Taken 3 is probably going to do well but The Wedding Ringer doesnt look as good as Ride Along.

Ride Along looked good? The Wedding Ringer doesn't look great, but I'd say it certainly looks better than that did, but Kevin hart's star has cooled very fast. This should do in the range of The Best Man Holiday and Think Like a Man.

The Wedding Ringer looks like dogshit. I can't wait for it to come out so I never have to see the godawful trailer again.

Well its all subjective about what you think looks better but Ride Along certainly had more hype. Ice Cube is also more well known and popular with general audiences than Josh Gad. I dont think Hart's career as cooled down though. He might have the two highest grossing comedies until summer because Im sure Get Hard will be a big hit.

Neither Ride Along nor The Wedding Ringer appear to be any good from their trailers, but it's not about whether any of us here think they look good; it's about what hook exists to pull general audiences in. The difference between the two films is that Ride Along has an appealing, if unoriginal hook: guy who wants to marry his girlfriend first has to do a day on duty with her cop brother, and action-related hijinks ensue. The Wedding Ringer's hook is a guy helps friendless losers on their wedding day. There's just not anywhere near as much appeal, Kevin Hart's presence notwithstanding.

The Wedding Ringer looks awful for sure, but it will do well IMO. It won't come anywhere close to Ride Along numbers, but worst case scenario I see it finishing around TLAM 2.

The later half of January does look like shit, but this is why American Sniper and Selma need to completely dominate. Both could do $150M+ just because of the weak competition.

This January is strong and whoever thinks otherwise should think again.

Wow, Jan 16-18 could theoretically have a 40 million movie, a 30 million movie, 2 20 million movies and a 15 million movie.

After a dismal most of 2014, Christmas weekend already gave us a hint that better box office performances is back. We had a good weekend even without the $30-$60m that The Interview would've made if it was released in major franchise theater chains.

January 2015 look to have a lot of hits below, are we on the road to recovery? or will they also disappoint?

Paddington
Mortdecai
Selma (expansion)
Taken 3
The Wedding Ringer
Blackhat

Alex, do you ascribe to the belief that if the stock market and more specifically, stocks like Apple/Google, don't constantly rise then something is wrong?

yes if the stock market, including Apple/Google, don't rise over time at least on the rate of inflation then something is wrong. yes there will be peaks and valleys but long term should still be upward trend.

1st weekend - holdovers ruled but TWIB2 opened well
2nd weekend - Taken 3 opened well (3rd biggest Jan OW)
3rd weekend - Sniper (obliterated the Jan OW)

The 4th weekend doesn't even need a breakout because holdovers can still manage a huge weekend.
