None of the openers really exceeded expectations over the weekend, but they all performed well and gave the box-office a much needed boost.
>The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies debuted on top in gross thanks to its high avg. ticket price, but actually placed a disappointing 3rd over the weekend in admissions. The final film in The Hobbit trilogy opened with ¥287,085,500 ($2.5 million) and 195,209 admissions on 640 screens.
The debut is 30% higher than An Unexpected Journey, but 8% below that of The Desolation of Smaug. However, since it's back in December again legs will be much better than the second film and with a nice increase over the first film's opening, it's very likely The Battle of the Five Armies becomes the highest-grossing film in the trilogy. It should be able to reach the ¥2 billion milestone, but it could also just fall short with ¥1.8/1.9 billion. Expect a final total between ¥1.8-2.2 billion ($16-20 million).
>Ao Haru Ride pulled off the weekend victory in admissions, but its low avg. ticket price has it settling for a 2nd place debut. The latest teen romance film from Takahiro Mike grossed ¥243,368,800 ($2.1 million) with 210,497 admissions on 295 screens. The debut is 41% stronger than his Girl in the Sunny Place from last year, and with a December release, expect a gross that should exceed the ¥2 billion ($18-22 million) mark. Legs for these types of films very often approach multipliers of 10 in December, so it and The Hobbit should have a very close race.
>The latest Kamen Rider grossed ¥204,536,600 ($1.8 million) with 166,620 admissions on 307 screens for a 4th place debut. At least it opened above 200 million, but it's still down almost 9% compared to last December's release. The franchise has been on a downward spiral for over a year now, with the Spring/Summer/Winter releases all opening and earning less than their predecessors. This one should still barely break the ¥1 billion ($9-11 million) mark, though, which will make it a success.
>Aikatsu! The Movie was hard to follow over the weekend since its playing on just 151 screens, and the demographic could have really varied. But, it's clear now that the demo for these films should be similar to those of the Pretty Cure releases with its very, very low avg. ticket price. The film earned ¥172,727,250 ($1.5 million) with 156,949 admissions over the weekend, and it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.
>And finally, Gone Girl opened in 7th place, grossing ¥153,399,400 ($1.3 million) with 118,593 admissions on 321 screens. A 7th place debut may seem very disappointing here, but the gross is quite impressive. And legs are likely to be strong with the solid reviews and being a December release, so it too should be able to exceed the ¥1 billion ($9-11 million) milestone.

Most studios released their top films of the year on Monday, so consider the below chart nearly finalized. As the Gods Will looks to be the only one left that has an ongoing run for 2014 (that's above ¥1 billion).
The MPAJ will announce the full 2014 yearly results, including the final totals, in late January.

With 4 days to go until Yo-kai Watch aims for an all-time opening weekend record, here is how it compares to 2012's One Piece Film Z which broke the domestic all-time opening weekend record in admissions (and ranks #12 all-time):
I've tracked these specific theaters since 2011 and Yo-kai Watch is clearly way ahead of One Piece Film Z at the same point in time, and it's just not these locations either. Almost every location looks like the situation above and Sunday is looking just as strong, and possibly stronger once we get to that point. AND... it'll be playing in 15% more theaters than One Piece Film Z did!
No film has ever sold over 1.5 million tickets opening weekend, but Yokai Watch looks to make a serious play at it this weekend.

It's looking more and more likely that Yo-Kai Watch is going to break the long-standing (11+ years) All-Time Weekend Record based on this data. A lot of theaters are beginning to add more screens since they're nearly booked for Saturday (and Sunday, too). Any showtimes with a (/) next to it were recently added.
It's already sold over 1.1 million tickets in advance, the most in history, and it's outpacing One Piece Film Z by a significant amount before release. And by comparison, One Piece Film Z sold 650,000 tickets in advance.

We've estimated that ~60% of Saturday's available tickets across all of its theaters (~1.2/1.3 million seats) are now sold. So it should have nearly 700,000 admissions (maybe more) already for Saturday alone. There's going to be very few who can get a ticket at the door.

A lot of the Movix Cinemas, including those above, are also becoming nearly sold out (Miyoshi practically is now). All of those "Few Left" showtimes you see have less than 50 or so seats available. There should be a large increase in "Sold Out" showtimes by tomorrow.
And yesterday's newly added screens/showtimes began online sales this morning, so a large increase should be expected with tomorrow's update, too.

One Piece Film Z reportedly sold out 70% of its Saturday showtimes (as the day progressed), and Yo-kai Watch looks to be pretty close to that with 8 hours before its first showings begin.
It's probably safe to assume it's going to sell out at least 80/85% of its Saturday showtimes. Basically every showtime up to 9PM will be sold out across the country.
Right now, I'm predicting around 800-850,000 admissions on Saturday. Sunday should be just as strong as it's barely weaker than Saturday already (and kid films always perform better on Sundays), so I'm thinking an opening weekend of 1.6-1.8 million admissions as an early projection. It could potentially smash the opening weekend record rather than come close or barely claim it.
Toho should release something before it opens.

Yo-Kai Watch is finally here!
Dream5 and King Cream Soda put together a special video for the movie, performing their #1 singles from the Yo-Kai Watch television show:
There are already reports of standing times outside of theaters lasting over an hour; people having to wait 35 minutes to reach the concessions stand once inside the theaters, and much more chaos.

It's also estimated that 85% of all seats in the country are already full until the night showings.

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!, the first film in the massively popular Yo-Kai Watch multimedia franchise, is making a serious play at the setting a new All-Time Opening Weekend Record. It might even be hard to miss breaking the old record set by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003(!).
I'd almost call it a lock for the All-Time Opening Weekend in Admissions at this point. 2 million admissions over the weekend sounds completely ridiculous when 1 million admissions is very rare (just 1 film has even done that since 2007), and no film has ever sold more than 1.5 million tickets on opening weekend.... but it's honestly looking very, very likely that Yo-Kai Watch will shatter this record.
And Saturday and Sunday are so packed (literally every showtime across the country is selling out, I can't find any that hasn't yet), that some showtimes are nearly sold on Monday and Tuesday already. Maybe the film has ¥10 billion+ ($100 million) potential.
>Big Hero 6 is being dwarfed, but its doing quite well all on its own (though it's definitely benefiting from Yo-Kai Watch sell outs, too). It's not going to be another Frozen, that's for sure, but it looks like it may compare to some of Pixar's efforts like Wall-E or Up.
>The Vancouver Asahi, telling the story of the Japanese-Canadian baseball team formed in 1914, looks to be doing alright and is a solid alternative to any adults that wander into the madness of this weekend. If they aren't already taking their kids to see Yo-Kai Watch that is.

It looks to be one for the history books. It's practically doing the max capacity that the Japanese box-office allows a film to do in one weekend. Almost every theater is sold out for the entire weekend (with the spillover already causing Monday and Tuesday showtimes to sell out).
It's also doing all of this in just 347 theaters (about the max any films gets in Japan). I don't know if many are aware, but theater counts in Japan typically max out around 350.

A lot. I don't know if any opening record, whether its gross, admissions, PTA, etc. is safe this weekend.
Theaters have warned customers to show up 2 hours before their showing. And if you didn't buy a ticket in advance or hours before your showing, you're pretty much screwed because every showing is sold out/nearly sold out, and you'd need to wait until Monday/Tuesday or later.

It's also very strange that this film (and others like it) are only popular in Japan, and they go CRAZY for it. I mean, English films are usually most popular in the UK, but they are also shown and liked elsewhere. Same for Scandinavian and French films. But Japanese people have such an odd and acquired taste that even places close to them (such as China and Thailand) don't really like this stuff. Hong Kong is probably the next closest place to liking this, but still, look at the box office figures and that tells its own story; there are a few fans, but almost nothing. I suppose Hong Kong is liberal, modern, and Asian just like Japan is.
So this will make around $150m in Japan alone?

They've announced plans to localize Yo-Kai Watch in the West next year.
Yo-Kai Watch is very much a Japanese thing though, from its characters, humor, culture, etc.. Western audiences probably won't understand a lot of it, so and I don't think it'll be the next Pokemon outside of Japan... but we'll see if it catches on unlike a few other failed attempts over the past 10-15 years (none of them can compare to Yo-Kai Watch's success, however).
It took 16 years, but Japan has finally found its Pokemon replacement (and it might even be bigger). Merchandise sales are projected to exceed 40 billion ($350-400 million) for the year. And the second Yo-Kai Watch video game released this year will end up with over 5 million copies sold in Japan for the year (maybe closer to 6 million), which will be much higher than the last several Pokemon games. And the anime has been drawing in larger audiences than Pokemon shortly after it began airing at the beginning of the year.
Basically, ever since Yo-Kai Watch really kicked into overdrive back in the Spring, the Pokemon brand has seen drastic declines in every medium. Young audiences have seemingly abandoned it. Pikachu is no longer the mascot of many popular outlets. McDonald's have switched their annual calender releases to include Yo-Kai Watch now (even after printing the Pokemon ones), and more.
And Yo-Kai Watch's biggest audience is elementary aged children (3-6). So it's going to be around for quite some time (the second movie is already announced for next December, vs Star Wars, with plans to make it an annual release event).

I'm interested if when this film was announced, did people already know it was going to be huge? or is it a surprise just how much it has grown into a phenomenon?
And is Star Wars big in Japan? or is it now dropped like Pokémon?

Good grief. Its mid-day Saturday admissions here suggests it may be close to or over 400,000 admissions for Saturday already.

Yo-Kai Watch is currently outpacing the top debuts from earlier this year from the usual locations by...
2.68x greater than Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension 2.91x greater than Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends 2.96x greater than Stand By Me, Doraemon 2.98x greater than Frozen 3.30x greater than Maleficent
If it maintained a similar lead over these films throughout the rest of the weekend (and it could improve upon them), it's looking at an opening weekend around 1.7/1.8 million admissions, which would handily break the All-Time Opening Weekend Admissions Record by 200,000-300,000 admissions, and earn around ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) using Pokemon/Doraemon ticket prices.
However, since its avg. ticket price will be very low due to the volume of children attending, the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Revenue would still be in the air. The admissions record is likely to fall, but it'll needs closer to 2 million admissions I think to assure it takes the gross record from The Matrix Reloaded (¥2.22 billion), too.
Big Hero 6 is no slouch this weekend either, though I'm curious just how much Yo-Kai Watch is helping it from basically all its showtimes selling out. Right now, it looks like it could reach 400,000+ admissions over the weekend, and a gross above ¥500 million ($4.5-5 million). That'd be an impressive opening, no doubt, though again, just how much is it benefiting from spillover (the same applies to every other film, too).

There was certainly expectations that it would become a big franchise, similar to Doraemon/Detective Conan/Pokemon if they were lucky (Winter has lacked an annual event film), but I don't think anyone actually realized just how big it would become until the second game release sold 1.3 million copies in 3 days, and 500,000 advance tickets (the initial supply) were sold for the movie in 2 days back in July.
Toho has released their report, but it only talks about, mostly known, ticket sales. Toho says the film sold 1.06 million tickets at the box-office ahead of today, and when combined with online ticket sales, vending machines, etc.., advance tickets exceeded 2 million.
Toho almost always releases an afternoon report for their big releases, comparing it to another big film at the same point in time, so hopefully they release another report soon.
Regarding Star Wars... each prequel dropped in gross/admissions from the previous entry, but still each grossed over ¥9 billion. The franchise is still popular I believe, but if it drops off further, it should be minimal.
