Oh, I understand it. You just say my name when you disagree with me strongly. I just really have no interest in foreign animated films because all of the ones I have seen I have not liked.

But zwackerm, why don't you like foreign animated films? Is it because they are in a different language?

I have a friend who didn't like Inglorious Basterds because he had to read during it.

While I understand the frustration at reading during a film, I disagree and have never had the same issue. However, if I have free time and can watch a foreign movie or an English-language movie, I would opt for the latter. But not liking Inglourious Basterds is a sin.

Add in Song of the Sea and Princess Kaguya, and there's the category?

Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2
The LEGO Movie
Princess Kaguya
Song of the Sea

Or possibly a surprise nomination and win for Dorothy's Return to OZ.

Swap out LEGO MOVIE for BOXTROLLS and I'd say this is the closest I ever came to "calling" something. (Did anyone anticipate a LEGO snub?)

There are those folks and you just can't change their thinking on it. Their loss.

Lego should have won. Dragon was good, but its execution is very poor in comparison to the wonderful world it creates and its original premise with limitless potential.

Go Big Hero 6!

Post Re: Best Animated Feature 2014
Out of the two nominees I've seen, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is miles ahead of the very beautiful, yet spiritually inert How to Train Your Dragon 2.

I imagine I'll enjoy Boxtrolls (LOVE Coraline and really enjoyed ParaNorman), but don't expect it to be any sort of real threat in this category. Also loved Secret of Kells so I'm greatly anticipating Song of the Sea, which seems even more gorgeous and soulful. (Hoping it pops up in a theater somewhere around GR, MI). Can't seem to give a fuck about Big Hero 6.

However, with my limited knowledge, I could honestly see any of these winning, except for Boxtrolls. Tale of Princess Kaguya is unrepentantly sad, but it's simply, simply beautiful, and a deeply resonant & melancholic ode to the fleeting joys in life, and life's terrible brevity. If enough people see it, it could upset the bigger money makers (BH6, HTTYD2). Perhaps its just me, but I tire of the busy, overwhelming CGI spectacle in a lot of animated movies these days. Kaguya is a human-made work of art, whether you love it or not.

Kaguya is also not very good.

Oscar voters just vote for the most popular film that their grandkids are talking about, not the best, with the exception of Spirited Away.
