 Re: Weekend Estimates
Yes they did, they just opened higher. And 300 when first announced didn't look like it would open to 30 million. Another case of Online hype taking away from a solid performance. Reminds me of Iron Man 3 and everyone calling it a disappointment despite the 2nd biggest weekend of all time, or Catching Fire's disappointing opening weekend?? Give me a break.
DOFP is at 610 WW. Anyone know what it made for the weekend internationally? It was at 344 before Friday, but not sure what it made during the dailies. One more week and every WW X-Men gross will be surpassed by it's OS total.

I feel like there's a chance The LEGO Movie actually takes it back, considering the length that most kids movies stay in the dollar theaters. That would have to be a first! A movie takes the #1 for a year on its 70th day of release, then loses it back to the movie it took it from.

By the time that would happen, I am pretty sure something else will be #1.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Apparently Maleficent is up almost $1m from estimates for Sunday.
Fault and Edge down $500k/$300k. DOFP, MWTD, Godzilla are up $300k.
Why must it be Maleficent? How disheartening. Lap it up fools, lap it up.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
That would be fantastic for Maleficent. Next weekend will be rough with HTTYD2 and Father's Day, but after that it should have clear sailing until at least Planes 2. It could end up having a 3.0 multiplier, which would be pretty impressive.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
I hope it really doesn't.
Maybe Jersey Boys can start getting good reviews...and appeal to women? Anything to slow it down.
Or 22JS/HTTYD2 just are amazing and become 4-quadrant hits so even when it is just stupid Transformers dominating those movies will be backup. Or Fault doesn't die. Or people actually go see Edge.
Maleficent needs to just exit ASAP.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Why would you want a movie to do badly? Much worse films have made far more money. Maleficent has a 76% audience rating which means most audiences think it is good. Would you rather both bad and good movies have terrible legs? The better things hold, the more fun they are to track.

Maleficent needs to just exit ASAP. Did Angelina Jolie run over your dog or something? How convenient. Did I ever mention anything about Angeline Jolie? No. In fact, just by the trailers I think she's done a superb job. That laugh and cackle looks especially delightful, yet I will not see the movie for other reasons, which I have indeed been talking about. So, good job on trying to put words into my mouth to fit your agenda.

I know Cinderella's on the table. (insert sexual joke here) You all are having some fun with my words. I've been saying how I want Edge to do well and that by all accounts is a great movie, 90% critical approval, 92% audience approval. Oh wait, why don't you read my post again? Maybe you can't deduce, but what I want is for all movies mentioned to do well so it hurts the average film which is Maleficent. Or haven't you noticed? HTTYD2-100%, 22JS-98%, EOT-90% (92%), TFIOS-82% (93%). Maleficent has a 51% critical score and before you say critics aren't everything, both Alice and Oz did not have the now rotten audience scores when they were first released, but they were found out, as should be the case, because they both sucked. What's the common denominator? Disney's policy of making these films. But that will never change when we have people like yourself defending them and lapping it all up, if that's what you're doing.

It's like Nazi Germany around here! The more I see Emily Blunt's muscular yoga, the more I feel like agreeing with the schoolboy fantasies of the rest of WOKJ. She really is beginning to strike me as hot. The more often we hear "Emily Blunt is hot" or "Jennifer Lawrence isn't fat", the more we start to believe it. And what better than for this to be instigated by a German, a Russian-German no less

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Quote: A24‘s Obvious Child opened to solid numbers in a crowded weekend some other distributors likely would rather forget. The abortion comedy, based on a 2009 short by filmmaker Gillian Robespierre, bowed with $81K in three theaters in NYC and LA for a robust $27K per-theater average. A24, which has had a nice winning streak of recent openers including Under The Skin (which opened in April with a $35K PTA in four theaters), was pleased with Obvious Child‘s results when reporting numbers Sunday:
“Sundance hit Obvious Child opened with the highest per screen (average) in the country this weekend and is now poised to become one of the breakout hits of summer. The hilarious and crowd-pleasing romantic comedy, featuring a star-making performance by actress/comedian Jenny Slate, received overwhelmingly positive reviews (over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and incredible word-of-mouth, including continual love throughout social media. The ‘revolutionary’ film that MTV called “your next obsession” saw sell-out shows on both Friday and Saturday.” A24 will expand the film to top markets over the next three weeks and go nationwide June 27. Hmm. A crowd-pleasing abortion comedy? Seems pretty risque. I wouldn't expect it to be able to expand well given the touchy subject but reviews are superb. Could probably do 4-5 Million.

BoxOffice has Fault at $48,002,523, so at least it stayed above 48. Phew!

I saw it at an advance screening a couple weeks ago. There aren't actually really any jokes at the expense of abortion, it's mostly just a very prominent plot point that tries to not draw attention to itself (although by doing so it's still noteworthy). I imagine (male) audiences will be more alienated by Slate's love of talking about farting and panty gunk than anything, but I think it'll be well-received by whatever audience finds the film, it's very sweet and and funny.

Maybe you should see it. I thought you hatred was based off how bad you thought it was. You can't just judge off of how a movie looks like other movies. I know several people who hated Alice and Oz and loved Maleficent.

I think a 27% drop for Fault is a solid number. Very similar to Sex and the City. The weekdays will be different though because of discount Tuesdays and SATC opening a week earlier. Monday's hold will be interesting though. SATC dropped about 57%.
