I always had the Underworld franchise as my answer to this question until I missed Awakening. So I was racking my brains and the other day it came to me. I've seen all Jurassic Park movies at the cinema, as well as all Terminator movies. I think it's important that the franchise has over 3 instalments before including it.
So for me it's 2 franchises. Over three instalments? But by your criteria Jurassic Park doesn't count then. Don't be anal. You know what I meant. Franchises with 3 or more instalments. I'm not Mike, why would I be anal with you?

Re: Is there a franchise that..
Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition - technically; as a kid, I sometimes fell asleep at nighttime showings, and even though I was a Star Wars fan and wasn't bored, I was fighting to stay awake during Empire and slept through a big portion of Jedi) Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Toy Story 1-3 (and even though I think Toy Story 4 is unnecessary, I will almost certainly see it anyway because I still show up for every Pixar movie that doesn't involve Cars) The Lord of the Rings trilogy The Dark Knight Trilogy
Soon to be added to the list: The Hobbit trilogy
Not sure if this one qualifies: Back to the Future trilogy (marathon this past summer; I was born in 1987 and didn't see any of them in theaters originally)
Before On Stranger Tides, I had seen the Pirates of the Caribbean "Elizabeth Swan/Will Turner trilogy", but since I didn't see OST, Pirates no longer qualifies today.

And Mr. Bean I went out of my to see the 2nd film so many years later. You're only going to count 3/8 Theatrical Batman films Only did it because Algren did too. And you might very well die before seeing Taken 3 or the third Robert Langdon, so that is not a good explanation. If I keep typing up all the two-film-franchises I have seen in my life, I'd still be typing. All I did was look at the franchise list at BOM. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. I'm feeling pretty good though, I think I have enough positive Karma to at least last up to SW and BVS. I didn't include any franchises I saw in theaters but not in the original run. I wonder if there is anyone here who has seen every Bond or Star Trek film in theater. That would be cool.

I don't think it can realistically be called a franchise with only two entries.

I know that once you have two restaurants of the same name they call it a franchise. I think the actual definition goes back to corporate branding. Any time you use a brand's name to make money or profit you are in fact franchising.

Re: Is there a franchise that..
2 films would constitute a franchise yes.
You could even make the case for 1 film being a franchise if it branches out to merchandise, theme parks, broadway shows, TV etc. something like Frozen for example. Offcourse these franchises never remain as a single film for long.

Re: Is there a franchise that..
Nah, the meaning is different for films. I've never heard anyone refer to, say, Shiloh as a franchise. I'll stick to my three-film definition.

Re: Is there a franchise that..
Ive never heard of Shiloh lol. That's probably why its never been mentioned as a franchise.
A single film would have to be a monster to be a franchise within itself - ie. instead of making more money with other films, it generates other streams based on the brand.

Well then it's not a film franchise.

Re: Is there a franchise that..
Shiloh has had like 3 sequels. Of course it's a franchise. That's like saying Tremors or Land Behind Time aren't franchises because only one film went theatrical.
For the purposes of this thread though, DTV films while franchises don't qualify because we're talking about seeing them in theaters.
New question: What's everyone's favorite franchise that they never saw a single film in theaters? I'd probably go the original Universal Horror movies:
4 Frankenstein films 2 Dracula Films 1 Wolf man film 4 Crossover films (House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein)

Re: Is there a franchise that..
I can't remember if I saw Lethal Weapon 4 in theaters or not, I was only 11.
Sigourney Weaver Alien Quadrilogy almost wins for me even with the second two films. In Bold are ones I've never even seen an entry (Or all the way through) But here are the franchises I've never seen a single entry in theaters. Leaving out under 3 film franchises because there are far too many 2 film series I never saw in theaters.
1. Fast and the Furious 2. Hannibal Lecter 3. Jaws 4. Psycho 5. Back to the Future 6. Mad Max 7. Man with No Name 8. Paranormal Activity 9. Crocodile Dundee 10. Spy Kids 11. The Godfather 12. Dirty Harry 13. Final Destination 14. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 15. Cheech and Chong 16. Police Academy 17. Pokemon 18. Poltergeist 19. Child's Play 20. Phantasm 21. El Mariachi 22. Friday 23. Conan 24. Major League 25. House Party 26. Hellraiser 27. Universal Soldier 28. Highlander 29. Missing in Action 30. Monty Python

1. Fast and the Furious 2. Hannibal Lecter That's pretty surprising. I even saw Fast Five, Fast Six and Red Dragon.

1. Fast and the Furious 2. Hannibal Lecter That's pretty surprising. I even saw Fast Five, Fast Six and Red Dragon. Hate Vin, we can add Riddick to that list too. Though I did enjoy Pitch black. I've only recently seen FF1, parts of 4 and 5, and all of Fast Six. I was too young to see Hannibal, and I hated it when I saw it, and by that time Red Dragon was coming out and didn't get into it until around 2005. I didn't see too many R rated films in theaters until about 2004. Saw Reloaded and T3 the summer before though. I think Scary Movie and Collateral Damage were the only R rated films I ever saw in conventional theaters before I was 16, everything else was Blockbuster Video. Though I think I did see Air Force One/ George of the Jungle double feature at a drive in in PA back in 97.
