That's BOM. They're full of errors. They're also two Pokemon movies listed there for the same release date with different totals, and just one was released.

Is it November yet? This October is the worst month I've ever followed, and I thought last weekend was bad. Granted, October is the weakest month of the year, but still... yuck.

If Close Range Love doesn't pull off an amazing hold, and if neither Hercules or The Equalizer see spikes in admissions into the evening, the weekend could end up without a #1 film above ¥100 million. I don't think I've followed the box-office with that happening before, so it's been at least 4/5 years. If it happens, I'll properly look it up to be sure.

Anyway, Hercules and The Equalizer don't look good and hitting ¥100 million (~$1 million) for the weekend isn't likely. Hercules opened yesterday to about ¥25 million ($0.22 million) or so.

The only interesting news is that Stand By Me, Doraemon is likely to earn itself a 12th-consecutive week in the Top 10.

Close Range Love is looking at a possible sub-20% drop, which could keep it above ¥100 million to prevent the weekend going without a film above the mark. Hercules and The Equalizer certainly aren't opening that well after Saturday's numbers.

Weekend Estimates (10/25-26)

01 (01) ¥106 million ($1.0 million), -14%, ¥710 million ($6.6 million), Close Range Love (Toho) Week 3
02 (--) ¥85 million ($0.80 million), 0, ¥110 million ($1.0 million), Hercules (Paramount) NEW
03 (--) ¥80 million ($0.75 million), 0, ¥80 million ($0.75 million), The Equalizer (Sony) NEW

04 (02) ¥61 million ($0.57 million), -36%, ¥690 million ($6.4 million), Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 3
05 (03) ¥59 million ($0.55 million), -27%, ¥4.13 billion ($38.8 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 7
06 (05) ¥58 million ($0.54 million), -16%, ¥340 million ($3.2 million), HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 3
07 (--) ¥55 million ($0.52 million), 0, ¥55 million ($0.52 million), Oh Brother, Oh Sister! (Showgate) NEW
08 (05) ¥49 million ($0.45 million), -39%, ¥275 million ($2.6 million), Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 2
09 (08) ¥40 million ($0.37 million), -20%, ¥8.05 billion ($77.6 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 12
10 (07) ¥37 million ($0.34 million), -34%, ¥800 million ($7.5 million), A Samurai Chronicle (Toho) Week 4
11 (06) ¥32 million ($0.29 million), -43%, ¥130 million ($1.1 million), Disconcerto (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) Week 2
12 (10) ¥16 million ($0.14 million), -29%, ¥2.37 billion ($22.3 million), Lupin III (Toho) Week 9

>Close Range Love manages a 3rd-consecutive week in 1st with an excellent hold, and saves the weekend from having a sub-¥100 million #1 film. I'll do some proper research tomorrow, but I think this might be the first time any film has repeated atop the box-office 3-straight times without ever grossing more than ¥200 million. It's also incredibly likely to reach ¥1 billion (~$10 million) now, so this October won't go without a film achieving the milestone at least... I guess A Samurai Chronicle still has a chance, but it'll be a slow crawl.

>Hercules and The Equalizer are in a very close race for 2nd place. It appears The Equalizer may have ranked 2nd in admissions, but Hercules should have a higher avg. ticket price that may put it above in gross. Since Hercules is playing on around 50% more screens, I'm leaning towards it placing 2nd.

>And all the films ranked 4th-7th are also really close. At the usual locations (about 1/3 of the market), they're 600 admissions apart.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon earning a 12th-consecutive week in the Top 10 looks nearly assured with the estimates unless they're really off somewhere. It'll also be over ¥8 billion now, making it the first non-Ghibli/Disney animated film to ever achieve this major milestone.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking; Charts Updating
Weekend Ranking (10/25-26)

01 (01) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 3
02 (--) Hercules (Paramount) DEBUT
03 (--) The Equalizer (Sony) DEBUT

04 (02) Cape of Nostalgia (Toei) Week 3
05 (05) HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 3
06 (04) Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 2
07 (03) Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 7
08 (--) Oh Brother, Oh Sister! (Showgate) DEBUT
09 (08) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 12
10 (06) A Samurai Chronicle (Toho) Week 4

Thankfully the weekend pulled ahead of estimates and had two films above ¥100 million (though barely), and after doing some research, avoids becoming only the second weekend since at least 2000 to go without a film above ¥100 million. Oct. 4-5, 2009 is the only weekend since 2000 without a film over ¥100 million.

>Close Range Love repeats atop the box-office for a third-consecutive weekend, dropping only 10% to take in ¥111,542,500 ($1.04 million) with 91,413 admissions. And after 3-weeks in release, it has exceeded ¥700 million ($6.5 million+), too. The film is beginning to spawn some pretty great legs, as it was flat on Monday-to-Monday as well. It won't have any problem reaching ¥1 billion (~$10 million), and could perhaps gross ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Hercules was the top debut this weekend in taking second place. Playing very wide on 653 screens (way more than expected), it earned ¥104,267,900 ($975,000) with 71,817 admissions. The film had a high avg. ticket price of ¥1,452 ($13.60) which resulted it in debuting above ¥100 million. It should end up close to ¥500 million ($4.5-5 million).

>The Equalizer debuted in third place with ¥77,928,700 ($730,000) with 60,748 admissions on 183 screens. Given the screen count, this isn't a bad start, but it was dumped by Sony pretty much. Washington's past films have actually performed fairly well, so I don't know why they didn't give this one more of a push.

>Oh Brother, Oh Sister! took eighth place grossing ¥54,884,400 ($515,000) with 40,163 admissions on 157 screens. This isn't too bad for a Showgate release which normally struggle to make the Top 10 (having a weak weekend helps obviously, though).

>Stand By Me, Doraemon continues its huge performance with a 12th-consecutive week in the Top 10, and exceeded ¥8 billion ($78 million) in the process.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Grossing Films (2014)
Here is how the Top 10 from 2014 looks compared to 2013's Top 10 at the same point in time at the end of October:

Top Grossing Films - 2014 (As of Oct. 26th)
Gross ¥ ($) / Admissions [Days in Release] - Film (Distributor)
01. ¥25.46 billion ($249.5 million) / 20.02 million [E] - Frozen (Disney)
02. ¥8.74 billion ($84.9 million) / 7.15 million [F] - The Eternal Zero (Toho)
03. ¥8.06 billion ($77.8 million) / 6.06 million [80] - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho)
04. ¥6.53 billion ($63.6 million) / 4.97 million [E] - Maleficent (Disney)
05. ¥5.21 billion ($49.9 million) / 4.02 million [87] - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.)
06. ¥4.43 billion ($43.5 million) / 3.46 million [F] - Thermae Romae II (Toho)
07. ¥4.25 billion ($41.2 million) / 3.55 million [F] - Lupin III vs. Detective Conan (Toho)
08. ¥4.13 billion ($38.8 million) / 3.24 million [45] - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.)
09. ¥4.09 billion ($40.1 million) / 3.29 million [F] - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho)
10. ¥3.58 billion ($35.1 million) / 3.27 million [F] - Doraemon: Nobita's Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho)

Vs.

Top Grossing Films - 2013 (As of Oct. 27th)
Gross ¥ ($) / Admissions [Days in Release] - Film (Distributor)
01. ¥11.76 billion ($120.7 million) / 9.48 million [100] - The Wind Rises (Toho)
02. ¥8.96 billion ($91.3 million) / 7.05 million [F] - Monsters University (Disney)
03. ¥6.87 billion ($77.1 million) / 5.67 million [F] - One Piece Film Z (Toei)
04. ¥5.89 billion ($65.3 million) / 4.78 million [F] - Les Miserables (Toho-Towa)
05. ¥4.23 billion ($46.3 million) / 3.09 million [F] - Ted (Toho-Towa)
06. ¥3.98 billion ($43.2 million) / 3.66 million [F] - Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gagdet Museum (Toho)
07. ¥3.61 billion ($36.9 million) / 3.01 million [E] - Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea (Toho)
08. ¥3.26 billion ($33.9 million) / 2.67 million [E] - Midsummer Formula (Toho)
09. ¥3.24 billion ($33.7 million) / 2.77 million [E] - The After-Dinner Mysteries (Toho)
10. ¥3.08 billion ($32.0 million) / 2.96 million [E] - Pokemon BW: ExtremeSpeed Genesect - Mewtwo Awakens (Toho)

If 2014 can get one more film above ¥4 billion, it'll be the first year with a Top 10 consisting of all ¥4 billion hits since 2010 (and 2007 before that).

December releases are counted towards the following year, so Big Hero 6 and the Yokai Watch movie (which reportedly already exceeded 500,000 advance tickets) are ruled out.

That pretty much leaves it up to Parasyte Part 1 (dir. Takashi Yamazaki already has 2 films in 2014's Top 10 (Top 3 even) - The Eternal Zero and Stand By Me, Doraemon), so it's certainly possible, and then maybe Interestellar if it explodes in the States and elsewhere first, but the lukewarm reviews will probably keep it in check. We'll see.

10 (06) ¥41 million ($0.37 million), -28%, ¥4.21 billion ($39.5 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 8

Now with November here, we finally have an interesting weekend. Sure, there's no big film opening, but all four openers should do well.

Also, a couple notes regarding this weekend:

1) The Yen just hit a 7-year low vs the Dollar going into the weekend, so USD figures may not look particularly impressive.
2) Saturday is the 1st of the Month, so tickets are 40% off at all major chains. This will drive ticket sales, but grosses sometimes suffer unless the film gets a significant boost in admissions.

And I'm wanting to predict an upset this weekend.... Beauty and the Beast (the France/Germany live-action adaptation which has earned over $30 million WW so far) has some great ticket sales this morning and isn't trailing too far behind the leaders, especially when you compare their theater counts, but the theater count is what will make this upset unlikely to happen. Beauty and the Beast is only playing in 153 theaters, which is only half as many as Clover and The Expendables 3.

So Mid-Day Report:

At the usual locations (1/3 of the market), it's beating Clover 16,446 to 16,292 admissions, with The Expendables 3 close behind with 15,909. Dracula ZERO is fourth with 9,662.

Top 10 (As of 02:30PM)
16,446 - Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) NEW

Hercules should pick up in the evening. Should.

Saturday Admissions [Usual Locations - 1/3 of Market]

41,371 - Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) NEW
33,641 - Clover (Toho) NEW
33,546 - The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) NEW
19,746 - Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) NEW

14,264 - Close Range Love (Toho) Week 4
12,477 - Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 3
11,541 - Oh Brother, Oh Sister! (Showgate) Week 2
11,130 - The Equalizer (Sony) Week 2
7,936 - Hercules (Paramount) Week 2
6,870 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) Week 8
6,699 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 13
6,054 - Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 4
5,688 - HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 4
5,108 - A Samurai Chronicle (Toho) Week 5

>Quite impressive for Beauty and the Beast. It played much better in the evening/night than I would have predicted. Since a lot of its theaters are in the usual locations, it's more difficult to estimate what its opening day may have been. However, it looks strong enough here to perhaps have hit 100,000 admissions and/or a ¥100 million (~$1 million) opening day at just 153 theaters.

The Saturday victory here doesn't necessarily means it will go on to top the weekend, though. Clover and The Expendables 3 are playing much wider and have more locations unaccounted for. Sunday will need to remain strong and well ahead of the competition for it to debut in 1st place still.

I'd say the Top 3 are all aiming for debuts between ¥150-200 million ($1.5-2.0 million).

>Dracula ZERO is doing alright and still looks on track for a debut around ¥100 million (~$1 million).

>And that's massive for Stand By Me, Doraemon. It's up almost 110% in admissions over last Saturday due to the 1st of the Month, and since it plays really well on Sunday... I wouldn't rule out a 13th-consecutive weekend in the Top 10.

Is that good for The Expendables 3?

How much is the average cinema ticket?
