Ha. And yeah idk what it says about me and my personal attitude toward infidelity that I even found myself rooting for Amy after the full reveal of how Nick had used her (albeit not from the beginning) and had planned to discard her.

I thought the scene where Amy recounts how she discovered the affair might have been the most resonant on an emotional level. I don't know how it is played out in the book, but the way Pike played the scene as if blindsided gives the impression that Amy mentally snapped after that.

I don't thinks she snaps though. I think she just reverts back to the mode she was in when she decided to ruin Scoot McNairy's life. And she's not exactly the most reliable narrator. Throughout the movie she narrates directly from the diary she specifically hides for the police to find. Is she just as reliable when she's talking with the girl at the cabins? She likes to butter-up stupid people (Casey Wilson is awesome). I guess we could call into question question McNairy, but who is more likely to lie, him or the girl with wild resentment issues toward her mother for rewriting her entire childhood.

Even though Nick's a complete asshole and doesn't deserve much sympathy, she doesn't deserve any either. She's played victim her entire life. Now she's mastered it. And a complete sociopath who will do anything to get her way.

Oh and one of, if not the best, movie of the year.

I would not blame anyone who does not have sympathy for either of them, but I don't think I would say she played a victim her whole life. From what I've gathered, the book goes into greater detail about how the whole Amazing Amy thing w/ her parents really fucked her up psychologically and set her on the path to become the calculating psychopath she is by the end.

Yeah you're right. I don't know why I said whole life. Her teens and her adulthood/romantic life is probably more appropriate.

And of course, my list

1. Zodiac (A+)
2. The Social Network
3. Se7en
4. Gone Girl
5. The Game (which is what I thought GG was shaping up to be about 30 minutes in)
6. Fight Club
7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (B+)
-----------------------------------------------
8. Panic Room (still need to give it another look) (C+)
9. Alien 3 (C-)

I still haven't seen Ben Button.

Post Re: Gone Girl
It's a supremely entertaining thriller from when it catches up on Rosamund Pike in present day on. And perhaps that helps outline the flaw in the film, while watching Amy on the run is ultra engrossing, the Nick and the cops plot is significantly less so, as great as Affleck is in the film. Not a fan of the Carrie Coon/Margo character, didn't see the warmth between her and Nick you'd expect from a supposed ultra-close twin relationship

Pike's performance is just brilliant, one of the best from a female I've seen from last few decades. So many layers, with a character who's performing a role to society at all times, as much with Nick as on the run. Yet the real Amy whatever is left, still comes out in some moments like emotionally like genuine lostness after getting robbed or her reaction to Nick slaying his TV interview.

Ultimately Nick is not near on the level of Amy for guiltiness in this situation, but he's still screwed up, doesn't really get it, etc.

Gone Girl

I'm glad I finally got around to seeing this. I cannot think of anything wrong with the film. It's pretty much a perfect crime thriller. I suppose the only thing I would have liked is that she got her comeuppance, but leaving it open is also chilling and mysterious. Rosamund Pike is sensational and Ben Affleck keeps it together really well until the end. Built like Batman, he could do some damage. But I was never convinced that he killed her or had anything to do with her disappearance. Then the reveal comes and she is fine. So I wasn't surprised by this. But the second reveal was where I enjoyed myself. Her coming back home and trying to play innocence. Great film-making.

I loved the way it was filmed, and the tone/atmosphere of the entire film reminded me of a 90s sex thriller mixed with some Fincher bad ass. It's really well presented, and the first few minutes had some lovely shots. But I am not sure how well it will hold up on repeat viewings. For now...

I kind of refuse to. The original trilogy is perfect. I see no reason to watch a scene-for-scene remake of a third of it.

It is a much superior film to the Swedish one, which was basically a made-for-TV flick. David will back me up on that.

But I think the Swedish film is an A. So you can understand that I'm not interested to waste time watching the same film from a new director. I've already seen that story told. No need to see it again. And I can't even see the whole story. Just a third of it. It's pointless to watch it, really.

I never really gave Fincher his due credit, but he really is a fantastic director. Gone Girl, The Social Network, Se7en and Fight Club are all terrific. It's clearly no fluke that he made them all. He's a talent and I am anticipating his next.

I love Fincher but wasnt as keen on Dragon Tattoo. Gone Girl on the other hand is just riveting. It's an odd film in that I couldn't get used to the tone at first (different to what I was expecting) but it gets so much right and the Fincher touches take it to another level.

List:

1. Zodiac A+
2. Seven A+
3. Gone Girl A
4. The Social Network A
5. The Curios Case of Benjamin Button A-
6. Fight Club A-
7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo B
8. Panic Room B-
9. The Game B- (need to see this again)

What a great director.

Yeah I saw it in 97 and was looking forward to it as it was Finchers follow up to Seven. I recall it being disappointing but will aim to see it soon and see if that sentiment remains.

Not as old as I thought, especially if you saw Se7en in cinemas in 1995! You're only seven years older than me, and I was only allowed to see 18+ movies in the cinema in 2004 (with The Passion of the Christ). But you saw Se7en 9 years before that, which means you must have seen it when you were underage.

Yeah I was 17 when I saw Seven. Was actually right after my final high school exam. Never got asked for ID ever though. I actually went to see Total Recall with my mum in late 91 only because Home Alobe was sold out. She hated it but I loved it. It was recommended by the teen selling tickets lol. I think it was R rated too.
