Maleficent (Int'l)
This seems like it should be deserving of its own thread - Jolie is a big draw overseas, and while Oz wasn't that big outside the U.S., Alice in Wonderland kicked quite a bit of butt. Also, it's off to a good start in the UK: Quote: Disney's female-skewing fairy tale Maleficent cast a powerful spell on the U.K. and Irish box office, where it opened to a stellar $2.5 million on Wednesday.
That's ahead of the first-day earnings of fellow Disney release Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and marks the biggest opening day ever for Angelina Jolie in those markets, as well as in Italy and the Philippines.
Even more promising, Maleficent did more than double the business of Oz the Great and Powerful in the U.K. and Ireland. Maleficent opens in every major territory this weekend save for China and Japan, as well as in North America, where it is expected to top the chart with a debut in the $60 million range. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/b ... e=Sailthru

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
This seems like another medicore lame film like Oz and Alice in Wonderland.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
This should be interesting to predict. Having Jolie should change the dynamics of this one. Plus the fairy tail inclusions in the trailer and the general visual action should get Asian audience.
I am thinking $350m OS with about $170m-$180m domestic total for $500m WW total.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
It should definitely open big because of Jolie. The staying power will be a challenge but its definitely not doing big numbers in OS markets.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
Opens with $100.6 million internationally. it opened in all foreign markets with the exception of Japan (and maybe China?), but I imagine legs should be solid - $300+ million overseas and $500+ million WW looks likely.

That's a really nice start as expected, a bit higher than my expected $85m-$90m opening.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
On 20th June, it opens in China. Seven days later it faces competition from Transformers: Age of Extinction, which as we know will be huge here. Godzilla will have already been out for 7 days when it opens too. So it's in the middle of two large Hollywood releases, and in China, they pretty much target the same audience. People here, regardless of age or gender, just want to be wowed, entertained, and taken on a magical journey. Parents will take boys and girls to any of those three movies.
I think Maleficent could do well, but it's going to struggle.

I wonder if Transformers: Age of Extinction will hit $200 million in China.

Worthless is not the word you need. These movies are anything but worthless to Disney.

BK hates live-action Disney fairy tales the way Heinrich Himmler hated Jews.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
wait that's $93.2m for WW right ? That's just fine no longer HUGE. Quote: Maleficent added $59.7 million from 52 markets in its second weekend overseas, bringing the live-action Disney film's overseas total up to $208.1 million after only two frames. Mexico is leading the overseas markets with a $30 million cume, double the lifetime gross of Oz: The Great and Powerful in the market. Other top performers for the film include Russia ($24.1M), UK ($18.8M), Brazil ($12.8M), and Italy ($12.2M).
Maleficent is Angelina Jolie's third highest grossing film of all time at the overseas box office, trailing only Mr. and Mrs. Smith ($292M) and The Tourist ($211M). It is on track to pass both those titles later in its run with upcoming releases scheduled for China (June 20) and Japan (July 4). Maleficnet has grossed a total of $335.47 million worldwide. It should pass both M&MS and Tourist.

I read it very quickly and somehow thought that $93m is OS so I was correcting myself.

Re: Maleficent (Int'l)
BO.com Quote: Maleficent conjured up another $37.2 million from 53 territories during its third weekend overseas. The Angelina Jolie film is now up to $272.9 million outside of North America and has grossed a strong $436.4 million globally. Top markets for the Disney film include a surprisingly robust $36 million from Mexico, $32.2 million from Russia, $22.7 million from the UK, and $18.6 million from Brazil. Maleficent expands to China next weekend. It still has China opening next weekend so I guess $350m OS should happen.

The movies die quickly in China so I don't think that should be a huge problem.

CATWS and XMDoFP didn't cross 100m each on its OW, not sure but I guess it took like 3 weeks to reach that goal
