X-Men: Days of Future Past - $5,805,277 5. A Million Ways to Die in the West - $219,310 ( weekend actual) 6. Judge - $45,152 ( weekend actual) Queen - $28,381 ( weekend actual) Godzilla - $2,773,632 Neighbors - around $903,043 Good start for Overheard 3. Maleficent continues to outhustle the rest of the holdovers. Very strong total. 4m is looking good. Edge of Tomorrow is doing OK. It will pass Oblivion this week. Great total for X-Men though 7m is gone. The Western theme and a lack of starpower killed A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Decent hold for Overheard 3. It'll be interesting to see if it defeats Maleficent with final admissions today. Maleficent will win in gross for sure though. Excellent hold for Maleficent. It will pass both Wanted and Mr & Mrs. Smith's totals this weekend to become Angelina Jolie's biggest live action hit in Hong Kong. Weak for Coming Home. X-Men held up just fine but is it an overcompensation for last week's steep drop? Edge of Tomorrow fell hard. Poor starts for Thermae Romae 2, Brick Mansions and Sabotage. Terrible hold for A Million Ways to Die in the West. It is getting grilled by users. Superb for Queen.

Re: HK 6/5: Overheard 3 towers over all; Maleficent #2; TF4
More on Transformers 4...as most of you know, Transformers 4 will have its world premiere in HK but that has not stopped Paramount and local theaters from taking no prisoners with its pricing strategy. Transformers 4 ticket prices at Broadway theater chain.Ticket prices are about $25 HKD ($3.25 US) more than The Avengers on average. That is a massive difference. Even most tentpole films are only separated by $5-$10 at the most. While some of the uptick in price can be attributed to the long running time, some of it is because Intercontinental (Paramount's HK distributor) feels that this will be the event film of the summer (and they are not wrong either).
Theater | Movie | Ticket Prices (HKD) | Ticket Prices (USD) |
Palace IFC | The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey | $180 | $23 |
| Transformers: Age of Extinction | $175 | $22.50 |
| The Avengers | $135 | $17.50 |
| Maleficent (regular) | $125 | $16 |
| Life of Pi | $120 | $15.50 |
At Palace IFC, the difference is even greater with $40 between the 2 films...and there is no HFR in sight. If we take The Avengers admissions and apply it to Transformers 4, factoring in its $25-$30 headstart, then it would make over $6m for the 4-day weekend. 6m is impossible at the moment as Transformers 4 will not be equalling The Avengers' admissions but 5m is very possible. At the moment, Transformers 4 is doing very well in pre-sales. In IMAX, it is doing gangbusters. Peak showtimes are nearly a quarter filled less than a day old.

Didn't realise that Sabotage was released there yet. GOOD NEWS Tomorrow, I shall go and see it, plus A Million Ways to Die in the West. I love HK movie days. So much more interesting than shitty China film days.

Can't believe Maleficent is doing SO WELL in HK. I guess kids have nothing much to see is really helping it out.

Outstanding hold for Maleficent. Good holds for the rest of the top 4. The 4 openers did not do well. A Million Ways to Die in the West sunk. Strong for Queen. A dumpster weekend. Coming Home, Zhang Yimou's return to art-house drama after the big-budget The Flowers of War, is doing respectably and looks to have good to great legs. Brick Mansions doing better than Sabotage just goes to show the waning popularity of Arnie. Outside of the top 10, the much-delayed Hong Kong horror The Second Coming plays in five almost empty theaters (that's real horror!). Out of the Furnace is not doing any better. The cannon fodder of the week goes to China's production City Game, averaging 3 people per showing. The theaters really should have kept The Little House and The Eternal Zero, two Japanese releases getting rave reviews in HK.

Yet HK's box office receipt has not seen much downside so far this year, from my observation. Could it have been helped by the more flexible pricing strategy?

Voting is way more interesting than the box office right now in HK. The unofficial referendum on the mechanism for picking candidates to stand the general election of chief executive (the territory's No. 1 official) is entering its second day. The option with most votes will become the proposal the Occupy Central Movement puts forward to the HK government. Turnout has hit 480,000 three hours ago after 25 hours of voting (via smartphone or computer with valid ID). In-person voting will start tomorrow so expect more upticks. If I remember correctly, the turnout has already surpassed any past referendums in the city. According to Alan Wong of the New York Times ( https://twitter.com/byAlanWong), this unofficial vote has already reached one-third of the turnout of the last official legislative election.

Re: HK 6/12 THU: Maleficent/Overheard lock horns; TF4 5m OW?
Maleficent retains the top spot in its fourth week in release after being dethroned by Overheard 3 two weeks ago. Dragon 2 previews and political thriller Z Storm battle it out for No. 2. Overheard 3 drops to No. 4. X-Men: Days of Future Past is still strong at No. 5. Edge of Tomorrow at No. 6. Zhang Yimou's Coming Home No. 7. Japanese Thermae Romae 2 No. 8.
The Attorney, a civil rights drama from South Korea, has a respectable debut in limited release at No. 9. The Raid 2: Berandal flops at No. 10. South Korean rom-com Marriage Blue bombs at No. 11. Beyond Beauty, Taiwan from Above, a nature documentary offering a bird-eye view of Taiwan's wildlife, plays to two full-houses of audiences at No. 12. May We Chat (a micro-dating drama), Draft Day, and Walk of Shame are all beyond bad.
Another dumpster weekend.

Lots of showtimes for Transformers 4. With its runtime clocking in at a bloated 165-166 minutes, it has garnered an incredible 4-5 screens at most locations. Considering that even with no trailers shown before the movie, theaters can only run 5 showtimes per day (6 if you include midnight) on 1 screen. Still, a few locations have put it on 6 screens at night. Pre-sales so far are looking very good too. Maleficent is the main big winner of the holdovers. This and Z Storm will split the lone 7 PM showtime depending on the theater. Aside from those 2, it is pretty much a deathblow for the rest. Edge of Tomorrow will get a showtime here and there along with X-Men. The biggest losers this week are last week's openers and Overheard 3. Transformers 4 pre-sales (Part 1)

Excellent pre-sales so far. What will boost Transformers 4's opening day and OW gross are the insane ticket price hikes that have been set by Paramount/Intercontinental. Judging from these pre-sales, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Transformers 4 is looking at a non-holiday opening day record of $900,000. 1m might be a stretch but it is not impossible. After several weeks of bland movies and strong holdovers, viewers are definitely in the mood for something big and explosive. In the midst of Transformers 4 opening, How To Train Your Dragon 2 opened its HK campaign with special screenings last weekend. It will get more sneak previews this weekend but theaters will be reluctant to allocate screens in the morning and afternoon to it over Transformers 4. Last weekend, it placed in the top 5 on Saturday and Sunday and it should continue that into this weekend.

Re: HK: Transformers 4 rolling out to OD/OW record? Dragon 2
Quote: Fuck this Occupy Central shit. I believe Hong Kong people should be entitled to the right to nominate and to be nominated in the election of their own leader. They have every right to speak against any attempts to screen out candidates by a political test. The Occupy Central movement, up to this point, has done a pretty good job in informing people of this and providing a platform for debate (or what they like to call deliberation). The three D-Days (Deliberation Days) they held citywide helped to build momentum for the referendum, which has really united the often disorganized and multifaceted pan-democratic camp. They also seemed to have mobilized the support of the voters too, as evidenced by the high turnout. Hong Kong always has the spirit of political dissent and not caving into the authority. That's what I like about it.

In our continuing coverage of Transformers 4's pre-sales, it has crossed 1,000 admissions at Palace APM on opening day. For the most part, pre-sales are looking OK. Afternoon is lagging behind a bit while shows after 10 PM are doing quite well. What is most impressive is Transformers' Thursday midnights. Both 3D and 2D have gotten a fair number of people attending those shows. Morning shows are doing well.
| Thursday adm. | (so far) | | June 26 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | Transformers: Age of Extinction | -- | 30,850 | -- |
2 | Maleficent | -- | 1,041 | -- |
3 | Z Storm | -- | 751 | -- |
4 | X-Men: Days of Future Past | -- | 167 | -- |

6 | Edge of Tomorrow | -- | 156 | -- |
7 | Mr. Morgan's Last Love | -- | 111 | -- |
8 | Overheard 3 | -- | 102 | -- |
9 | Thermae Romae 2 | -- | 76 | -- |
9 | Judge! | -- | 76 | -- |
Seems a bit low but the real issue won't be how many admissions it takes in on opening weekend but how much of an advantage it will get with the extremely high ticket prices set by Intercontinental.
Movie | OD pre-sales adm. | % diff |
Transformers: Age of Extinction 3D | 30,850 | |
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 | 54,986 | -43.9% |
Captain America 2 | 13,794 | +123.6% |
Monsters University | 34,005 | -9.3% |
Man of Steel | 12,350 | +149.8% |
Iron Man 3 | 46,074 | -33.0% |
Iron Man 2 | 31,977 | -3.5% |
The Dark Knight Rises | 38,750 | -20.4% |
The Amazing Spider-Man | 32,580 | -5.3% |
The Avengers | 47,317 | -34.8% |
Transformers 3 | 44,161 | -30.1% |
Harry Potter 7-2 | 62,089 | -50.3% |
Toy Story 3 | 32,294 | -4.5% |
Pirates 4 | 21,559 | +43.1% |
Shrek 3 | 49,634 | -37.8% |
The Hobbit | 18,440 | +67.3% |
Mission Impossible 4 | 24,390 | +26.5% |
It is far behind Iron Man 3 and The Avengers at this point in admissions but ticket prices will boost Transformers 4. It is even behind Transformers 3 in admissions but T4 is much longer than T3 so opening day admissions won't nearly be as frontloaded as T3.

Very good number for Transformers 4. To nab nearly 50% as walk-ins for an almost 3 hour long movie is excellent IMO. Transformers 4 opening day est. - $875,000 ( non-holiday opening record) Ticket prices being astronomically high will offset the lower admissions by Transformers 4. It will be close in terms of which movie gets the non-holiday opening record. Maleficent and Z Storm held relatively well.

The gap in admissions is huge but Transformers 4 makes up for it with huge ticket price hikes.

Amazing for Transformers 4. Iron Man 3 barely increased with Friday pre-sales so +9% is a solid increase even with the 165 minute runtime. Huge for Z Storm. This is getting great reviews here. Maleficent is still doing well.

Ouch. A little bit of a shame. It's a good, if unspectacular, thriller.

Still a very good number for Transformers 4. It doesn't quite break the 1m record but it still wallops Iron Man 3's opening day. Thursday Actuals (June 26)1. Transformers 4 - $973,956 ( opening day actual, 65,000 admissions) 2. Maleficent - $4,708,361 (almost 3,200 admissions) 3. Z Storm - $773,977 (4,000 admissions) The Attorney - $38,698 Great opening day for Transformers 4. Maleficent is Angelina Jolie's 2nd biggest hit in HK. Whether or not it passes Kung Fu Panda 2 will be determined in the next few days. Good total for Z Storm. The Attorney is doing very well.

Time for something a bit different. Checking out Transformers 4 at iSQUARE in IMAX on Sunday, seats are filling up quickly. Incredible figures for Transformers 4. No 3 PM showtime seems to be little effect as those admissions have gone to either the 12 PM or 6 PM showtime. Even the midnight showing is selling quite a number of tickets.
