after 2005. She had some hits and with a few more roles lined up, she could have been a huge star, but she took a break and probably needed it to ground herself. Nothing wrong with choosing one's self over their Hollywood status.

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Wiig got an Oscar Nom too people, and two GG nominations. Kind of an odd thread, I feel like almost everyone involved with Bridesmaids has gone on to much better things
In the two and a half years Wiig has been in 12 films. Most have been hits to varying success out of her comfort zone. I hear Bridesmaids quotes and see in on TV all the time.
I never bought the whole "Wedding Crashers is so forgotten" claim either. I almost hear "Lock it up" "Just the tip" "Stage 5 Clinger" or "Mom the Meatloaf, Fuck!" on a pretty regular basis. "Crabcakes and football" all the time too! If anything no one mentions 40 year old Virgin or Knocked Up anymore.

The only comedy movie that I've heard quoted numerous times is Anchorman, and for several years, including myself. Also The Hangover but not really anymore.

This is one of the funniest scenes in any movie ever:
I remember crying I was laughing so hard when I first saw it
Actually, so is this

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Also, whatever, it's kind of tasteless, but I die at this scene every time:
"I think everybody has the flu!"
"You don't look very well, Annie" "I feel fine" "Are you sure, it wasn't that grey kind of lamb or maybe that weird chicken, was it that?" "No, I feel fine" "I think you'd just feel better if you just threw up" "I don't have to throw up" "You're not sick?!" "No, in fact, Helen, I'm...hungry...and I wish...I had a snack" "You're hungry?" "Starving!" "Mmm. Jordan almonds. These are great. Thank you"

Jesus, I got to 4 mins and 30 seconds and had to stop it. No wonder a two-bit comedy lasts for 2 hours and 5 minutes if 10 whole minutes are dedicated to an inane argument. But it was going somewhere at times. Still not going to watch the film unless someone I respect recommends it to me.
And the shitting scene. Not funny.

Re: What Happened to Bridesmaids?
Basically if you don't laugh at the airplane scene (Not the one above, the full scene) then it's not for you. That is definitely the highlight scene of the film.

That's not in the movie. It's a bonus feature on the DVD.

The aeroplane scene is not bad, but I didn't laugh. It could have been so much funnier.
