 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Not quite bud. Adjusted for inflation:
Titanic $1,100 million Avatar $792 million Jurassic Park $749 million
$350 million is less than half of any of these. Even if we didn't adjust for inflation, Titanic's $600million, Avatar's $750million, and JP's $360million (in 1993) are much much higher than $350-$400million.
But yes, I and many others are predicting a big, big break out for an original film. It's hardly unprecedented: Frozen opened only one year ago. And Nolan's last original film flirted with $300million four years ago.
Plus this movie's gonna make steely truck drivers cry like pregnant mothers. 3% of the audience is going to spontaneously pass away from sheer awe (which will actually lead to good press).

Better than the first two, but still meh. Looks like a Spielberg film.

True. But it's not anymore and hasn't been a Spielberg project for years.

I am amazed by how many folks have seen this already. non-franchise film with very no real money shot in marketing. it needs early buzz to generate to make it a big event. Paramount/WB were stupid for not getting this ready a few months earlier for summer. This was the kind of film people were craving for this summer. I agree it would have done great in summer. But its gonna break out in winter and I believe sets itself for better push with Academy than with summer release.

Advertising it with a little Spielberg effect isn't a bad thing, imo.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Well, if it were a little Spielberg and a lot of Nolan, maybe I'd agree. But it's a little bit Spielberg and a lot of 'meh', which makes the Spielberg stand out even more. Spielberg and Nolan do not market themselves the same way. The former is safe and boring (at least nowadays he is) and Nolan is grandiose, clean and modern. So in this case, the little bit of Spielberg isn't doing Interstellar any favours, especially not with the crowd that weren't already sold on the project as soon as the movie was announced.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
The poster with MM standing in his space suit in front of the ice world is almost exactly like the Inception poster with Leo standing in front of the skyscrapers.
This poster is slightly Spielberg. But it still screams Nolan. Sorry if you disagree, but you're wrong.

Well, nobody is wrong in matters such as these. You'll know that when you learn anything about marketing.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Right now I'm thinking 55 open/ 185 close. I feel like Gravity had the better advantage and better "Must See" quality, and almost 6 weeks to itself before something big opened.
Question. I do think this has potential to hit 70+ for the weekend, but what about Big Hero 6? Could Day After Tomorrow finally go down?

I see no reason for this to open to less than Inception. And Big Hero 6 will finally knock down Teh Day After Tomorrow, IMO.

Ok, so now it's getting better. Although it still looks very techy-geeky, like Apollo 13 meets Sphere.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
Meh. Looks like Star Trek (2009). There's certainly a lack of creativity so far in this marketing campaign, which will, whether you like it or not, reflect badly on the film.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
What does it have in common with Star Trek 2009? That there's a spaceship?

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
I didn't say it was identical. But it does have a spaceship, yes. Plus it appears to be in some sort of hyper drive. That's where the Star Trek (2009) connections end, but not where the lack of creativity ends, as it has an uninspiring palette of colours in the background and a generic "GO FURTHER" tagline (which is none too different than "the future begins").
So far, I'm unimpressed.

 Re: Interstellar Domestic Predictions
I just found out that apparently the poster of them standing in the sea is the final poster for this campaign. If that's going to be it, then I can already call this a lame campaign. Apart from International variations, this film has no hope in terms of print marketing (as I must say, its trailers are magnificent).

He wants people to see this in its proper format. Also, a Wednesday probably isn't a bad idea given that the film isn't going to be getting any kind of OW record. Let WOM build up. thought that trend died years ago.
