Vanguard: Neon Messiah (Shochiku) NEWThis should be a very nice 3-day weekend. > Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends has very strong presales, and as I mentioned this past week, has potential to deliver the biggest opening weekend of the year (biggest 3-day total is quite likely). For now, I'm predicting it'll fall a bit short of the top debut of the year since Monday should take some weekend business, but I hope I'm just being conservative. There hasn't been a film open above ¥1 billion in 3 days since The Wind Rises last year, and to find a live-action film, we have to go way back to 2012's Bayside Shakedown: The Final, so hopefully Rurouni Kenshin does it this weekend. This franchise has become so huge for Warner Bros. Just one of these sequels will outgross the entire The Hobbit trilogy. > Guardians of the Galaxy is looking decent, but it's hard to predict this one with its ticket prices being so low this weekend. 3D showings are looking good, though, and they're excluded from the ticket discount. I'm just basing my prediction of its presales compared to other films, but it's honestly hard to say where it'll end up over the long weekend.

Good one. It's being released in November though, a popular month that often sees several films skew towards an elderly audience, so it may not be a coincidence. Respect for the Aged Day continues to have more relevance every year in Japan. The country now sees 25% of its population being over the age of 65; 12% are over 75; and 2% are over 90. The centenarian population is greatly increasing, too, with almost 60,000 people over 100 now.

There's been an online petition making the rounds, with the purpose of releasing How to Train Your Dragon 2 in Japan cinemas. The group has gathered over 5,000 signatures with a goal of over 10,000, and recently, Dean DeBlois himself (director of the film) signed the petition and had this to say: As far as imported animated films go, the first How to Train Your Dragon is the best reviewed film after Toy Story 3 on every major review site, so there's a lot of passionate fans here.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin; Guardi
5,000 signatures isn't enough to get a distributor to import it. That would be a bomb if only 5,000 people attended. Even 10,000. The petition would need millions for it to be worthwhile as most of the signatures are probably not from Japanese fans.

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin; Guardi
Mid-Day Report, 02:30PM (09/13) Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Admissions
50,428 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) NEW 12,621 - Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) NEW 12,517 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 6 7,615 - Lady Maiko (Toho) NEW 7,356 - Lupin III (Toho) Week 3 4,198 - Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 5 3,601 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (PREVIEWS) 3,465 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 7 3,290 - Cardfight! Vanguard: Neon Messiah (Shochiku) NEW 2,746 - Non-Stop (Gaga) Week 2
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends is tracking ahead of every film so far this year at the mid-day point (02:30PM) except for Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (which is the year's biggest opener).
It's tracking: *104% ahead of Transformers: Age of Extinction *61% ahead of Godzilla *48% ahead of Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc *12% ahead of Maleficent *3% ahead of Stand By Me, Doraemon *1% ahead of Frozen *7% behind Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension
>Guardians of the Galaxy is having the admissions so far of a ~¥250 million (~$2.5 million) opener, but its unique ticket price situation makes it hard to project.
And nice to see the previews for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes here for now. Overall though, previews are a bit pointless in Japan anymore. They aren't included in opening weekends, and more often than not, they weaken the opening weekend, too. I can't recall any recent film where previews have had any noticeable, positive, impact.

Corpse, I was wondering about when you post weekend reports or yearly/franchise gross lists, how many forums do you post the exact same information/data on? and are there many time-consuming formatting alterations you need to make or is it a simple copy/paste?

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin; Guardi
I post some updates on a Japanese board, but they already know all this stuff. And I also post on the boxoffice.com forums, too, but I honestly don't like doing so. Simply copy/pasting updates from here to there doesn't go too well because their board is different. They don't support the highlight tabs I enjoy utilizing, so I always have to edit those, and the size tabs often come out much different which is annoying and time-consuming to edit. I try to limit updates there to just the main updates (weekend forecasts/ranking, yearly updates). Copy/paste for the yearly or top grossing type updates. I have these lists saved on my computer or drafts on here.

Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Opening Weekends This Decade
If Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends follows the same pattern as the first film earlier this year, here is where it could, theoretically, open:
Biggest Opening Weekends This Decade (2010-)
Weekend Gross ¥($) / Admissions - Film (Dis.) I think it'll open closer to ¥900 million than over ¥1 billion, but its opening day already put it over half way there with ~¥500-525 million ($4.9-5.1 million) and 350-375,000 admissions based on estimates.

I didn't realise The Matrix Reloaded opening so big in Japan. I suppose like most places, it couldn't sustain it. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is also a surprise.

Re: Japan Box Office: (Rurouni Kenshin Lands Biggest OD of 2
The Matrix and Terminator were huge properties that suffered unfortunate fates.
Reloaded wasn't too well received (still grossed ¥11 billion, though, #19 All-Time), and Revolutions fell apart after its huge opening and probably killed the franchise. I think think there may be an audience for it to continue, though... maybe.
And Salvation pretty much killed the Terminator franchise. It opened very high (with previews and extra days, it managed to exceed ¥1 billion slightly), but its legs were absolutely terrible and it finished with just 1/3 of Terminator 3's total. Terminator 3 may have been disliked by the US and most other markets, but it barely dropped from Terminator 2 in Japan (without checking, I think it dropped under 5% in total).

Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin; Guardi
Mid-Day Report, 02:30PM (09/14) Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Admissions
72,342 (+43%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) NEW 29,615 (+137%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 6 20,665 (+64%) - Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney) NEW 17,028 (+131%) - Lupin III (Toho) Week 3 13,791 (+81%) - Lady Maiko (Toho) NEW 8,667 (+150%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 7 8,202 (+128%) - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (PREVIEWS) 7,894 (+88%) - Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 5 5,919 (+115%) - Non-Stop (Gaga) Week 2 5,806 (+118%) - Lucy (Toho-Towa) Week 3
These increases are crazy. It is Toho day (40% off tickets today at their locations), but they're still crazy. I haven't seen a film above 70,000 already for the day. That's major opening day level of admissions already for Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends.
I'm guessing Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends is well over 600,000 admissions for the weekend so far, maybe near 700,000, and could push towards 800,000 perhaps? That sounds ridiculous to me as you can see on the All Time Opening Weekend Charts above, that 800,000 (even 700,000) is very hard to achieve (26 times to my knowledge).

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (09/13-14) 293,905 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (NEW) 73,328 - Guardians of the Galaxy (NEW) 68,701 (-25%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Week 6) 54,470 (-28%) - Lupin III (Week 3) 38,171 - Lady Maiko (NEW) 32,162 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (PREVIEWS) 23,555 (-35%) - Lucy (Week 3) 22,301 (-32%) - Hot Road (Week 5) 22,958 (-39%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 7) 19,298 (-47%) - Non-Stop (Week 2) 8,356 (-42%) - In the Hero (Week 2)
>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends has the highest admissions total at Toho Cinemas at all the other chains since The Wind Rises, and it probably beat The Wind Rises, too, since Warner Bros. films play stronger at Aeon Cinemas.
The chances that it opened above ¥1 billion ($10 million+) and 800,000 admissions are very high, which will make it the first film to do so since 2012's One Piece Film Z, and the first live-action film to do it since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 in 2011.
>Guardians of the Galaxy probably missed reaching ¥250 million ($2.3/2.4 million), but it looks to have comfortably exceeded the ¥200 million mark with maybe ¥220/230 million ($2.1/2.2 million). This isn't a great start, but hey, it's not that bad and probably a lot higher than before they began marketing Rocket Raccoon all over the place.
Weekend Estimates will be up shortly.
