It might make an appearance at the bottom of the Top 10 later in the evening. Most of its showtimes are after 2PM. It should be above $248 million after today, so $250 million+ can still happen. If it's able to hold onto enough screens over the next 2 weeks, the Obon Week Holiday frame will make sure it happens.

Edge of Tomorrow will eventually appear in the Top 10, too, once Anpanman stops showing for the day (kids/families largely skip evening/night showings, so theaters rarely have showtimes after 3PM for these films) and Mission Impossible: Samurai! weakens (seniors prefer morning showings).

Mid-day Report:

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Sunday Admissions (As of 02:30PM)

Sun. Admissions (% change from last Sun*) - Film (Week in Release)
01. 38,686 - Godzilla (NEW)
02. 27,391 (-46%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 2)
03. 25,414 (-36%) - Maleficent (Week 4)
04. 19,355 (-42%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 2)
05. 13,003 - Eight Ranger 2 (NEW)
06. 10,845 (-45%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 2)
07. 7,984 (-32%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 3)
08. 5,667 (-55%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 2)
09. 3,943 (--) - Time Trip App (NEW)
10. 3,004 (-61%) - Frozen (Week 20)
*Same point in time.

Very, very good for Godzilla. It should get close to 75,000-80,000 admissions for the day here, and with the 70,710 admissions from yesterday, it's looking at about 145-150,000 admissions from these locations. That should get it close to 400,000 admissions and around ¥600 million ($6 million) for the weekend, and a 3-day total near ¥800 million ($8 million).

$8m would be great. I hope it catches on. Japanese people are known for liking different stuff, and Godzilla is not your usual Hollywood fare, so perhaps they will take to it and it can have a Frozen-type run.

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (07/26-27)

Weekend Admissions (% change from last Wknd) - Film (Week in Release)
01. 138,302 - Godzilla (NEW)
02. 80,590 (-44%) - Maleficent (Week 4)
03. 56,613 (-49%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 2)
04. 55,675 (-54%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 2)
05. 47,063 - Eight Ranger 2 (NEW)
06. 20,704 (-56%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 2)
07. 19,494 (-36%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 3)
08. 12,449 (-63%) - Edge of Tomorrow (Week 4)
09. 11,850 (-49%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 2)
10. 11,413 - Time Trip App (NEW)

Godzilla ended up dropping on Sunday, but just 4% which is perfectly fine for a big weekend opener. It should end up with 350-400,000 admissions and ¥550-600 million ($5.5-6.0 million) for the weekend, for a 3-day total of ¥700-750 million ($7.0-7.5 million). The goal now is to reach ¥4 billion ($40 million), but it could go as high as ¥5 billion ($50 million).

Eight Ranger 2 may have gotten close to 150,000 admissions with these figures, so ¥200 million ($2.0 million) looks good if the pre-sales don't lower the avg. ticket price too much. It's looking at a 30/40% increase over the first film.

The drops for the holdovers look severe, but they won't be that bad when the weekend ranking comes out. Movix Cinemas (apart of the chains where data is collected above) had a discount day last Sunday, so films performed worse at their locations than normal this weekend. I can see the drops improving anywhere from 5-10% for most of the holdovers.

30,000+/60,000+

*Stage Greeting/Discount Day boost.

Godzilla's Toho OD/OW multiplier was x1.95, which is comparable to The Wind Rises (x1.96), Maleficent (x1.94), and Fast and Furious 6 (x1.94).

I don't think its Toho OW/Overall Weekend multiplier will be as low as Maleficent's (x4.16), but I don't think it'l be as high as Fast & Furious 6 (x4.91) either. The Wind Rises's x4.47 looks most likely which would put Godzilla at 357,000 admissions for the weekend. Aeon Cinemas does have a lot of discounts going on this Summer though, so the multiplier could inch a little higher. We'll see.

The new Godzilla should get near 3 million admissions.

Godzilla is the second most-attended movie franchise in Japan's history, behind Doraemon which took 1st place last year.

And I'm glad they announced that Mothra and King Ghidorah will be in the upcoming sequel. They're Godzilla's most popular enemies and most profitable at the box-office, too.

Weekend Ranking (07/26-27)

01 (--) Godzilla (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) Maleficent (Disney) Week 4
03 (03) Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 2
04 (02) Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 2
05 (--) Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) DEBUT
06 (04) Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 2
07 (06) Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) Week 3
08 (08) Planes: Fire & Rescue (Disney) Week 2
09 (--) Time Trip App (Toei) DEBUT
10 (05) Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 4

>Godzilla finally breaks Disney's 19th-consecutive week hold atop the box-office. Over the weekend, the film earned ¥508,449,700 ($5.0 million) with 339,048 admissions on 427 screens. Since Friday, it took in ¥683,483,500 ($6.7 million) with 459,860 admissions after 3-days in release.

The opening is pretty much in-line with what ticket sales had it doing over the weekend, if a little less, but it's a very good start to what had potential to be a major disappointment. A lot of people think "Godzilla is from Japan, so it'll be huge there!", which isn't the case whatsoever. Legs this time of year are strong (and for practically anything), too, so it'll be targeting a ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) total.

Also, this number is quite impressive to me because it played on far fewer screens than your normal Hollywood blockbuster since Toho was its distributor in Japan. Without doing any research, this is one of the highest debuts I can remember for a Hollywood film playing on fewer than 500 screens.

>Memories of Marnie holds onto its 3rd place ranking, dropping a pretty hefty 42% in its second weekend. It grossed ¥220,268,800 ($2.1 million) with 163,969 admissions, bringing its 9-day total above ¥1 billion ($10 million). The second weekend drop is the worst hold I can recall for a Studio Ghibli film, worse than Tales from Earthsea's 35%, so that's not very encouraging.

However, the fact it still managed to exceed the 1 billion mark after 9-days is a good sign as it should be running closely behind From Up on Poppy Hill and Wolf Children (non-Ghibli, but comparable in openings) after two weeks, two films that opened on the same weekend with very similar numbers. Both of those earned over ¥4 billion ($40 million), so all may not be lost for Marnie just yet... that 42% drop is worrisome though.

>Eight Ranger 2 came in much, much lower than its admissions were indicating. It only took in ¥124,763,200 ($1.2 million) with 93,633 admissions on 160 screens. That's a 17% drop from the first film. This also means that over half of its weekend admissions came from Toho, Movix, Kinezo, and 109 Cinemas which account for 40% of the nations screens. The means it played horribly at pretty much every other chain. This is still July/August though, and multipliers of 7/8 or higher are common for about any film, so ¥1 billion ($10 million) is still doable.

>And finally, Time Trip App was a bust for Toei. Playing on 254 screens, it only earned ¥51,013,200 ($500,000) with 39,085 admissions. It'll probably earn around 300 million ($3 million).

>Also, Frozen finally fell out of the Top 10 (ranked 11th) after 20 weeks. It's total is now up to ¥25.21 billion ($247.6 million) with 19.85 million admissions.

What do bad legs in Japan typically look like? Because it seems like worldwide the film has had abnormally terrible legs, and I'd be surprised if Japan is much different. Any idea how WOM is for it there?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Wknd Ranking (Godzilla)/2014 Chart Upd
Basically a multiplier below x4 is considered really poor. A multiplier of x5/6 is the normal, average multiplier as you see on the multiplier list above.

WOM seems fine for Godzilla. User reviews are in the 3-4 out of 5 range, with the consensus being that it's "good enough" this time. It won't get anywhere near as low as a multiplier of x4, especially this time of year. Sub-x4 multipliers are reserved for very niche or very, very poorly received films.

Kamen Rider films, imported (non-Spider-Man) superhero films like Thor, Captain America or X-Men, fanbase drive titles like Gundam, etc., regularly see sub-x4 multipliers. Then very badly reviewed, received titles like RoboCop, 47 Ronin, etc. struggle to reach a x4 multiplier.

Anything below a multiplier of x6 for a July/August release is pretty damn bad considering we're in the middle of the strongest 6 weeks of the year. Weekdays are a lot stronger than weekends right now. Godzilla should see a multiplier around x7.

10 (08) ¥30 million ($0.3 million), -46%, ¥1.46 billion ($14.3 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 5

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc, the first half of the sequel to the 2012 original hit, opened yesterday (Friday) and did approx. ¥220 million ($2.1 million), which earned it the best Friday opening of the year.

Granted, Friday was the 1st of the month when tickets are 40% off at all major chains (hence the Friday release), but it's still very impressive. But while impressive, the big Friday number should deflate the weekend frame and reaching ¥500 million ($5 million) looks too difficult. The 3-day results, however, should come in quite high. I won't be surprised if its 3-day is ahead of Godzilla's 3-day last weekend.

>The holdovers should all see good holds with Maleficent and Memories of Marnie seeing the best holds if the past week was any indication. Both films played very well over the past 5 days and have pre-sales for today not far off of last Saturday's.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin Atta
After all the morning showings, Rurouni Kenshin looks about even with Godzilla last weekend. Kenshin really took off in the evening yesterday, so it might be end up with a higher opening weekend than Godzilla (at least in admissions).

All the holdovers are doing very well. Memories of Marnie is holding the best among the Top 10 right now and may see a sub-20% drop, and all the other films are looking at drops in the 20-30% range at this point except for Godzilla and Eight Ranger 2. Godzilla is down about 45% compared to last week at the same point in time, but I think that'll improve a little bit. And Eight Ranger 2 is down over 70%, but its opening day was quite inflated last week so that's expected.

From the picture you posted, Rurouni Kenshin looks pretty cool. I might try and check it out.

The first film was quite good and has been Warner Bros. biggest hit in Japan since Harry Potter concluded. And the sequel(s) look really good, too. Part 1 opened this weekend; Part 2 will open in September. They also looks quite expensive. Reviews for Part 1 are also strong.

Mid-day Report:

Toho Cinemas Saturday Admissions [As of 02:30PM]
16,265 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (NEW)
10,236 (-41%) - Godzilla (Week 2)
8,086 (-22%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 3)
6,973 (-25%) - Maleficent (Week 5)
6,019 (-19%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 3)
3,687 (-71%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 2)
2,470 (-34%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 3)
1,657 (-22%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 4)
1,552 (-31%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 3)
714 (-11%) - Anpanman: The Appleboy and Everyone's Wishes (Week 5)

Rurouni Kenshin is tracking behind Godzilla last Saturday by 5% at Toho Cinemas at the mid-day point. Let's see if it can close the gap or pull ahead by the end of the day. Godzilla sold 40,635 tickets at Toho Cinemas last Saturday.

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Saturday Admissions [As of 02:30PM]
34,057 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (NEW)
19,014 (-39%) - Godzilla (Week 2)
15,247 (-19%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 3)
12,947 (-24%) - Maleficent (Week 5)
11,237 (-16%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 3)
5,682 (-70%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 2)
5,268 (-26%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 3)
4,001 (-21%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 4)
2,872 (-33%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 3)
1,658 (-13%) - Anpanman: The Appleboy and Everyone's Wishes (Week 5)

Rurouni Kenshin is tracking ahead of Godzilla last Saturday at the four chains when combined by 9% at the mid-day point. If it can keep this lead, or improve upon it, then it has a good chance at beating Godzilla's opening last weekend. Godzilla sold 70,710 tickets last Saturday at these locations.

Saturday Results:

Toho Cinemas Saturday Admissions [08/02]
37,829 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (NEW)
23,664 (-42%) - Godzilla (Week 2)
15,797 (-19%) - Maleficent (Week 5)
11,446 (-21%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 3)
9,785 (-22%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 3)
6,067 (-69%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 2)
2,706 (-33%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 3)
2,432 (-26%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 4)
1,758 (-34%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 3)
1,562 (-36%) - Edge of Tomorrow (Week 5)

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Saturday Admissions [08/02]
76,319 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (NEW)
42,322 (-40%) - Godzilla (Week 2)
27,990 (-21%) - Maleficent (Week 5)
20,856 (-18%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 3)
18,633 (-19%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 3)
9,128 (-68%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 2)
6,163 (-25%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 3)
5,836 (-23%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 4)
4,127 (-36%) - Edge of Tomorrow (Week 5)
3,448 (-31%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 3)

Rurouni Kenshin beat Godzilla last Saturday by 8% here despite being behind at Toho Cinemas for the day and probably beat Godzilla last Saturday as a result since Aeon Cinemas should be strong for Kenshin, too. Toho Cinemas was actually a little weak (comparatively speaking) for the original film.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc should be looking at ¥475-550 million ($4.7-5.5 million) with 350-400,000 admissions over the weekend, and a 3-day total of ¥675-750 million ($6.7-7.5 million) with 450-500,000 admissions.

By comparison, the first film opened to ¥399.5 million ($5.0 million) with 295,319 admissions, and finished with ¥3.01 billion ($38.3 million) and 2.42 million admissions in 2012, and has since been Warner Bros.'s most-successful film in Japan.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin Atta

The live-action Attack on Titan film that was planned for next year is now going to be split into two film to be released back-to-back next Summer. The franchise has become a monster hit in Japan since last year, and the live-action adaptation has some the industry's leading visual effects artists and talent behind it.

Plus, the series creator, Hajime Isayama, is supervising the production and assisting with the story and new enemies/characters. This is very important and will assure fans to come out in droves.

The principal cast has also been revealed, though their character roles are still a mystery besides Haruma Miura playing the lead role of Eren Jaeger:

Haruma Miura (Gokusen, The Eternal Zero) - Eren Jaeger
Hiroki Hasegawa (the upcoming live-action Jellyfish Princess, Why Don't You Play in Hell)
Kiko Mizuhara (Norwegian Wood, Helter Skelter)
Kanata Hongō (Prince of Tennis, Nana 2)
Takahiro Miura (live-action Space Battleship Yamato)
Nanami Sakuraba (Twin Spica)
Satoru Matsuo (Thermae Romae )
Satomi Ishihara (No Longer Human, Sadako 3D)
Pierre Taki (Linda Linda Linda)
Jun Kunimura (Audition, Kill Bill)
Shu Watanabe (Kamen Rider OOO)
Ayame Misaki (Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters)
Rina Takeda (High Kick Girl)

No exact release dates have been revealed yet, but it's likely the first half will arrive early/mid-July to kick off the Summer, with the second half to follow late-July/early August in time for Obon.

Releasing two-part films has become a pretty popular tend in Japan recently. The SPEC sequel was split last Fall, this summer's Rurouni Kenshin as well, and the upcoming Parasyte film later this year will be split as well. And in the end, it's the best decision. It's allowed studios to spend more to make a better quality film, a budget all these titles deserve, that a single release could have trouble making back alone.
