Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
I really don't understand how you can't see that a film that has already outdone every Potter film in previews doesn't have a chance. Hunger games went from 19 to 25 in 2 films. Next one will obviously increase. 4th film will as well. Hunger Games can and will increase big on the 4th film. Will it hit 40+ that remains to be seen, but the fact that nothing is in the way of this franchise now helps big time.
Also 1924 you're already predicting these films as if they already came out. 5 years time, it'll happen with ease.

Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
We'll see with Mockingjay. It theoretically could continue to increase. I just get the feeling it won't. The final Twilight film saw very little jump in midnight gross.

zwackerm wrote: Mockingjay Part 2 has no chance. Catching Fire showed that the franchise, while big, isn't going to see much growth. Star Wars Episode 7 is opening in December! If it opens to 150 million, it will overtake Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time. There is no way a film does 50 million in previews and does less than 180-190 million for the weekend. BvS will not do it id The dark Knight Rises can't, Justice League maybe if BvS is well received. Avenger 3 is not going to do it. Captain America 2 was the first Marvel film to see any kind of front loading opening weekend, I don't think it is going to get that much more frontloaded any time soon. My goodness. This is really, really stupid. You do realize that EVERY (but the last) HP film made less than the first one, right? It sure showed a lot of growth! And to compare it to Twilight is stupid as well. It went from $7+, to $26 to $30 to $30. Hunger Games went from $19 to $25. A much slower growth rate and not the huge jump Twilight took.

HPDH2 wasn't a straight up midnight film.

Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
CF increased from its predecessor while it opened slightly lesser none of the blockbuster books-to-movie franchises have done that.

Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
It also increased 30% in previews, that's not "no increase at all" Taking in that the final film has no hype and the rest of the films have similar increases it'll be looking at 43.6 million. Last Hunger Games will beat it by 100k on that alone. Obviously the last film in the series will help it even more.

Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
It didn't have previews, just midnights. Almost every theater it was playing in had midnights, and had it playing to sold out or near sold out showings on all their screens. My theater sold out all 12 screens with so many people they couldn't even fit inside the lobby or halls.
BOM would have separated any pre-midnight earnings if it had any, too, like they did for all films back then.

Re: There will be no more movie theaters...
Starting in 07 with Order of the Phoenix, every Potter film had 10PM showings. They started doing unofficial previews that just got lumped into midnight viewings around 05 with a lot of bigger films. Hell I saw Iron Man at an 7PM Thursday night preview when it came out in 08.

Well then I don't know why BOM would neglect to mention this fact.

zwackerm wrote: Well then I don't know why BOM would neglect to mention this fact. Because at the time, they weren't announced like they were today. It was more like special screenings. But my 10 PM was very close to sold out for DH2. Also BOM isn't the most accurate of sites, it simply has the most the convenient, and access to a lot of data.

 Harry Potter 8's Midnight FOREVER
Looks like the Hunger Games franchise won't be beating Potter. The only movie I see with a chance of beating it any time soon is Justice League if BvS is well received.

I also don't see Justice League beating it either. BvS is basically a Justice League movie. It has all the elements, just not the title. I cannot see Avengers-type demand for Justice League.

That would set it up for a gross of around 600 million, which I would say is unlikely at this point.

Star Wars is a different beast than any other film that has ever opened in December. Also you have to consider the sequels, they could open in the summer.
