With 14.2M Friday, I'd say DDT makes around 37M for the weekend (though hitting 40M isn't out of the question). BH6 is headed for low-mid 30's with that number, but it looks like DDT will be #1 unless it has a significant drop Saturday.

The opening for Beyond the Lights is disappointing. The best it could do with that number is 8M for the weekend. However, it's A cinemascore and good reviews could help it hold on a while.

It's not exactly horroble :P. Launching in that many theaters it wasn't likely to have a killer average.

Solid for BH6. Slightly ahead of WIR. If it mimics WIR for rest of its run, it'll get to 200m.

I agree that Dumb & Dumber To's opening is excellent (although a tepid B- CinemaScore isn't great news), but I wouldn't call Rosewater's opening horrible. It's not the most appealing subject matter in the world and it doesn't have any Oscar heat; a $3,500 average is OK, but not that great.

Rosewater's opening day is disappointing given Jon Stewart's attached and the fact it had a significant amount of advertising for a limited film.

Have to wonder how the Interstellar numbers break down between IMAX and non-IMAX. I'd hazard a guess that IMAX is down 20-25%, so you're probably looking at 50%+ in non-IMAX.

Very good for D&D2! It's a major win and I expect we'll see more early 90's properties come back soon.

Horrible Bosses had really good wom, so should be interesting to see how well it opens.

Just throwing some numbers around:

28% Imax share last weekend -> $13.3 m
If down 20%, say -> $10.64 m

Non-Imax last weekend 72% -> $34.2 m

Based on the weekend drop to $27 m this weekend, say that's $16.36 m for non-Imax, that's a drop of 52.2%.

So with these rough estimates, 39.4% of Interstellar's box office would come from Imax and total weekend drop of say 43.2%...

Carrey would probably jump at the chance to make a sequel to The Mask now :P.

sub-45% drop for Interstellar is quite good. I wonder how Foxcatcher did.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dumb and Dumber plays like a family film. There were loads of families seeing it at my theater last night.

Not gonna lie: I'm pretty shocked by that Dumb & Dumber To number (and I shouldn't be, considering that I live in the one city where it's arguably a bigger event than it is anywhere else in the country). I know that the first movie was beloved in its time and still held in high regard by the people who enjoyed it then, but the track record for long-delayed sequels has been so bad that this one would follow suit. Evidently not.

Interstellar held up a little bit better than I was expecting. I'm guessing that there's probably a very significant discrepancy between its hold in IMAX venues and everywhere else.

Big Hero 6 got hit a bit harder than Wreck-It Ralph at the same point, but it's still in good shape, and should be able to take the top spot today, although it will still fall a few million shy of Dumb & Dumber for the weekend.

Oh nooooooooooooooo! :disgust:

Well, Jurassic World was already in production, but that came from an early 90s property. I hope this doesn't now add momentum to the Cliffhanger remake idea. But I can definitely see The Mask 2 and Ace Ventura: Born Three being on Jim Carrey's wish list now.

I could see this too. I went with my family today and they loved it. And I do swear I heard 5 year olds laughing hysterically. While I think 40 is safe. I would not be surprised at a wild hogs type mult and hit 46+ for the weekend.

I wonder what it could have opened to 10 years ago, 75+

I wonder how a sequel to There's Something About Mary would do. The original was one of the leggiest comedies ever.

I don't think as well, road trip comedies are always an easier sell. As is Carrey. It's hard to believe it's been 6 years since he starred in a mainstream comedy

Well, not very well, I'd predict. Dumb & Dumber, as a title, isn't plot specific. But There's Something About Mary kinda was, and that story was told already, so any sequel would just look desperate and thus bomb. It's the same feeling I have with a sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Slumdog Millionaire.

A Slumdog Millionaire sequel won't happen and yes, My Big Fat Greek Wedding's sequel will not do very well because the first film's success was a fluke, IMO, it was very random.

MBFGW has a legacy even if subtle that is still playing a role in movies we see. It's not a surprise that studios have made huge efforts to appeal to an increasingly diverse domestic audience in the mid 2000's to international audiences later that decade and now as its led to big business.

Box office wise definitely an unheard of once in a lifetime type run. But looking at movies like Bend It Like Beckham, Crouching Tiger, MBFGW, and Fast and the Furious seemed as precedessors for the huge shift in Hollywood and becoming more diverse.

So a fluke yes, but I think there are still signs of how just a movie could resonate. As demonstrated by its cancelled tv show though, it will be lucky to get 20% of its predecessor.

While they ended up not being, weren't Mr. Poppers Penguins and Burt Wonderstone meant to be mainstream?
