 Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Dawn of the Dead Quote: Dawn of the Dead is a 2004 horror remake of George A. Romero's 1978 film of the same name. The remake and original both depict a handful of human survivors living in a shopping mall surrounded by swarms of zombies, but the details differ significantly. The directorial debut of Zack Snyder, the film was produced by Strike Entertainment in association with New Amsterdam Entertainment, released by Universal Pictures and stars Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, and Jake Weber with cameos from original cast members Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger and Tom Savini.

It's definitely my favorite zombie movie, I just love the gore, the scares, and the zombies, WOW! The Unrated Director's Cut really polishes up the story and fills in some plot holes that were in the original theatrical release, making the movie and it's story all that much better. I really love this movie.

Glad you liked it, publicenemy. It's really an awesome zombie movie. Probably one of the best if not the best. I'm very impressed with the horror remakes lately. One of my favorite movies this year.

One of the best zombie movies of recent memory, and lives up George A. Romero's original Dawn of the Dead. Well worth seeing. A-

While it doesn't have the subtext of the original Dawn, this has to be one of the most exciting, balls-to-the-walls zombie movies out there. Absolutely great fun, and surprisingly well made as well. A-

I don't think it is quite as splendid as oh so many make it out to be, but it is a fun remake. It is certainly more daring than many films of the genre, especially in its ending and it makes no compromises. The acting is decent, just as you'd expect in a movie like this one. I loved the visceral and raw style the movie was shot in, but I never thought it was scary at all. I didn't ever even feel the flightest hint of suspense and I think that the middle part dragged a little. It certainly picks up in the final 15-20 minutes.

Of all the horror remakes, I thought this one was the best so far. It actually added to the original, rather than cashing in on lack of ideas. I give it an A and also recommend Shuan of the Dead, great little parody of zombie films.

One of the better remakes in recent memory. Not all of the symbolism and messages are there from the first film, but this version probably would've been hindered by it. The ending was also very nicely done.

Quite entertaining, very well-made, and just plain cool. Though much more action than horror, and perhaps containing too much zombie killing and not enough social commentary, but this is mere nitpicking. The beginning is simply brilliant, from the opening attack scene to the driving scene, which is so well shot and just chilling in its depiction of the apocalypse. Not to mention the wicked credits, incorporating a Johnny Cash song into some memorable stock footage. The first 90 minutes or so of the film contains little action, but it serves the film well, as it would feel overdone. Case in point, the last twenty minutes are chocked full of such non-stop thrills that it's in dire need of a breath, but never gets one. The ending is just perfect, though, as it's just as uncompromising as the rest of the film. The acting is about as good as one can expect, and the direction is just awesome. All in all, a solid remake and an exhilirating film.

Re: Dawn of the Dead (2004)
It has everything going against it:
-Dialogue on the verge of incomprehensible. Typical horror lines.
-One-dimensional characters that only serve singular purposes. All the horror movie staples are here. The cute blonde. The asshole. The unlikely hero. The tough black guy.
-It's loud, it's dumb, it's illogical.
But it's still one of my favorite movies. Definitely an excellent remake of an already superb film. Almost impossible that they could pull off remaking one of the most beloved zombie movies of all time. It's a buffet of horror movie cliches. It's self-aware so it doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's never a light-hearted romp. It could have veered too far in one direction and ruined everything, but it always stays firmly on the rails.
Not to mention possibly the best opening/closing credits combo of any movie (opening set to Johnny Cash; closing over the end credits which basically takes away any hope that they survive).

I wrote a lengthy review on BOM but even if the forum survived, I probably deleted it. Oops.
Figured it would be fun to write about it ten years later.
