The reason why Scorcese/QT are masters of movie soundtracks is not because they put good songs but because they use songs to elevate (though never truly dominate) the scene.
Look at the use of music in Wolf of Wall Street and compare it to something like Guardians. There's a significant difference IMO. Most people can just slap on a good song to a scene; very few can pick the right song that makes a scene better. Shouldn't the perspective be that you utilize the song to make the scene better which Guardians does much better than WoWS? You can see that RedBones song got many hits because of Quill lipsynching to it. Ditto for the movie's use of the Jackson 5 song and Pina Colada. It reminds me how Wayne's World made Bohemian Rapsody and how Risky Business made the Bob Segar song popular again.

 Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
A sign of music making a scene better is... you can remember which song goes to which scene.
And I don't remember which song goes to which scene in this. They just threw in older songs to make it hipster.

The songs are great songs. The movie helped people remember that (or help people discover it). But I think about half of the time it was just sort of pointless. It was just having the song for the sake of having the song without any real thought into why the song was being played. You mean like throwing Everlong in a scene that was supposed to take place in around 1993.

 Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
I agree with Magnus on this one. Guardians has some nice songs, but they don't exactly make great scenes. Still the overall use is nice.

Thinking back... you're correct. What self respecting villain wouldn't have vaporized him right then and there? Marvel villains, that's who.

Wolf's song selections are mostly scoring the movie, while Guardians' songs are both scoring the movie but also existing inside the story, as the kind of songs that an 8-year-old kid from the '80s would enjoy after being introduced to them by his mom. I think that makes the selections perfectly fine.

I thought the music choices were good (the only really memorable one is the title screen) but the scene with Cherry Bomb kinda felt out of place.

Eh, that's still a better ratio than most movies with a largely pop music soundtrack. Complaining that it wasn't QT/Scorsese worthy is like complaining that a comedy was Airplane!-level funny. I just think it's a silly thing to get nitpicky about, especially since again, the song selections have different goals.

 Re: Guardians of the Galaxy
The point of the music selection was to be out of place though, signifying Quill's place in the universe. I loved the use of "Cherry Bomb" . And the other characters reactions to the songs almost always provide a laugh. I'm not about to dig into QT and Marty, but turning into a movie into a music video is lazy, and did you ever think that their songs work better in movies because ... they are better songs?

Agreed - thought the music choices overall were great and memorable. 3000% better than what would have normally been a generic Marvel score.

This and Winter Soldier are the first two Marvel films that just flat out work on all levels. They still don't amount to much, but hey they're getting better.

The dance-off bit was definitely the best part of the finale. I went from being half-bored by what was going on to ridiculously entertained.

"Dance" in any sort of blockbuster always generates a certain amount of dislike from some it seems.

Still unsure what to choose for most embarrassing, Depp's Alice in Wonderland dancing or Quill's Guardians of the Galaxy one
