Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/08-09)
And it just turns out that Miyazaki did come at the request of Lasseter. Had it been anyone else, he surely wouldn't have.
And great post! I've said it once before, and I'll say it again... You should post here more often! You share a lot of knowledgeable content.
Here are some of the tweets from the ceremony, too:

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (11/08-09)
Weekend Ranking (11/08-09)01 (03) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 2 02 (--) Twilight Sasara Saya (Warner Bros.) DEBUT 03 (02) Clover (Toho) Week 2 04 (01) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 2 05 (04) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 2 06 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 5 07 (07) Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 5 08 (12) HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 5 09 (11) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 14 10 (10) Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 4
Quite the interesting weekend here.
>Beauty and the Beast rises to 1st place for a big victory here. It exceeded expectations last weekend and debuted in 3rd, but manages to hold on quite well to capture the #1 spot in its second weekend earning ¥114,272,300 ($1.02 million) with 82,085 admissions. It should continue to have a very leggy run as it's not likely to lose hardly any screens for weeks given its low initial count and this weekend's #1 ranking.
>Twilight Sasara Saya debuts in 2nd place, though it did win the weekend in a very close admissions race (just 55 admissions!). Playing on 264 screens, the film grossed ¥108,366,000 ($970,000) with 82,140 admissions. A pretty mediocre start, but let's see how it holds through the month.
>Close Range Love holds fairly steady and grosses ¥46,003,200 ($410,000) with 37,705 admissions in its 5th weekend, bringing its total above the ¥1 billion milestone to ¥1,009,330,800 ($9.2 million) with 819,430 admissions.
>Stand By Me, Doraemon rises back into the Top 10! It spent 12-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 before falling to 11th last weekend, so this makes its 13th non-consecutive week in the Top 10 now. After 14-weeks in release, it has grossed a huge ¥8.21 billion ($78.9 million) with 6.18 million admissions.
>And HappinessCharge Precure! also rises back into the Top 10 as well. Pretty much all the films skewing to an older audiences were bumped off for it and Doraemon to increase.
>Sabotage opened very poorly and missed the Top 10. I'll post the numbers when they're available (it placed 13th), Algren, don't worry.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (11/08-09)
Thanks Corpse! Although I don't post I regularly follow/read your excellent reports/commentaries in this thread. I love movies regardless of country of origin, but I'm especially a big fan of the Japanese Cinema (about Kurosawa and Miyazaki I have almost everything that is written/published on English language and I read/have many more books on Japanese Cinema), so with a special interest I follow/read everything you write about Japanese Films. Also, of course, it is always interesting to read about and observe the success of the US (or non-Japanese) movies and filmmakers in Japan. At the end a bit more about Hayao Miyazaki. Given the fact that Miyazaki and Kurosawa are the only two Japanese awarded with an Honorary Oscar, well, let's go back to 1993. Unprecedented amount of talent and genius in one room during Miyazaki - Kurosawa conversation:

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (11/08-09)
Have you heard of or seen Yoji Yamada's work? He's not nearly as famous as Kurosawa or Miyazaki, especially outside of Japan, but he's been a major director in Japan since the 1960s. Four of his films have won the Best Picture Academy Prize in Japan, and he himself has won Best Director three times.
And a more modern director who is definitely making a name for himself is Takashi Yamazaki. Recently, he directed the major blockbusters hits The Eternal Zero, and Stand By Me, Doraemon which is still doing blockbuster numbers. Both films highlight his strengths as a good writer and visual effects maestro, and have set various records over the past year. For starters, The Eternal Zero became the most-attended live-action Japanese film since 2003's Bayside Shakedown 2, and the most-attended original film since 1983's Antarctica. And Stand By Me, Doraemon has become the highest-grossing animated film ever not released by Disney or Studio Ghibli.
Before these recent blockbuster hits that seems to prove his name is a major draw for today's audiences, he's directed the Always trilogy which earned him a Best Picture and Best Director Academy Prize, as well as many other awards, and provided strong box-office returns as well (The Eternal Zero will be eligible for this year's Japan Academy Prize, and I expect it'll have a strong showing, too) . He also directed Japan's first ever full-length CGI feature film, Friends: Naki on Monster Island, in 2011.
Takashi Yamazaki's films are breaking boundaries in Japan's film industry for their visuals, and they're being very well-received by critics and audiences alike, in addition to becoming blockbuster hits now. He's also a very diverse director, doing live-action and animation, and being the first one to ever delve into the CGI genre. I think all he needs is one or two more acclaimed blockbusters before it's safe to claim him as Japan's next great director, following in Kurosawa and Miyazaki's footsteps.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (11/08-09)
Corpse wrote: Have you heard of or seen Yoji Yamada's work? He's not nearly as famous as Kurosawa or Miyazaki, especially outside of Japan, but he's been a major director in Japan since the 1960s. Four of his films have won the Best Picture Academy Prize in Japan, and he himself has won Best Director three times. I saw/have 12 Yamada's movies: "The Twilight Samurai", "The Hidden Blade", "Love And Honor", "Our Mother", "Tokyo Family", the first 3 instalments of "Gakko" series ("A Class to Remember", "Learning Circle" and "The New Voyage") and a few of his earlier works, "Flag in the Mist", "Home From The Sea" and "The Village" and of course his only movie with Toshiro Mifune "Tora-san Goes North" from "Tora-san" series. Great director and it's a shame because his opus aren't more accessible outside of Japan. Corpse wrote: And a more modern director who is definitely making a name for himself is Takashi Yamazaki. I haven't watched Takashi Yamazaki's recent works, the movies about which you wrote a lot in recent months/year - "The Eternal Zero" and "Stand By Me, Doraemon", they are still too new, but I am really looking forward to see them. However, I saw/have some of his earlier works: "Returner", "Space Battleship Yamato" and "Always: Sunset on Third Street". "Returner" and "Space Battleship Yamato" are visually top-notch and they are super fun, entertaining. I would say, visually they are on a par with the best blockbusters from Hollywood. I am the most impressed with his "Always: Sunset on Third Street" which is IMO really, really great movie. The 2nd and 3rd "Always" I haven't seen yet. By the way, of the newer generation of Japanese filmmakers I am very impressed with everything from Makoto Shinkai. Mamoru Hosoda is IMO also great (among others you wrote a lot about him and his "Wolf Children").

Re: Japan Box Office: 2014 Charts Updated (As of 11/09)
You have a lot of Japanese Cinema knowledge, that's for sure!
Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosada are indeed both great. Shinkai is still quite young and only needs that one breakout film to make it big. As of now, he's still too niche I feel. Although I know he has a fanbase outside of Japan, especially for The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters Per Second.
And Hosada pretty much got his big break with Wolf Children. Following strong receptions from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars, he followed them up with an equally received film that did very well at the box-office and award ceremonies, and garnered international attention. It's rumored he has a new film coming out next year, which should be announced next month if true (most major movie announcements come in December each year). A lot of people in Japan do view him as Miyazaki's successor in the market, but that is certainly a high bar to set.

Re: Japan Box Office: 2014 Charts Updated (As of 11/09)
I haven't done this before, but here is an interesting way to compare films (Per Screen Avg.).
Basically, the figure is how much a film earned per screen (at its widest) at the end of its run. For example, The Eternal Zero grossed ¥8.74 billion ($84.9 million) playing on 430 screens, resulting it it earning about ¥20.325 million ($197,442) on average per screen. This method is also easy to do in Japan because the majority of films maintain a constant screen count until late in their runs (usually 6 weeks+ or until they fall out of the Top 10).
The only requirement to chart is having an opening weekend above ¥100 million (~$1 million). Films that open under this mark are generally harder to track after just a couple weeks in release and often lose screens quicker.
Best Per Screen Averages (Totals) - 2014
PSA ¥ ($) [Screen Count] - Film ¥34,220,430 ($335,349) [744] - Frozen [Final] ¥25,768,025 ($247,335) [319] - Stand By Me, Doraemon [14 Weeks in Release] ¥20,325,581 ($197,442) [430] - The Eternal Zero [Final] ¥16,410,256 ($158,974) [39] - The iDOLM@STER Movie [Final] ¥12,917,933 ($125,227) [329] - Lupin III vs Detective Conan [Final] ¥11,994,135 ($117,595) [341] - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension [Final] ¥11,890,660 ($113,667) [439] - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno [Estimate] ¥11,585,100 ($111,427) [35] - Mobile Suit Gundam UC: Episode 7 - Over the Rainbow [Final] ¥10,207,373 ($100,230) [434] - Thermae Romae II [Final] ¥10,061,633 ($97,689) [649] - Maleficent [Final] ¥9,916,897 ($97,229) [361] - Doreamon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party [Final] ¥9,862,068 ($91,954) [435] - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends [9 Weeks in Release] ¥8,013,245 ($74,503) [302] - Hot Road [Estimate] ¥7,843,137 ($76,470) [357] - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie [Estimate] ¥7,719,869 ($72,312) [307] - Lupin III [Estimate] ¥7,474,402 ($72,354) [293] - The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji [Final] ¥7,418,655 ($71,800) [461] - Memories of Marnie [Estimate] ¥7,330,210 ($71,428) [427] - Godzilla [Estimate] ¥6,638,297 ($64,893) [94] - Tiger & Bunny: The Rising [Final] ¥6,437,125 ($61,676) [334] - Partners the Movie 3 [Final] ¥6,197,183 ($59,859) [284] - The Liar and His Lover [Final] ¥5,976,095 ($57,768) [251] - Mission Impossible: Samurai! Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast
Weekend Forecast (11/15-16)
01 (--) ¥160 million ($1.38 million), 0, ¥160 million ($1.38 million), As the Gods Will (Toho) NEW 02 (--) ¥140 million ($1.20 million), 0, ¥140 million ($1.20 million), Paper Moon (Shochiku) NEW 03 (01) ¥82 million ($0.71 million), -28%, ¥670 million ($5.8 million), Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 3 04 (02) ¥66 million ($0.57 million), -39%, ¥290 million ($2.5 million), Twilight Sasara Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 2 05 (03) ¥63 million ($0.55 million), -36%, ¥625 million ($5.4 million), Clover (Toho) Week 3 06 (04) ¥46 million ($0.40 million), -43%, ¥560 million ($4.9 million), The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (05) ¥30 million ($0.26 million), -34%, ¥1.09 billion ($9.8 million), Close Range Love (Toho) Week 6 08 (06) ¥27 million ($0.23 million), -41%, ¥370 million ($3.2 million), Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 3 09 (07) ¥22 million ($0.19 million), -30%, ¥1.12 billion ($10.0 million), Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 6 10 (08) ¥20 million ($0.17 million), -35%, ¥8.25 billion ($79.2 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 15
Wake me next weekend when Interstellar opens... or even Parasyte Part 1 (dir. Takashi Yamazaki) the following weekend since Interstellar may only do Edge of Tomorrow numbers. Its mixed reviews and lukewarm box-office numbers look like they really hurt it because early signs aren't looking too good.
The Attack on Titan recap movie special opening next weekend isn't being released by Toho like the live-action films will be next year, so it's only getting a limited release which will really limit it (although the franchise is huge, and a limited release could still post an impressive opening... we'll see, it still has a lot of potential).
Back to this weekend... As the Gods Will (dir. Takashi Miike) and Paper Moon will be fighting for the top spot and morning/afternoon ticket sales have them pretty close. Both films however don't look like they'll reach ¥200 million over the weekend, which means the box-office will have gone 7 weeks now without a film opening over the mark. October releases often struggle to open to that level, but this streak is pretty terrible. At least it'll finally be ending soon.
The most interesting note this weekend is that Stand By Me, Doraemon is looking good for another weekend in the Top 10, which if it manages to make it, will give it 14 non-consecutive weeks in the Top 10.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/15-16)
Saturday Admissions (Usual Locations)
24,055, 0, As the Gods Will (NEW) 17,361, 0, Paper Moon (NEW) 11,970, -27%, Beauty and the Beast (Week 3) 8,764, -29%, Clover (Week 3) 7,848, -42%, Twilight Sarasa Saya (Week 2) 5,277, -44%, The Expendables 3 (Week 3) 3,958, -36%, Close Range Love (Week 6) 2,747, +359%, Black Butler: Book of Murder (Week 3) 2,711, -53%, Dracula ZERO (Week 3) 2,265, -46%, Grace of Monaco (Week 5) 1,840, -54%, Cape Nostalgia (Week 6)
As the Gods Will performed quite well in the evening/night. It still doesn't look strong enough to open with ¥200 million, but maybe ¥175/180 million can be achieved. Not too bad, and that could be the best opening in 6/7 weeks.
Pretty impressive for Black Butler: Book of Murder. The second episode was released this weekend, resulting in the large increase. This is a 2-episode OVA adapted from the anime's Murder Case Arc that is receiving a limited theatrical release ahead of its home video release early next year. But given most of its few screens are from the usual locations, don't expect to see it in the Weekend Top 10.
Stand By Me, Doreamon is pretty far down in ranking at 20th (a lot of concert broadcasts and other limited releases are above it for the day), but only 300 or so admissions separates it from 12th place. And since Doraemon is only down 30% from last Saturday and always sees huge Sunday increases, I still think it'll make the Weekend Top 10 once again.

Weekend Estimates (11/15-16)
01 (--) ¥185 million ($1.60 million), 0, ¥185 million ($1.60 million), As the Gods Will (Toho) NEW 02 (--) ¥125 million ($1.11 million), 0, ¥125 million ($1.11 million), Paper Moon (Shochiku) NEW 03 (01) ¥80 million ($0.69 million), -30%, ¥670 million ($5.8 million), Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 3 04 (03) ¥71 million ($0.61 million), -28%, ¥630 million ($5.5 million), Clover (Toho) Week 3 05 (02) ¥62 million ($0.54 million), -43%, ¥280 million ($2.4 million), Twilight Sasara Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 2 06 (04) ¥44 million ($0.38 million), -46%, ¥555 million ($4.9 million), The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (05) ¥30 million ($0.26 million), -34%, ¥1.09 billion ($9.8 million), Close Range Love (Toho) Week 6 08 (06) ¥21 million ($0.18 million), -55%, ¥360 million ($3.1 million), Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 3 09 (08) ¥18 million ($0.16 million), -44%, ¥8.24 billion ($79.1 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 15 10 (09) ¥17 million ($0.15 million), -37%, ¥515 million ($4.6 million), HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina in the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 6 11 (07) ¥14 million ($0.12 million), -56%, ¥1.11 billion ($9.9 million), Cape of Nostalgia (Toei) Week 6 12 (10) ¥14 million ($0.12 million), -48%, ¥600 million ($5.4 million), Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 5 13 (11) ¥13 million ($0.11 million), -49%, ¥330 million ($2.9 million), Oh Brother, Oh Sister! (Toei) Week 4 14 (12) ¥12 million ($0.10 million), -56%, ¥340 million ($3.0 million), The Equalizer (Sony) Week 4 15 (15) ¥11 million ($0.10 million), -50%, ¥4.32 billion ($40.3 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 10 16 (13) ¥10 million ($0.09 million), -57%, ¥420 million ($3.7 million), Hercules (Paramount) Week 4
>As the Gods Will saw a slight increase on Sunday that brings it pretty close to ¥200 million. If it's underestimated slightly and its avg. ticket price is high enough, it could still reach the mark, but it'll be really difficult. Still, this is a solid opening regardless and could be the best opening in 7 weeks if the estimate itself just holds.
>Paper Moon debuts in-line with expectations.
>All the films outside the Top 10, specifically those ranked 11th-14th are really close and could change positions. Black Butler: Book of Murder had enough admissions at the usual locations to make the Top 10 (9th), but since it's a limited release and isn't playing at too many more locations than those reported, I highly doubt it makes the Top 10.
There were also two big concert broadcasts going on over the weekend for PERFUME's 3rd World Tour (NY and UK) and B1A4's World Tour that could have ranked in the Top 15/20, but the limited screens and showings, and ticket prices, makes it too difficult to estimate a weekend gross.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (11/15-16)
In yen and admissions, it's barely trailing the first two films after 3 weeks in release.
The USD total just looks bad because the Yen has hit a 7-year high, or around 2006/2007 levels.
At the same point in time, the Yen is now 39% stronger than in 2010; 48% stronger than 2011; 41% stronger than 2012; and 15% stronger than 2013.
An example to show how much the shift has really been - Stand By Me, Doraemon would be around $105 million now if released in 2010-2012 rather than $79 million. That's over a $25 million difference.
An even bigger one is Frozen. Had it too been released in 2010-2012, it would have grossed $320 million or so in Japan instead of the $249 million it did this year. About a $70 million difference here.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking
Weekend Ranking (11/15-16)
01 (--) As the Gods Will (Toho) DEBUT 02 (--) Paper Moon (Shochiku) DEBUT 03 (01) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 3 04 (03) Clover (Toho) Week 3 05 (02) Twilight Sarasa Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 2 06 (04) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 3 07 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 6 08 (06) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 3 09 (--) Expelled from Paradise (Toei) DEBUT 10 (08) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 15
>As the Gods Will has the best opening in 7 weeks, but still got off to a mediocre start. From director Takashi Miike, the film earned ¥180,281,700 ($1.59 million) with 133,887 admissions on 318 screens. The opening should be enough for it reach ¥1 billion ($9/10 million), but it take most of the remaining year to do it.
>Paper Moon grossed ¥133,625,600 ($1.18 million) with 104,018 admissions on 260 screens. A pretty standard and expected opening here. The film is already showing strength over the weekdays, so legs could turn out well here that ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) could also be doable.
>Expelled from Paradise makes a big splash by making the Top 10. Playing on only 13 screens, it grossed ¥29,194,600 ($256,000) with 17,274 admissions. The opening is impressive all on its own, but what makes it more so is the film is original. It's not uncommon for anime films with strong fanbases to pull in big numbers on very few screens, but I don't remember the last time an original film did this well on so few screens.
The Shinjuku Wald 9 Cinema was noted to have made up most of the weekend's total for Expelled from Paradise, being fully booked on Saturday and most of Sunday.
Granted, its director and screenwriter are behind very popular series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Magi Madoka Magicka, but Expelled from Paradise isn't related to any prior series.
