I assume $250 million is still happening, then.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Frozen exceeds $200
Weekend Estimates [05/31-06/01]

01 (01) ¥812 million ($8.0 million), +16%, ¥21.30 billion ($208.7 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 12

03 (--) ¥199 million ($1.9 million), 0, ¥235 million ($2.3 million), Monsterz (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
04 (--) ¥187 million ($1.8 million), 0, All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye (Toho) DEBUT

05 (02) ¥155 million ($1.5 million), -14%, ¥505 million ($5.0 million), A Bolt from the Blue (Toho) Week 2
06 (03) ¥135 million ($1.3 million), -09%, ¥4.10 billion ($40.2 million), Thermae Romae II (Toho) Week 6
07 (04) ¥73 million ($720,000), -28%, ¥2.97 billion ($29.1 million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) Week 6
08 (06) ¥51 million ($500,000), -37%, ¥525 million ($5.1 million), Ushijima the Loan Shark 2 (Toho) Week 3
09 (05) ¥50 million ($490,000), -41%, ¥3.92 billion ($38.4 million), Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) Week 7
10 (08) ¥46 million ($450,000), -17%, ¥1.68 billion ($16.4 million), Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes (Toho) Week 7
11 (07) ¥43 million ($420,000), -34%, ¥390 million ($3.8 million), Mobile Suit Gundam UC: Episode 7 - Over the Rainbow (Shochiku) Week 3
12 (09) ¥37 million ($360,000), -30%, ¥530 million ($5.2 million), Wood Job! (Toho) Week 4
13 (10) ¥31 million ($300,000), -39%, ¥2.01 billion ($19.7 million), Partners the Movie 3 (Toei) Week 6

Note: This was a discount weekend (1st of the month) which can skew the estimates quite a bit. So these are rough estimates rather than estimate estimates.

>Frozen continues to be so uncanny and marvelous. To still be posting weekend numbers over ¥700/800 million ($7/8 million) is so unprecedented. Its 12th weekend estimates here is pretty much double the old 12th weekend record held by Spirited Away. Ever since its 7th weekend, it's been breaking the weekend record by considerable amounts.

Anyway, Frozen definitely exceeded ¥21 billion ($205 million) over the weekend, and should be closer to ¥21.3 billion ($209 million) now. It's also likely to be over 16.7 million admissions now, so it's about 100-150,000 away (400-450,000 if you count the 3D re-release) from overtaking Titanic as the most-attended imported film of all-time.

Given it's unprecedented run, it's not really possible to give a projected total, but it's certainly giving it's all to reach ¥30 billion ($300 million) and thus Spirited Away. At the very least, ¥27/28 billion ($270/280 million) is likely.

And non-Frozen related...

>X-Men: Days of Future Past debuted very, very well. It did open on a discount weekend, though, and films that open on these weekends end up pretty frontloaded. The film should be able to come near ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), however, putting it range of X-3's ¥1.53 billion total. This is far better than it was expected to earn. It's still very unlikely to exceed the totals for X-Men (¥1.85 billion) or X2 (¥1.80 billion), but quite impressive nonetheless as it'll almost double the totals of the Wolverine films and X-Men: First Class[/b]

>Good showing for Monsterz. Few were expecting it to beat All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye, and based on estimates, it did just that with about a ¥200 million ($2 million) debut. Very nice.

With Frozen now above ¥20 billion, Titanic's actual week 12 total may be revealed in one of tomorrow's news articles. If not then, perhaps on Tuesday/Wednesday when Frozen overtakes it in admissions to become the #1 all-time most attended imported release.

I guess it denotes and does not detonate an estimate, otherwise the estimate would blow up and be gone ;)

That is impossible. We have sunday ticket sales numbers and its definitely not going to be that low. In fact sunday alone will be close to that number. I would wait for actuals that will release on monday.

5th July.

Yes.

Snow White and the Huntsman made $21m and Salt made $23m. Combining Jolie and Disney fantasy could mean good stuff.

By the way, Spirited away will stay in the history of cinema, not Frozen, and that's all that matters to me. Viva anime!

If those numbers posted on BO.com forum are true actuals then Frozen made around 7.4-7.5 milion $ this weekend.

Estimates were a little high, and Disney was very low. :P

I'll post the weekend ranking soon.

Weekend Ranking [05/31-06/01]

01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 12
02 (--) X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) DEBUT
03 (--) Monsterz (Warner Bros.) DEBUT

04 (02) A Bolt from the Sky (Toho) Week 2
05 (--) All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye (Toho) DEBUT
06 (03) Thermae Romae II (Toho) Week 6
07 (04) The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) Week 6
08 (05) Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) Week 7
09 (06) Ushijima the Loan Shark 2 (Toho) Week 3
10 (08) Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes (Toho) Week 7

>Frozen achieves its 12th-consecutive week atop the box-office, the third most of any film since 1998 trailing just Spirited Away (16 weeks) and Armageddon (14 weeks).

Over the weekend, the film saw an increase of 8% to earn ¥759,421,150 ($7.5 million) with 648,239 admissions. The weekend increase in admissions was a huge 26%, but Sunday was a discount day which was extremely popular this weekend, being about 15% stronger than some past 1st of the month discount days. This is due to, I believe, the April tax hike that increase movie tickets which is making discount days even more popular than they were in the past. This past weekend was just the first time since then that the 1st has fallen on a weekend.

Anyway, Frozen has grossed ¥21.23 billion ($208.1 million) with 16.73 million admissions after 80 days in release. It's the third highest-grossing film of all-time now, but a bigger achievement is going to happen any day now - Overtaking Titanic's 16.83 million admissions to become the #1 most-attended imported release of all-time!

>X-Men: Days of Future Past is also down from estimates due to the incredibly popular Sunday. Playing on 648 screens, the film made ¥272,477,680 ($2.7 million) with 207,475 admissions over the weekend, and ¥352.8 million ($3.4 million) after 3-days. This opening is 47% stronger than the last Wolverine film, and the best opening in the franchise since X-3. I have a feeling that with Sunday being so popular this weekend that the openers will have some frontloadeding as a result, but it should have no problem clearing ¥1 billion ($10 million) with ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($12/13 million). That may not seem like much, but it's almost double First Class by comparison.

>Monsterz surprised over the weekend taking in ¥194,411,950 ($1.9 million) with 162,522 admissions on 327 screens. Warner Bros. has been having solid success since focusing their efforts in Japan on domestic films, and this is another example. The film should find its way to ¥1 billion ($10 million).

>All-Around Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa's Eye got off to a very disappointing start. Despite the books being very popular with over 3 million copies sold, the film only earned ¥140,189,800 ($1.3 million) with 119,558 admissions on 300 screens. This is definitely a bust for Toho since it'll likely struggle to ¥700 million ($7 million). Reminder: ¥1 billion is the general mark to hit to break even and considered a commercial success in Japan.

So I guess Frozen will match Armageddon with 14 weeks at #1?

I just can't see it staying there for another 3 weeks. Two maybe, but three is a push.
