DVDs and blurays sell more.Only Frozen has sold a million units this year, whereas DVDs of popular movies still can sell a million units in a day. Frozen sold over 3 million in one day.

Only the Frozen Cd has sold over a million units, whereas nearly every dvd that is any kind of hit sells over 1 million units eventually.

You said that "hardly anyone will go" to theaters, just like CDs today. Yet CDs are still the most purchased music media, ahead of digital sales. So your comparison is wrong.

zwackerm is wrong, no doubt, but I would imagine downloads are more popular than CDs.

Streaming is the most popular music media, by far. But as far as purchases? CDs are still #1.

But zwackerm didn't specify that the media has to be "purchased". Anyway, his comparison was dumb, as I already pointed out. To compare cinemas to a music-related experience, you should concerts, not buying CDs or downloading/streaming music.

I'm the only person I know who still buys CDs, but most people I know still buy DVDs on occasion. I find it hard to believe more Dvds are sold.

http://grantland.com/features/the-case-for-cds/

CD sales represented 57.2 percent of total album sales. In the past six months, 62.9 million CDs were sold, nearly 10 million more than the 53.8 million downloaded albums. It might be a far cry from the 70.3 billion songs that were streamed during the period, though...

Did you poll them? You seem very confident in your "Absolute" statements. It's still pretty safe to say the midnight record will be beaten in the next 2-3 years. The whole thread is incorrect, let alone that idea that movie theaters that continue to be on a steady increase in construction, would just start closing down all the theaters in the next 20 years.

The only way this thread is a success is if there is in fact an alien invasion, zombie apocalypse, or world wide nuclear war.

Thank you for getting this thread back to what it was meant to be about. We will just have to see. I'm sure I'm right, but we won't know for awhile.

TheGun you think the "actual" midnight record will be beaten in next 2-3 years? I know Star Wars sequels are on their way but do you think they will beat the mark ?

DH2 was not midnight exclusive, I can't say that enough. I'm not sure what the distinct midnight record is, no one does. I do know for a fact that Fanboyism will return at some point and whether it be inflation or a franchise with such great will it will happen.

No one ever thought Titanic would beat, no one thought a film would open to 200 million. Same with Spidey's opening weekend record. I've been following these boards since 1998 to know that "never" is the worst prediction anyone can make. I really don't even see why this is a debate.

I agree that DH2 was not midnight exclusive and I remember some discussions about its 3D and early showtimes that helped it take the record (no I am not saying that it didn't beat Twilight here....click click Brian)

What I am asking is that you believe it will be THAT soon, I mean I don't see any specific huge release that would generate that big of midnights even with 3D, not even Star Wars...specially because they are being released in December.

I changed it. DH2's late night gross will never be beaten ever. Not by Star Wars. Maybe by the Justice League if BvS doesn't suck and DC superhero films become more front loaded. But really, all the franchises with the potential to break records are ending (Harry Potter, Nolan Batman) or becoming so that no one cares any more (POTC, Spider-Man, Shrek). The only franchises I think still guaranteed to open to over 100 million today are The Hunger Games, The Avengers team up films, the Star Wars films, and BvS and the films that follow it if it is well received. I believe Bond and Fast 7 will also open to over 100 million, but many people disagree. And new franchises are not being started because no one is going to see original films (like Edge of Tomorrow) or when they do check out the original, they don't feel tempted to check out the sequel (HTTYD 2).

I think there will always be theaters (especially in 20 years, which really isn't that long in the big scheme of things) although there will probably be less of them and there will be a shift to large format/IMAX. I'm sure they'll eventually come up with some jaw-dropping new format (IMAXTREME? 100 feet high! 140 feet wide!) that will put butts into seats.

I would say that day-and-date studio fare is inevitable, but the exhibitors have been successfully waging the war against it for over twenty years. There's no reason to think they're going to relent over the next two decades.

There are plenty of films: I'll list them again and go into more detail.

1. Mockinjay Part 2. Catching Fire has already done 25 million in it's previews which is higher than any Potter film outside of DH2. It's the exact same kind of situation. Part 1 may only do about 25-33 in previews, but being the last film in the series, a shit load of people will come out for part 2 previews. I would say 43-48 million. If MP1 can do 35 million in previews this is even more sure that MP2 will do it in 16 months.

2. Star Wars Episode 7- An obvious favorite. The last SW film's previews were legendary and held for 3 years. And that was from Wednesday previews and kids were still in school. The memory of the prequels have been washed away by the release of George Lucas, and the bringing back of the original cast, which is what every fan has ever dreamed of. Add in it will be the first modern SW film to have a Friday release, and kids and people will actually already be off of school. Where as ROTS did 50 million in one day, EP7 has a great chance at 50 million in previews. One thing is for sure, it will at least do 35 million in previews. If it fails to do it, Ep. 9 will do it for the same reason Ep.3 and DH2 had such increase in previews. There fans are loyal and the last in the series is an event that even casual movie goers can get into.

3. Batman v Superman if it moves to July has a great shot, as will the Justice League as well. DC fans have continuously proven to be much more midnight friendly than Marvel, and TDKR has already hit the 30 million mark.

4. Avengers 2 maybe not, but Avengers 3 yes. The thing about Avengers that is really promising is how backloaded the first film was. 19 million on a 200+ weekend. Less than 10% of the audience went out for previews where as 25% came out for DH2. People still looked at Avengers as the first or a new property where as DH2 was the last in a 8 series of a quality films. The % for Avengers will only go up and if Avengers can get up to the typical 20% of the audience then films that will continue to do 220+ OW, it'll hit 44+ by default.

Hmm alright so you are banking on these and I don't think they will make it. The highest chance is for Mockinjay 2 but I somehow feel it will miss the mark without 3D support, hopefully they give it IMAX treatment for the last two movies.

I'm not saying its impossible for it to be beaten. It is just my opinion that it is very possible that nothing beats it.

Mockingjay Part 2 has no chance. Catching Fire showed that the franchise, while big, isn't going to see much growth. Star Wars Episode 7 is opening in December! If it opens to 150 million, it will overtake Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time. There is no way a film does 50 million in previews and does less than 180-190 million for the weekend. BvS will not do it id The dark Knight Rises can't, Justice League maybe if BvS is well received. Avenger 3 is not going to do it. Captain America 2 was the first Marvel film to see any kind of front loading opening weekend, I don't think it is going to get that much more frontloaded any time soon.

one of the reasons DH2 annihilated the record is because it opened in July when kids were out of schools. Movies like Avengers 2, SW7, and Batman vs Superman could potentially have done it I think but releasing when schools are still in session will pretty much prevent that from happening
