The marketing is walking a very fine tightrope of teasing/increasing anticipation and spoiling extremely little.

Yeah no trailers for me at the Air & Space in Chantilly any time I've been there. As of now they've got showtimes listed for afternoon matinees, which I've never seen before. Typically they only play feature films after 4PM, this is the first time I've seen 12/1/2/3PM shows.

The praise is starting to pour in thick ahead of reviews. Will soon be buying my tickets for second and third 70mm IMAX viewings.

Gravity who?

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/inter ... 201336399/

Quote:
Fandango reports that pre-sales for the picture are outpacing “Inception” at a similar point in its sales cycle and last summer’s sci-fi hit “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which debuted to $62.8 million and $72.6 million, respectively. It has been one of the online ticketer’s top performers since going on sale on Oct. 1, and often appears among the top five most popular movies. MovieTickets.com says it has seen similar results.

Some Imax theaters have added 3 and 3:30 a.m. screenings following Tuesday midnight shows, as well as 8 a.m. showtimes on Wednesday to keep up with the demand.

Showing “Interstellar” in 70 mm has required a financial commitment on the part of theater owners. Brian Schultz, CEO of Studio Movie Grill, is paying $35,000 a screen for the projectors. However, Nolan has gone out of his way to express his gratitude to exhibitors who made the investment, even calling Schultz personally to thank him.

Truth. It was actually two screenings, one in LA, and one in NY. The LA screening happened at the renovated Chinese Theater. Both were press screenings. On Nolan's insistence, they installed a 70mm IMAX projector at the Chinese Theater just for Interstellar.

Both screenings are heavily embargoed until Monday, but twitter reactions are still coming in hot, and the praise is glowing as expected.

This is going to set a new standard for legs for a major Nolan film .

Compared to other large openers, sure, but those are almost entirely different types of films. It would have been around if not under 4 if released during the slow seasons like most thrillers. They almost all are over 3. Gone Girl could be better and Gravity certainly was. Taken represents great legs of the genre. Inception's holds were good, but not extraordinary.

Tuesday 8pm early screenings on IMAX 70mm, regular 70mm, and 35mm film .

Think of it kind of like early midnights, as that's essentially what they'll be. Or for those that don't have a Tuesday night early screening in their area (lacking a film projector screening in their area), there are also the Thursday night screenings in digital theaters and digital IMAX.

God damn I'm excited, can't wait for that Tuesday early viewing! Just have to figure out for what days I'm going to buy my IMAX 70mm tickets for 2nd and 3rd viewings.

Twitter reactions are red hot about this being a can't-miss-must-see event in 70mm IMAX. Then again, for me, so was The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Non-spoiler twitter reactions/micro reviews are all over the place right now. Full reviews coming soon. Nolan is just being Nolan, trying to preserve that element of surprise for when people see the film.

I am seeing the film on Monday and I have to sign an embargo that will last for ONE HOUR after my screening is over. That's ridiculous.

Still, it's a heck of a lot better than being embargoed for weeks for instance.

Eh it happens. I have seen a certain film three weeks ago and it is embargoed until November 21st or so.

A. Saying Inception is just a "thriller" is a broad simplification. It's a sci-fi action thriller blockbuster and you just picked one element of it.

B. You have zero basis to say it would of had a sub-4.0 multiplier in a different release

C. If you're going to go with your "thriller" definition, then you have to take into account that Inception opened to 62.7m, which is significantly bigger than almost all thrillers. It's basic BO logic to understand that bigger openings in this day an age just tend to lead to lesser legs due to frontloading effect.

A. If the Sci-Fi element alone frontloaded, why would Gravity have had such great legs? The new ST films acted more like adult films aimed at a wide audience too (plus STID was clearly not like other scifi based on the Thursday gross). Inception's trailer had a few explosions, but no fight scenes. It is the action movies with lots of fight scenes that tend to be really frontloaded (Transformers, Matrix). Jack Ryan was an action thriller, but it was predictable that it would not have a comic book multiplier.

B. Its weekdays the first week were 60% of the weekend. With schools in it would have been 40% or lower. So, that would drag down the multiplier at least 12% with the same weekend drops (Probably 12-18%). You could argue that holds are weaker in summer, but summer films are they type to be frontloaded anyway.

C. There is no logic that big openings lead to big drops. The types of movies to open big are mostly the type that are frontloaded whatever their openings. Plus, when has this idea ever been useful? Someone predicted Transcendence could hold better because it had a small opening. Small openers have big drops all the time if they fit the profile. If anything there is evidence that big openings lead to better legs because of sellouts OW.
