this will not break out. The trailers are lame and silly looking and it has way more competition than Cap 2. I have yet to see any hype outside of geeks yet.

It will not break out for sure. I expect a Watchmen type run.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
This is being way overestimated. I am seeing hulk numbers at best. Its way too weird and lacks star power(voice cast dont count). Plus I dont see how they are going to tie in the avengers to this. Does it even happen in earth?

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I'd like it to do well, because it seems like such a risky move. If it fails, Marvel is going to cling to the vanilla. Really, I would not be at all surprised if the whole Edgar Wright debacle is a direct result of Disney being freaked out by Guardians.

I think this can do $35-50 mil OW and $130-160 mil Total

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
Hulk 2008 adjusts to 61/150. Now while Hulk may be a more well known character it was also coming off a heavily panned predecessor. With Marvel brand in full force plus and a strong/appealing marketing campaign $50M+ shouldn't be that difficult.
I honestly think the AOU tease could mean a difference of at least $5M or so. It's OW IM might show quite a bit of frontloadedness though.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
idk, I think the lack of a huuuuge film in July will help this out and get more general audiences to see it. I think an opening like Watchmen, mid-50's is more realistic but I think 60+ is possible.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I think anything over $35 mil OW is very good for this. Anything over $50 mil OW would be GREAT for it. And anything above... $65? mil OW would be a huge breakout.

The film resembles more of Serenity and Cowboys & Aliens rather than a Marvel hero franchise. I don't think it will be a big hit

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I want this to be a big hit so badly. I don't see any way that I don't love this movie. I think just the presence of a talking raccoon is enough to get little boys to beg their parents to see this. Marvel fans will show up regardless. I'd be disappointed if this makes less than 50M OW. I'm hoping for 60M+. They could add at least 10M to the opening if they would just connect it to The Avengers in the U.S. advertising.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I saw the trailer for this during X-Men and it definitely got the biggest response. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in that showing went opening weekend the laughs and discussion it got.

Reactions to the 17 minute sneak peek are really positive. If they are able to keep up the momentum and reviews are good then I can definitely see a $60M+ opening.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I'm expecting $60m to be the floor. I think there is genuine interest in this. The back end of the summer is going to have a few breakouts and this will lead the pack.

Magnus wrote: The interest is mostly internet based. It can do 60m OW but that's near it's max, not min. Agreed. But, and I've said this elsewhere (maybe even in this thread?), I think it also has an advantage of having the most distinct marketing campaign of the summer alongside Godzilla. That can do a lot in keeping up awareness and interest, and after a pretty dead month that can mean a lot.

It's probably gonna open to $60M+ and finish north of $200M.

My mom thinks this looks stupid. My mom wants to see everything.
Also I've seen the trailer play to crickets during packed CAP 2, ASM2, and DOFP shows.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I'm going to say that a performance along the lines of the first Thor is probably the best case scenario. It's a great thing that it's opening in August when it's at least conceivable that it won't fall victim to the same frontloadedness that has hampered nearly every blockbuster this summer.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy: Will it really be a big hit?
I think an opening between $40-60 mil is expected, and finishing near $150 mil total.
