As far as imported animated films go, the first How to Train Your Dragon is the best reviewed film after Toy Story 3 on every major review site, so there's a lot of passionate fans here.

If not for this, I would find it hard to believe a high-profile film like Dragon 2 with a built-in audience could not get a proper release. Doesn't Fox have the distribution right to the film in Japan?

Weekend Estimates (09/13-14)
01 (--) ¥1.13 billion ($10.9 million), 0, ¥1.13 billion ($10.9 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) NEW
02 (01) ¥268 million ($2.5 million), -28%, ¥6.85 billion ($66.9 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 6
03 (--) ¥235 million ($2.2 million), 0, ¥235 million ($2.2 million), Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) NEW
04 (02) ¥192 million ($1.8 million), -32%, ¥1.55 billion ($14.7 million), Lupin III (Toho) Week 3
05 (--) ¥140 million ($1.2 million), 0, ¥140 million ($1.2 million), Lady Maiko (Toho) NEW
06 (03) ¥94 million ($0.90 million), -42%, ¥4.86 billion ($47.1 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 7
07 (04) ¥85 million ($0.82 million), -34%, ¥2.14 billion ($20.5 million), Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 5
08 (06) ¥75 million ($0.71 million), -35%, ¥785 million ($7.5 million), Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 3
09 (05) ¥62 million ($0.58 million), -49%, ¥290 million ($2.7 million), Non-Stop (Gaga) Week 2
10 (08) ¥26 million ($0.23 million), -45%, ¥105 million ($1.0 million), In the Hero (Toei) Week 2

>If estimates are accurate, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends delivers the biggest opening in two years, and the best opening for a live-action film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 in 2011. It's also just the 5th live-action domestic film to have debuted above ¥1 billion mark (and the first for a Warner Bros. release). Also, It also effectively doubled the opening weekend of the last Rurouni Kenshin film (still in the Top 10).

Unless it turns out to be really frontloaded, which it shouldn't, it'll exceed ¥5 billion ($50 million) and possibly ¥6 billion ($60 million) as well. A ¥6 billion total would bring the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy up to ¥14 billion+ (~$150 million+) for Warner Bros., or over 3-3.5x what The Hobbit trilogy will end up grossing in total.

>Guardians of the Galaxy did pretty well for itself, besting the opening weekends of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World without much trouble. Rocket Raccoon was the face of marketing for the film in Japan (everyone was just calling it the 'Raccoon' film), so that definitely helped this one avoid a disappointing return. Hopefully it isn't too frontloaded, though, and can manage ¥1 billion ($9/10 million). Superhero films are generally pretty frontloaded, though, so it won't be easy.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon edges closer to ¥7 billion (almost $70 million), and should hit the milestone tomorrow (Monday is a holiday). When it does, it'll join only the first Pokemon movie as the sole non-Ghibli/Disney animated movie to ever reach the mark.

>10th place is pretty open for either In the Hero, Memories of Marnie, or the debut of Cardfight! Vanguard.

Fox is listed as the distributor, but it may not be updated. It's unfortunately not too hard to believe it not being released. A lot of Dreamworks Animation films, and other studios like Blue Sky or Sony, don't see theatrical releases anymore due to poor box-office results (they barely make the Weekend Top 10 if that).

It's a trilogy, I think.

Yeah, estimates were "off". Well, more like weekend business at Toho Cinemas this past Sunday (discount day there) really messed with the projection.

It actually came in a little higher than WB's estimate, though, and easily earned the biggest debut of the year, and the biggest 3-day total since One Piece Film Z in 2012, and since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 for a live-action film.

Weekend results will be posted soon.

Weekend Ranking (09/13-14)

Image

01 (--) Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 6
03 (--) Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) DEBUT
04 (02) Lupin III (Toho) Week 3
05 (--) Lady Maiko (Toho) DEBUT
06 (04) Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 5
07 (03) Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (Warner Bros.) Week 7
08 (06) Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 3
09 (05) Non-Stop (Gaga) Week 2
10 (09) Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 9

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, the final chapter in the trilogy, earned the biggest debut of the year, taking in a huge ¥919,479,200 ($8.7 million) on 717,948 admissions on 435 screens. After 3-days in release, its total rose to an incredible ¥1,308,400,500 ($12.5 million) on 1,034,988 admissions.

A few facts about this opening:

>Biggest Opening Weekend of the Year.
>2nd Biggest Opening Weekend in September (behind Umizaru: The Last Message), although it's 1st in Admissions.
>Highest 3-Day total since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011, and only the second film since then to break ¥1 billion and 1 million admissions (The Wind Rises being the other) in 3-days.
>Only the 5th Domestic Live-Action to break 700,000 Admissions in 2-days, and only the 3rd to break 1 million Admissions in 3-days.

This is also a 130% increase over the opening of the first Rurouni Kenshin film in 2012, and a 55% increase over the debut of the second film just last month. The franchise has grown considerably with each installment.

Even if it has poor legs, and nothing hints at this happening at all (great reviews, conclusion film, headline debut, etc.), it'll exceed ¥5 billion ($50 million) and should be able to reach ¥6 billion ($60 million) or a bit higher.

>Guardians of the Galaxy had to settle for 3rd place behind Stand By Me, Doraemon, but still had a pretty nice opening. Playing on 595 screens, the film took in ¥224,145,400 ($2.1 million) on 176,233 admissions. This film could have easily bombed, but thanks to a clever campaign to reduce ticket prices on opening weekend, and to almost exclusively market Rocket Raccoon, it'll do reasonably well for its genre. After 3-days in release, its total rose to ¥331,170,000 ($3.1 million).

>Lady Maiko rounds out the Top 5, debuting with ¥110,158,500 ($1.0 million) on 91,772 admissions on 300 screens. While a mediocre opening, its within expectations with most of its business coming from weekdays (Ladies Day on Wednesdays) instead of over the weekend frames.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating
On paper, 2014 looked like it'd be a weak year, but it has kinda exploded honestly (even if you exclude Frozen from the equation).

>13 films above ¥3 billion already for the year (maybe 14 if Transformers can crawl there).
>8 films above ¥4 billion.
>4 films above ¥5 billion (and both Rurouni Kenshin films will make it, so soon to be 6!).
>1 film above ¥10 billion (way, way above).

All of these stats already beat last year. This is really, really strong, too, since there should be a couple more films left in the year to exceed ¥3 billion.

It looks like 2014 could end up being the strongest year since 2010 (which happened to be the biggest year ever) if Fall/Winter films perform well. And legs this year have been quite spectacular as well.

No opening weekend data for The Matrix. It knocked Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace out of 1st after 9-consecutive weeks, so I'm guessing The Matrix opened with ¥500/600 million.

So did Disney's strategy of lowering tickets to 500 Yen and releasing Guardians in every single cinema pay off? It opened to $2m, which looks awful on face value, but then this is Japan where legs carry films more than any other market, so what are its prospects?

It opened higher than expected due to the campaign, I'm sure. It beat the opening of established films like Captain America or Thor, which also had the Avengers boost (though it's really small in Japan compared to most other markets), and wasn't too far off of X-Men either.

And always keep in mind, that outside of Spider-Man, superhero films are unpopular in Japan, usually being the equivalent of $50-75 million earners in the US in Japan.

The drop is alarming, but after an abnormal large opening weekend over a 3-dau holiday weekend, perhaps it's not too unexpected. After 9-days in release, the film has exceeded ¥2.2 billion ($20 million) and 1.76 million admissions, tracking 15% ahead of the last film right now.

>Dawn of the Planet of the Apes... almost bombed honestly. It only earned ¥210,925,300 ($2.0 million) on 149,354 screens on 712 screens. This is down almost 50% from the opening weekend of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Dawn had previews last weekend which deflated the opening weekend, but this is still a huge drop. It'll probably earn only make ¥1.5 billion ($14 million) or a little more.

>Revenge of the Pomegranate Tree Hill had an okay debut, grossing ¥100,389,900 ($0.94 million) on 86,646 admissions on 255 screens. It actually ranked 4th for the weekend in admissions, but its low avg. ticket price brings it down to 6th in gross.
