Whether it be Radio, News, VO, or any kind of public speaking, you're not suppose to speak like if you were having a normal conversation with someone. It's one of the more important things when interviewing with a news/ radio station in a higher market.
I've heard stories where executives and those in advertising will hire out sample groups to watch candidate tapes. First without being able to see them, then being able to see who goes with the voice.

And I didn't realize my recording had so much noise (I'm always listening to something).

Algren seems to have a deep intimidating voice from my impression.

I think that's how most of the world see English/British people, but they forget to realise that Mancs, Geordies, Cockneys and Liverpudlians are also British, and they sound terrible. It is true though that if you sound upper-class (regal, as you put it) you're more likely to get success or notoriety in your profession. The everyday man-on-the-street just sounds normal and not posh at all.
