Rio 2 took a $9.9 million opening weekend from 2,478 screens in Russia. The strong debut is a positive sign for the animated sequel considering the start of school holidays in the country this week. The original Rio took a $9.3 million debut in the market and finished its theatrical run with a $24.8 million cume.

Rio 2 posted the biggest opening weekend of the year in Brazil and the biggest box office debut for an animated film of all time in the country after earning $7.3 million from 1,271 screens. The animated sequel slid down to second place in Russia with a $6.3 million hold from 2,478 screens, finishing its second weekend in the territory with a $21 million cume. Rio 2 expands to nine markets next weekend, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, and Taiwan.

Rio 2 collected a $22.2 million haul from 6,155 screens in 12 markets. The animated sequel opened in five new markets, including the UK and Germany, to bring its overseas total to $55.5 million ahead of its North American debut. Brazil was the leading market for Rio 2 with a $5.6 million haul, down only 28% from its opening weekend and finishing its second frame as the #2 film on the market. Rio 2 has a $15.3 million cume in Brazil. The UK opened to $4.6 million from 1,295 screens to finish in first place, an 86% improvement over the original. Germany took a $3.9 million first place bow from 1,026 screens. Spain had a solid $2.4 million opening to finish third in the market. Russia posted a $2.3 million hold in its third frame to take its cume up to $24.5 million

Rio 2 leads the weekend as it expands to 54 new markets and lifts its overseas total up to $125.2 million. A $12.1 million debut in China points to big overseas numbers for the animated sequel.

Rio 2 collected $62.3 million from 19,394 screens in 62 markets, a result of its expansion to 54 new markets this weekend. The animated sequel has now grossed a total of $125.2 million overseas.

A $12.1 million opening from 5,850 screens in China marked a 150% improvement over the original film, proving the sequel's potential in what could have been a potentially difficult market. Mexico scored an $8.7 million debut from 2,390 screens, making it the third highest Fox animation opening of all time in the market. France took a $4.6 million opening from 1,257 screens, a 20% boost above the original's premiere. UK enjoyed a $2.9 million hold from 1,100 screens, a 20% slide from last weekend's opening tally, to reach an $11.5 million cume in the market . Brazil continued to excel with a $2.2 million hold from 914 screens in its third weekend to reach an $18.9 million total in director Carlos Saldanha's home country.

Rio 2 recorded the second highest industry opening of all time for an animated film in India, only trailing Ice Age 4. The animated sequel opened in 466 screens to earn a $932k tally in its Indian debut, becoming the top ranked MPA title of the weekend. The sequel's strong opening weekend ranks 112% higher than that of the original.

Rio 2 also recorded strong debuts from Colombia ($2.2M / 380 Screens), Argentina ($2M / 380 Sceens), Philippines ($1.5M / 200 Screens), Peru ($1.4M / 229 Screens), Central America ($1.4M / 207 Screens), and Chile ($1.3M / 145 Screens). The film expands to 7 new markets next weekend.

Rio 2 leads another weekend at the overseas box office with a $48 million take from 65 markets. The animated sequel is now up to $276.8 million worldwide.

The animated film performed exceptionally well in China, where a $7.5 million hold boosted its running total in the market up to $23 million. Mexico also put up a strong hold with a #2 finish from a $4.3 million finish across 2,000 screens, taking its local cume up to $18.2 million.

Other top performers for Rio 2 include France ($3.8M Weekend / $9.5M Cume), Brazil ($2.5M Weekend, $22.6M Cume), and a $2.4 million opening weekend in Italy.

Rio 2 took a $24.5 million weekend from 8,869 screens in 89 overseas markets. The animated sequel’s overseas total is now up to $289.1 million. The film should cross the $400 million global mark by next weekend after finishing its latest frame with $395.6 million worldwide.

I am thinking $460m right now which is good but the budget was much bigger this time.
