 Re: Weekend Estimates
I can understand reservations with Dragon, because of how Kung Fu Panda went. But WOM was much, much stronger for Dragon 1 compared to Panda 1, to the point that I think the sequel appeals to adults in the same way a Pixar film does. The flixster score reflects that.
Considering it's the first real animated event picture since Lego Movie, I can't see it opening less than Monsters U. It should do significantly better.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
A little surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but as long as it stays above $69.637 million, Maleficent will have the second biggest non-sequel, live-action opening for a film with a top-billed actress, behind only The Hunger Games. I know that's a lot of qualifiers, but it is pretty impressive. Actually, a list:
1. The Hunger Games - $152.5 million ($152.5 million) 2. Maleficent - $70 million 3. Twilight - $69.6 million ($192.8 million) 4. Sex and the City - $57 million ($152.6 million) 5. Snow White and the Huntsman - $56.2 million ($155.3 million) 6. Gravity - $55.8 million ($274.1 million) 7. Divergent - $54.6 million ($148.3 million*) 8. Scary Movie 3 - $48.1 million ($110 million) 9. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - $47.7 million ($131.2 million) 10. The Conjuring - $41.9 million ($137.4 million)
Looks like Fault in Our Stars should be a near-lock to make this list next weekend.

Don't most people consider Dragon one of the best animated films ever made?

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Every time a big animated movie comes out, I'm hoping it beats the two records held by the crappy Shrek sequels (OW and highest grossing animated movies). It's not my expectation that HTTYD2 will do it, but it is my hope. 80/340 is my current prediction though.
I love the first HTTYD movie. Definitely in my top 10 animated movies of all time. I hope this one can live up to it.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Maleficent's projected Sunday hold seems possible to me since female pics do well on the weekdays even this early in the summer. That means lower Sunday and Monday drops. That could move the typical Sunday hold for a 70m opener from the 30%-35% range to 20%-25%.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Dragon 2 will be lucky to make the same as the original. I don't see a huge opening. I think it's another case of KJ-optimism.
