Broken City
Broken CityQuote: Broken City is a 2013 American crime film starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. The film was directed by Allen Hughes and written by Brian Tucker. Wahlberg stars as a police officer turned private investigator, and Crowe stars as the mayor of New York City who hires the investigator to investigate his wife.
The film is Hughes' first solo feature film directing effort; he has collaborated with his twin brother Albert in previous films. Allen met Tucker in 2010 and learned about Tucker's spec script, which had languished in development hell since Mandate Pictures attempted to produce a film in 2008. Under a partnership between Emmett/Furla Films and Regency Enterprises, Hughes began production in 2011 in New York City and Louisiana. The film was released in theaters on January 18, 2013.

Re: Broken City
It's pretty ridiculous, and not in fun way. Without his brother, Hughes has trouble reining things in, and the film gets away from him on more than one occasion. The narrative is actually pretty interesting and well-constructed, the direction is just so overwrought and overdone that it basically ruins it.
Plus, Catherine Zeta-Jones is rather terrible in this. You can tell it was a paycheck job.

Re: Broken City
The first great film of the year. Its critics are wrong. Allen Hughes, flying solo for the first time after directing several films with his twin brother, including Menace II Society and From Hell, crafts an exciting, muscular, and old-fashioned detective tale indebted to the tough urban crime cinema of the sixties and seventies. A perfect cast in their comfort zone helps: Wahlberg is charming and tense as a down-to-earth, square-jawed detective turned private eye with a sinister personal history, and the dramatic voice and intimidating, ready-to-fight physical presence of Crowe (sporting a truly spectacular awful haircut) are both utilized well as the well-oiled and antagonistic populist mayor on a reelection rampage. The plot is not without predictable turns, but the film is such a pop pleasure from start to finish: Hughes turns scenes, even dialogue driven ones such as the second-act mayoral debate, into focused suspense showcases and creates an intoxicating general atmosphere of concrete-jungle unease. Similar to The Grey last year, this is a mid-tier January genre release with real flair, and it is a film I expect I will revisit more than once over the course of this new year.

Oh, and bonus point for the awesome, left-field scene where Wahlberg goes to his girlfriend's movie premiere and discovers it is this soft porn meets Nicholas Sparks type deal and gets PISSED.

Re: Broken City
As average as it could be. It felt sometimes like a made-for-TV thriller, only with a super-tanned Russel Crowe.

Broken City
Dull. Mark Wahlberg plays himself in every damn movie. I've grown tired of his youthful and smart-ass cop routine. So cool that his eye lids take twice as long as everyone else to open up. The man seems like he just doesn't want to be in these dumping ground January releases. Crowe was good, though. The film is just one big bore. It was much better when it seemed as though Zeta-Jones (also giving a terrible performance) was having an affair with the opposition's campaign manager. But then it goes and gets technical and political, and I lost interest. The movie-within-a-movie, Kiss of Life, seemed better than this bore-fest. I love me some kitchen bench doggie style!

Especially if it is Natalie Martinez on the kitchen bench.

I don't know. She's not that hot, in my opinion. But she has nice knockers and the scene seemed porny, so I'm in!
