I never heard of Mission: Impossible Samurai before. It's like a cross between two Tom Cruise films. Awesome.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/21-22)
That's its English title which is a little odd.
The actual translation is Super High Speed!! Sankin-kotai! (edo period law which means Alternate Attendance). Sankin-kotai was a policy in edo Japan (1600-1800s) used to control the Daimyo (Lords) in the country. I can see why they'd change the literal translation though.
It's an edo period comedy about a samurai ordered by a corrupt member of the shogunate to perform the sankin-kotai (required law in which a Lord has to spend different years outside of his land) on a Daimyo (or Lord) of a nearby domain so he can have access to the gold in in the area. The trip normally takes 8 days to return back to edo (formally Tokyo), but he was ordered to do so in only 5 days. Hence where the "Mission Impossible" title came from I suppose.
I think it'll be interesting and fun, so I'll probably seek it out near the end of the year. A lot of Japanese comedies have exaggerate acting and over-the-top events, which are usually a blast.
“Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.” "Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."

To be honest, I wasn't aware that the Japs made comedies. I thought they focused on horrors and anime.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/21-22)
Drama is the most-popular genre by far. There are so many drama films and tv shows.
Comedy is a popular genre, too. There are quite a few comedy films and tv shows. Though only domestic comedies have any success. The highest-grossing Japanese film this calendar year is a comedy - Thermae Romae II, and it'll probably be the highest-grossing overall live-action film (including Hollywood films) of the 2014 calendar year, too. Hollywood comedies and the vast majority of imported comedies barely make anything if they even get released.
Horror is probably the least-popular genre. There aren't many horror films made, and most of them are poorly received and underwhelm at the box-office. A few can breakout, though it usually requires a strong critical reception with a notable performance. Japan is known for The Ring and The Grudge, but outside of those, the genre is very weak.

I suppose to the general International audience, Japan is known for horror and anime, but to an insider like you, you know that comedies and dramas are the most well-known and popular. I suppose outside of Japan (apart from HK), or in the west, nobody knows of Thermae Romae II and the like, but they know of The Ring, The Grudge, and all the Hentai stuff, so this is what forms our opinion.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/21-22)
Weekend Estimates [06/21-22]
01 (01) ¥322 million ($3.1 million), -18%, ¥23.75 billion ($232.9 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 15 02 (--) ¥215 million ($2.1 million), 0, Mission: Impossible Samurai (Shochiku) DEBUT 03 (02) ¥163 million ($1.6 million), -36%, ¥765 million ($7.6 million), Noah (Paramount) Week 2 04 (--) ¥91 million ($900,000), Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (Toei) DEBUT 05 (03) ¥79 million ($780,000), -16%, ¥265 million ($2.6 million), Climbing to Spring (Toho) Week 2 06 (--) ¥62 million ($610,000), 0, ¥80 million ($790,000), 300: Rise of an Empire (Warner Bros.) DEBUT 07 (04) ¥42 million ($410,000), -43%, ¥805 million ($8.0 million), Monsterz (Warner Bros.) Week 4 08 (05) ¥39 million ($380,000), -43%, ¥940 million ($9.3 million), X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) Week 4 09 (06) ¥37 million ($360,000), -33%, ¥1.02 billion ($10.0 million), A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 5 10 (--) ¥29 million ($280,000), 0, The Round Table (Toho Video Division) DEBUT 11 (08) ¥21 million ($200,000), -32%, ¥160 million ($1.5 million), Persona 3 the Movie 2: A Midsummer Knight's Dream (Aniplex) Week 3 12 (07) ¥17 million ($165,000), -56%, ¥500 million ($4.9 million), All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye (Toho) Week 4 13 (09) ¥17 million ($160,000), -45%, ¥4.31 billion ($42.2 million), Thermae Romae II (Toho) Week 9 14 (10) ¥13 million ($125,000), -54%, ¥240 million ($2.3 million), Pompeii (Gaga) Week 3
>Frozen claims its 15th-consecutive week atop the box-office, the second most of any film after Spirited Away (16 weeks). It's becoming more vulnerable but I don't think any of next weeks openers will manage to dethrone it, so tying the 16-week record looks pretty good. It won't be able to hold off Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow in its 17th weekend, however.
Frozen should be around ¥23.7/23.8 billion ($232/233 million) after 101 days in release.
>Mission Impossible: Samurai looks to have performed quite well and should give Shochiku another much needed ¥1 billion ($10 million) film for the year.
>Saint Seiya is very much an estimate as its difficult to determine how high its avg. ticket prices may have been. Its estimated admissions are near 70,000, so if that's accurate, it might go a bit higher than what I have above.
>300: Rise of an Empire... well, unless it was playing on a lot more screens than Pompeii was (which could skew the estimates), bombed in high-fashion and could only reach ¥250 million ($2.5 million) with that opening. That would be nearly a 85% decline from the first 300 film.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/21-22)
It's a shame that Frozen won't be able to top Spirited Away's #1 week run. It's like we've been on this journey for so long with it, then it folds at the last hurdle.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (06/21-22)
Well, if both Maleficent/Edge of Tomorrow disappoint and have openings comparable to Oz: The Great and Powerful/Jack Reacher rather than Salt/Oblivion, then I guess it could get 17-consecutive weeks at #1... But that's really, really unlikely.
I know Salt and Maleficent are completely different films with the exception of Jolie, but using Alice in Wonderland as a comparison is pointless.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (06/21-22)
Weekend Ranking [06/21-22]
01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 15 02 (--) Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) DEBUT 03 (02) Noah (Paramount) Week 2 04 (03) Climbing to Spring (Toho) Week 2 05 (--) 300: Rise of an Empire (Warner Bros.) DEBUT 06 (--) Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (Toei) DEBUT 07 (04) Monsterz (Warner Bros.) Week 4 08 (--) 3 Days to Kill (Showgate) DEBUT 09 (05) X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) Week 4 10 (06) A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 5 11 (--) The Round Table (Toho Video Division) DEBUT
>Frozen makes it 15th-consecutive weeks at #1, delivering one of its best holds in the past few weeks. It dropped just -8.3% (-10.1% in admissions) earning ¥364,118,850 ($3.6 million) with 273,943 admissions.
After 101 days in release, it has grossed ¥23.76 billion ($233.0 million) with 18,691,769 admissions. It is still on track to exceed ¥25 billion ($250 million) and 20 million admissions, but I'm doubting it will manage to reach Titanic's ¥26.2 billion total to become the #2 film of all-time (#1 non-Japanese film), and reaching Spirited Away's ¥30.4 billion total is almost impossible now.
>Mission Impossible: Samurai got off to a nice start, taking in ¥200,902,800 ($2.0 million) with 160,528 admissions on 251 screens. This makes it distributor Shochiku's best opening of the year, and it shouldn't have any trouble exceeding the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone either.
>300: Rise of an Empire came in higher than estimates, but still had a very poor debut of ¥87,304,100 ($856,000) with 57,642 admissions on 533 screens. If it gets lucky, then it can earn ¥400 million ($4 million), which would be 74% less than the original 300.
>Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary had a modest opening of ¥82,032,900 ($804,000) with 55,252 admissions on 145 screens. Considering the low screen count, the figure itself isn't too bad, but I'm sure Toei was expecting a bit more. The film looks like it cost quite a bit as well.
>3 Days to Kill makes a surprise showing in the Top 10. No estimate could be gathered, which generally means an outright horrible figure, and while the debut is certainly very weak, at least it made the Top 10. It grossed ¥41,203,400 ($404,000) with 33,176 admission on 184 screens.

Isn't Edge of Tomorrow based on source material from Japan? Even if Maleficent under-performs, I doubt Frozen can beat Edge of Tomorrow.

Yeah, it's adapted from the light novel 'All You Need is Kill" from 2004.
A light novel is as the name suggests, a short novel, generally aimed at young adults. Just a quick search reveals that it was well-received among critics, but I have no idea of its popularity. I haven't seen many expecting huge numbers for it, though, so I'm assuming it wasn't a notable seller (I'll try to find more about it though).
Hollywood adapting or borrowing source material from Japan can often backfire, however, so even if the novel was really popular, that doesn't mean it'll translate into a lot of money at the box-office. In recent years, The Hunger Game films have flopped (Battle Royale plot), Pacific Rim disappointed (Evangelion, Gundam, among others), Dragonball was a major bust, and there are probably more examples that I can't recall at the moment.
But it still stars Tom Cruise, has posted respectable numbers elsewhere, and has strong reviews. I highly doubt it disappoints, and expect solid results in Japan. I'm currently expecting an opening around $3/4 million and a total of $25-30 million.
The film is also rated-G in Japan, so any younger fans the light novel may have that are interested in the Hollywood version will be able to see it.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/28-29)
Weekend Forecast [06/28-29]
01 (01) ¥260 million ($2.6 million), -29%, ¥24.25 billion ($237.7 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 16 02 (02) ¥151 million ($1.5 million), -25%, ¥580 million ($5.7 million), Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) Week 2 03 (03) ¥137 million ($1.3 million), -28%, ¥1.15 billion ($11.2 million), Noah (Paramount) Week 3 04 (04) ¥81 million ($800,000), -15%, ¥570 million ($5.6 million), Climbing to Spring (Toho) Week 3 05 (--) ¥75 million ($740,000), 0, Transcendence (Shochiku/Pony Canyon) NEW 06 (--) ¥50 million ($490,000), 0, ¥90 million ($890,000), Thirst (Gaga) NEW 07 (05) ¥42 million ($410,000), -52%, ¥230 million ($2.2 million), 300: Rise of an Empire (Warner Bros.) Week 2 08 (06) ¥38 million ($370,000), -54%, ¥180 million ($1.7 million), Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (Toei) Week 2 09 (07) ¥35 million ($340,000), -33%, ¥890 million ($8.8 million), Monsterz (Warner Bros.) Week 5 10 (09) ¥31 million ($300,000), -30%, ¥1.09 billion ($10.7 million), A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 6 -11 (08) ¥30 million ($290,000), -36%, ¥1.02 billion ($10.0 million), X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) Week 5
>Frozen had a rough week (by its standards), and is heading into the weekend down about 35% from last Friday. It's also losing, percentage wise, more screens/showtimes than any past weekend, so I think the weekend drop could be similar.
Weekend opener, Thirst, looked like it even won Friday, but it's opening day was very inflated due to stage greetings. Saturday/Sunday admissions are much, much lower, so don't expect it to be a #1 contender despite the Friday performance.
>And speaking of Thirst, a Friday opening is rare for local films, and yesterday (Friday) had stage greetings that will greatly deflate the weekend frame. It reminds me of God's Medical Records 2 from this past March which experienced the same thing. It's Friday gross (inflated due to stage greetings) was either on par or bigger than its weekend gross.
>Transcendence looks to underwhelm/disappoint even with Johnny Depp. Shochiku and Pony Canyon (independent distributor) picked it up pretty late after I'm guessing no major studio wanted it after it bombed everywhere, so it also doesn't have much marketing support behind it either.
>Climbing to Spring is hard to predict. It actually increased in its second weekend (no screens added or anything) and had weekdays that were 75% stronger than its opening weekend, too. Weekdays > Weekends is how Japan's BO operates the majority of the year, but 75% share is very, very high (weekdays usually represent 55-60% of most films' box office). Its weekend prediction is a true guess, really. Every June usually has one film that spawns huge legs (a multiplier approaching or exceeding 10), so maybe it's the one for this year.
>The latest Ghost in the Shell film opens this weekend, but only the first in the Border series managed to crack the Top 10. But with the bottom of the top 10 being around ¥30 million ($300,000), there's a chance it could debut there.
>Edge of Tomorrow also has several preview locations this weekend, which will likely determine how it does when it opens next weekend. If it translates well with those that see it, I expect a strong performance. And if it doesn't, well, probably Oblivion numbers. Having the previews shows confidence in the product, but it's also risky.
Previews are no longer counted towards opening weekends, so its opening weekend might be a little deflated next week, too.

So, when are they added in? or are they just forgotten altogether?

They're just included into the overall total.
So if Edge of Tomorrow does $1 million in previews this weekend and has a $4 million opening next weekend, its total will be up to $5 million.
I think The Amazing Spider-Man changed the ruling on previews/opening weekends. Ever since that film, no previews have been included into opening weekends.

Ah I see. They're included into the total, in this case at the end of Sunday 6th July. Ok. But the opening weekend gross doesn't include them. Well, that's fair and makes total sense. The Japanese always do things right!
