Recommend 10 Films To See Before You Die
If you had to recommend 10 films for someone to see before they died, what ten would you choose and why?

Re: Recommend 10 Films To See Before You Die
In no order...
American Beauty Brokeback Mountain Gone with the Wind Irreversible The Wizard of Oz Before Trilogy (Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight) The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) Halloween (1978) American Pie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
I obviously know many of these are not classified as the best movies of all time but they all mean a lot to me and as to why I adore film as much as I do and are some of the best of their respected genres, IMO.

Re: Recommend 10 Films To See Before You Die
Le cercle rouge (1970) Chungking Express (1994) Doctor Zhivago (1965) Forbidden Games (1952) Never Let Me Go (2010) Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) Roberto Rossellini's war trilogy: Rome Open City (1945), Paisan (1946), and Germany Year Zero (1948) Velvet Goldmine (1998)
A few because of their sense of cool and their hypnotic and/or romantic style. A few for their historical and social value, as well as their empathy. A few idiosyncratic favorites.

I am afraid you will hate it, but would still be interested to hear your thoughts.

The Wizard of Oz Sunset Blvd. Memento Donnie Darko Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie Fitzcarraldo H-8... The Birds El laberinto del fauno The Usual Suspects
A bit of everthing really. Some classics, some newer movies, various genres, Hollywood and European (not really all that familiar with Asian and Australia cinematography. Maybe I'd squeak Tasogare Seibei in the Top 10 though. I really love that one.)

Re: Recommend 10 Films To See Before You Die
I'm not sure what ten films I would choose, but I know Apocalypto would be one of them. For the rest, do I choose my favourites? in which case, I would just choose my top ten movies ever, or do I choose ten achievements in film or "special" films? It's a hard one. If I choose anything besides my personal top ten, it feels pointless me doing the recommending, because any fool can just search online for a "must see before you die top ten list" littered with industry classics. So that's the dilemma I face.
Perhaps choosing 1 or 2 films from the major genres. Or ten important films. I think that might be the best option. Choosing ten films that say something about us as humans or the culture we've created.

Re: Recommend 10 Films To See Before You Die
If I had to recommend I would recommend my favorite top 10 ever. And why? Because it's the movies that have given me the most enjoyment, and although people's taste differ from one to the other and there are other hundred movies with higher historical significance and better critical response, I find it hypocritical to recommend those if they didn't touch me emotionally as much as the ones on my list..

Well of course you're going to recommend movies that touched you and you love them. That's the point of recommendations. But I'd be considerate enough to at least mix it up a bit. Maybe not give my TOP 10 best movies ever. If I have a TOP 10 made out of war movies only do I really want to tell someone to see 10 thematically and/or visually very similar movies as the last movies they will ever see? I'd say no. Give them drama. Give them comedy. Give them mystery. Though my list is pretty close to being my TOP 10 list.

If you go to most of the top 10 critics movie lists, you will see that at least 7-8 of those selected are dramas. There are no comedies, horror, fantasy, war movies, biopics, westerns (sometimes The Searchers) or science fiction (sometimes 2001). If that person also loves war movies, than he wouldn't mind seeing the 10 best ever made.

Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 Mission to Mars Battlefield Earth Vampire Academy The Hottie and the Nottie Revenge for Jolly A Haunted House The Other Woman Alone in the Dark Dragonball: Evolution
Reason for my picks: once you watch them all (preferrably in a row), dying actually won't seem that bad anymore.
