The eleventh-hour emphasizing of the Doc Brown cameo definitely indicated desperation. The fact Christopher Lloyd shot a cameo for the film almost became a focal point.

I also grew weary of seeing certain gags again and again and again (such as the ice falling/"THAT WENT SOUTH SO FAST!"), but this might just be a personal objection.

I wonder if the film would have had more appeal of McFarlane's character himself was a time traveler. That was kind of the vibes I got from the initial trailers, with the dialogue McFarlane had, though I guess that's the "joke."

West is probably performing slightly better than I expected. Never looked like a big hit to me really.

Yeah I thought that was the joke as well.

To be fair, Blazing Saddles was filled with those kind of jokes ("That's Hedley!" "and for my next impression, Jesse Owens!" "I must've killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille") and no one gives that film much grievance for it.

Wow. AMWTD is doing terribly. I predicted a 28m OW and I thought that was being on the down side.

Good for Maleficent and X-Men. Fine for West as well given that the last few weeks it lost a lot of steam coupled with early bad reviews, though generally the bad reviews don't really impact comedies.

Boxoffice.com:

Maleficent - $23M Friday/ $69-73M weekend

A Million Ways to Die in the West - $6M Friday/ $15-17M weekend

DoFP - $40-42M weekend

As the night grows, lower estimates show.

From the same source as of about an hour ago, I think.

Maleficent - 8.89
DOFP - 2.93
A Million Ways - 1.69
Godzilla - 0.93

Reference Points:
Snow White and the Huntsman - 7.07
Oz: The Great and Powerful - 9.59
Fast & Furious 6 (2nd Friday) - 2.52

23m is not going to translate into 69-73

Fast 6 did very well on the West Coast though.

Magnus, for your game, do you only post the predictions after results are out?

I knew once I started playing, I'd probably lose. lol. Didn't think AMW could really bomb out this bad.

If it opens below $20m, it won't cross $40m.

kinda feel the focus should be on X-Men. If it does the median of that range, it would be 41m weekend, a sub-55% drop. That would ensure 250m+ total and give it a good chance of outgrossing CA2, which seemed very far fetched after its OD. I think that puts the franchise back in a very strong position going forward. Apocalypse can improve from this and the spinoff films, if the quality is there, can manage solid numbers.

It would also be the second-lowest 2nd weekend drop for the franchise ever, behind only X2 (-53.2%). I would've been happy with a 2nd weekend above $35 million, but above $40 million? Jeez.

Yes ofcourse with the night the estimates will come in line. Still a $40m weekend as the minimum is GREAT for X-Men. Million Ways is trying to find ways to die at BO :P

I'm having bad flashbacks to First Class' 2nd weekend, where the early numbers had it a "Mother Of God" $10M. The real number was $7.5M. I'm gonna try to find that thread.

Hopefully the numbers aren't as bad this time for X-Men.

Hmm pretty much all the early estimates have decreased drastically. Just like last week it looks like night business is going to be soft for most movies once again.

I do find it interesting how DOFP has really strong matinee business, but then completely falters by late night. Probably a testament to how it's skewing alot older than other superhero movies.

I know we didn't get a demographic breakdown report last week, but I didn't see a single teen in my audience when I saw it Saturday afternoon which surprised me a bit. A few families, adult couples, and people no younger than me or in their mid/late 20's.

That number wouldn't be fine at all :P. 19-20 Million though would be "fine." Anything below for this is pretty poor.

I hope the #'s keep going up and Maleficent hits 90 for the weekend like I predicted. 3 90 million openings in a row would be cool.

I'm hoping too. Would at least like to see it do 80+.

I imagine Maleficent will do well at night, with an older audience than the families during the daytime.

Yep... I wonder why X-Men does such great day business and mediocre night business.

Because adults would rather not watch a superhero flick? or if they do, they don't want to be embarrassed when they see their neighbours at the same showing so they go in the daytime?
