Slavery and the Voting Rights Act. Yep, they're almost the same!

They are not the same, but they're certainly similar.

Big Eyes' reviews are showing up, and not seeing it as a big contender: http://www.indiewire.com/article/review ... c-20141114

Selma is a legit Best Picture winning threat

Yeah, Selma has definitely changed the game. If everything clicks for it, we could be looking at our first December release to win Best Picture since Million Dollar Baby ten years ago.

At this stage, what else is a strong contender? I'll admit that Boyhood could ride the critical wave, but it seems too small and too experimental to win Best Picture. Unbroken is a wild card (and it's in a period that Academy voters love), but these Oscar-destined prestige pieces rarely seem to work out on a Best Picture-winning level. Birdman could also get some critical love at the end of the year, but it's so comedic, meta, and critical of Hollywood that I could see it turning voters off. Selma, on the other hand, is a period piece and would still look like a relatively progressive winner, especially since the win for 12 Years a Slave seems as though it just barely fell into place last year given the number of statuettes that Gravity picked up.

Ehh I still can't see Selma being a huge Oscar player. I mean it'll get some more nominations now probably but I still don't see it as a major threat.

It's not necessarily an appropriate comparison, but I'm thinking Ferguson and the constant mention of MLK Jr are making Selma even more relevant and a stronger position to win BP. 12YAS could feel long ago by the time the awards season starts.

Unbroken's reviews are appearing: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/unbroken_2014/. Could get a nom like War Horse did, but doesn't look to be a contender for the win.

Seems set for a Boyhood vs. The Imitation Game vs. Selma race.

Yeah, I'd agree. Imitation Game has the British contingent but I'm not sure it has quite the acclaim that King's Speech did to actually win the big prize.

I see it coming down to Boyhood vs. Selma, with TIG in third.

I believe Birdman is in third, then The Imitation Game.

It will be the Imitation Game definitely if Selma and Boyhood are its competition.

I kinda agree with that line-up, but I would not rule out a late Gone Girl resurgence, being a huge audience favorite and Fincher being overdue. Could pull an Argo.

GG is going to have to win some stuff for something before I think it can break into that top 3. Argo won at least a few critic awards.

But that's the whole point to predict it before it starts becoming slightly more obvious ;) Though Argo didn't win any major critics awards before the Globes, IIRC. Just some smaller ones.

Instead of making a thread about 2015...

Leo will finally win Best Actor for The Revenant.

Gone Girl is a smash hit and has the zeitgeist-y thing in its favor, but I doubt it would ever win Best Picture (a nom, sure). It just really doesn't fit the mold.

Even though I believe Gone Girl is easily the superior film, it is absent one key element of Argo's rise: the Hollywood-players-as-geopolitical-heroes uplift.

I haven't seen Gone Girl but Argo isn't even half as good.

Yeah. It does, however, have a way more overdue director and is an even bigger hit and apparent crowd pleaser.

I think Whiplash will surprise some people. I see it getting four noms now:

Picture
Supporting Actor
Screenplay
Sound Editing (or Mixing)

It could upset like Beasts of the Southern Wild and get a Director nod too. Maybe both Sound noms.
