He also said recently it will be "documentary style." So not sure yet if that's a good thing or not.

Having a family friendly tone is good for it but not the documentary style action.

Tyler wrote: Algren wrote: Tyler wrote: Yeah, we all know what a tough sell Nolan is financially. Cute sarcasm. But outside of Batman movies, which really are not sold on his name at all, he's had one big hit (which was largely because of his fame from the Batman movies, and because it starred Leonardo DiCaprio). This Interstellar is a test, no matter how much you guys think it is not. haha what? Memento was a very successful independent film that's had a long shelf-life on video, as has The Prestige, and this was before he became a big name. The idea that Nolan's stuff isn't accessible and name-tested at this rank is bunk. OK. 1. You're a moron if you think that Memento or The Prestige are in the same league as Inception and the Batman films. 2. Look at the thread title...it says "$300m", which means that any comment inside is referring to that level of interest. Sure, Nolan can rattle off $60m grossers on his name alone, but Interstellar is a test to see if he can make a $300m grosser on his name alone.

 Re: Interstellar 300m+ Club
Just throwing it out there, is a $300 m + club that difficult nowadays? 4 out of his last 5 films will adjust to $265 m + anyhow.
We'll also have about 9 $255 m + films in the last 14 months so maybe ramp this to $350 m +?

$300m is far from guarantee for this one. Its different tonally and not completely different or intense like Inception IMO.

Significantly inferior as a whole to any film Nolan has actually directed, along with the rest of Snyder's filmography. Also, 85M total is ludicrous given what this film has going for it. There's a chance it might miss that amount Opening Weekend, but its entire domestic run will blow past it at least 3 times.

 Re: Interstellar 300m+ Club
I think the film should open bigger than Inception if the marketing gets as good. The holidays will help it to have as good of legs, even if it is not as well received. It really needs a good opening. It would have been good to move the film back a week to get that strong hold in its third, instead of its fourth weekend.

I don't see this opening more than Inception unless we get another trailer soon that's really good.

early tracking courtesy BO.com forums. Raw numbers are interesting more than the projection. it will play 4-Quad for sure.

It is definitely going to do big numbers but I am still not sure of $80m but those VERY EARLY tracking numbers are really promising for it.

It atleast has a good chance of matching Inceptions total.

With the new trailer online, I'd say this club is a given

New trailer is awesome, but I still think this will be a movie with really good legs rather than a BIG opening. Not going to join this club just yet though.

 Re: Interstellar 300m+ Club
The new trailer is great, but it's still not going to out-gross a George Clooney/Sandra Bullock blockbuster.
MM is popular, a bit, but no where near the level of GC and SB. Plus, it's a space exploration film, which just spells "limited appeal" to me. I'd be surprised if it grossed more than $150m.

 Re: Interstellar 300m+ Club
Instead of bumping a Gravity thread, have got to say, what a wonderful run. Completely forgot it made $275m thought it was around $220m.
Phenomenal. Great that a great movie did so well. (I went to look it up after seeing SPR again and realizing it won the year and made $200m+ from a $30m OW.)
Wish Dragon 2 could've got those legs but, CGI, so adults will stay away.

 Re: Interstellar 300m+ Club
Gravity's run was indeed brilliant. 2nd highest grossing October gross adjusted (just behind Look Who's Talking (!))
1998 was also interesting in that after Titanic dominated the first half of the year (half a billion in calendar year 98), the top 3 films of the year all came from July (SPR, Armageddon and TSAM). All three were leggy films too.
Don't think there is any other year where the Top 3 of the year all came from the same month?
