Post Re: Into the Woods
I don't really know about this one yet.

I was really into it at the theater, but I was wanting it to finish up soon after the Witch's transformation. And I really liked most of the songs while at the theater, however I don't really remember half, or more, of them now. I've only listed to "Into the Woods", "Agony", "Giants in the Sky" and "The Last Midnight" since last night.

Basically I found about every element of the film to be enjoyable at the theater, but forgettable the moment it was all over. I don't know if I'd actively watch it again after a rental.

B-. Some good songs, okay set designs, a few funny moments, and some credit goes to Rob Marshall for actually adapting this one into a decent film. And it's not easy singing many of Sondheim's songs (lots of breathing), but the cast did pretty well.

You seem to be the first person who didn't absolutely hate it and wasn't in love with it.

What is "strange" about it? It's pretty straight forward and not exactly "weird." It's a fairy tale. :P

Seeing it for a second time today, this time in RPX. I'm excited, it should sound amazing.

Red Riding Hood in general, especially that bizarre sequence of her entering the wolf, the wolf songl, what happens to the baker's wife in the end, the feel of the film... I could go on, it's just my opinion.

To me, the most apt word is disjointed. Yes, it is a fairy tale, but the various events and characters seem to bang uncomfortably into one another rather than flowing freely as if in a shared space.

How do you think it could have been better executed?

An F is a bit much though.

I agree but whatever. I was very surprised reading David's review but at least he explained the reasoning behind it.

I saw it again and still like it!

Watch zwackerm question every single person who makes a post in this thread for specifics on his/her opinion.

Anyhow:

Into the Woods doesn't quite reach the height of its potential, but it's probably about as good as a Disney-meddled adaptation could be. Even though there's still plenty of suggestive material that makes it past the PG radar, some of the material from the original show is whitewashed, and it dilutes the impact of the film's message about adult mistakes informing the lessons taught to children. Nevertheless, the bulk of the story and the music is intact, and it's well-executed. Best in show, unsurprisingly, is Meryl Streep. Streep devours the role with gusto, but amid said gusto, she nails the showstopping and emotionally-affecting "Stay with Me" in such a manner that she fully humanizes her character. Emily Blunt is also quite good as The Baker's Wife, Anna Kendrick is appropriately plucky as Cinderella, James Corden makes for an appealing and likable Baker (even though his arc is a little underdeveloped in the script), Chris Pine is deliciously brash as the vain prince, and child performers Lilla Crawford and Daniel Huttlestone hold their own with their more experienced co-stars in confident performances. The only significant misstep in casting is Johnny Depp, whose Jack Sparrow shtick is a distraction for all of his thankfully brief screen time. Even though the complexity of the musical's themes is a little weaker here than in its original iteration, it still successfully and powerfully deconstructs the morals and purposes of fairy tales, and much of the humor along the way is left intact. Purists may not be satisfied with what Disney has done with the material, but the original stage musical still exists for that purpose; this adaptation is a solid, consistently entertaining, and ultimately moving one.

I think part of the reason The Baker isn't as fleshed out here is due to "No More" being cut. After all, it is his one big stand out moment in the musical.

Anyway, I saw it again yesterday in RPX and it was a nice experience. That orchestra sounds just so damn amazing. Wonderful film.

Into the Woods works really well until it doesn't. It's like all the air comes out of the balloon as the movie nears its conclusion, despite stirring musical numbers such as "No One Is Alone" and "Last Midnight." The first half or so is really good, though. Top notch cast is strong all around: Meryl is superb as The Witch has never sounded this good, Emily Blunt is delightful, Anna Kendrick's natural charisma shines through the mostly flat Cinderella character, etc. I'd place this one in the middle tier of modern movie musicals. It doesn't reach dizzying heights of greatness (except for a couple of moments, such as the absolutely hilarious, energetic "Agony" number performed by Chris Pine), but it doesn't totally fall flat either. It has the same faults as the stage version but it's still fairly enjoyable for the most part as the performances and scenery are strong. I only wish it made more of an effort to make this version it's own instead of merely replicating what has already been done.

The songs mostly sucked. I think I liked the song from Cinderella on the stairs? But that's it. Emily Blunt, for as great as she is, wasn't really enjoyable in this. I guess I enjoyed Little Red Riding Hood the most, and am glad they killed off Depp so quickly.

It was not good. And it was boring.
