Re: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Intl) I think the film is having a similar problem OS as domestically, just to a smaller degree. Namely, it's probably just a bit too serious for kids to want to see it again and again. I don't just mean "too dark" or "too scary", I mean too serious in general. It seems like the animated films that do very well OS have more humor and/or levity - as good as this movie is, I've observed long stretches where the audience is dead silent.
And even KFP2's $500M OS take was coming off an original that made $416M OS without the benefit of 3D. HTTYD1 only made $277M, and since it doesn't have Minions or broad comedy or any kind of "hook" to it, perhaps it was unrealistic to expect HTTYD2 to almost double the original. If it passes $330m OS it will still have at least as much of an increase as KFP2 did from KFP1 (which is not as good because it will be an increase from a smaller number, but still...)
Aside from the World Cup, aside from TF4, there must be something to the fact that the film has been quite frontloaded in the majority of markets. It's done well, just hasn't broken out. Sigh...
