Post Rio 2 (INTL)
The last one did great in OS markets so I thought this one deserved it own thread.

It opened with $9.9m in Russia this weekend, the original opened with $9.3m

Rio 2 took a $9.9 million opening weekend from 2,478 screens in Russia. The strong debut is a positive sign for the animated sequel considering the start of school holidays in the country this week. The original Rio took a $9.3 million debut in the market and finished its theatrical run with a $24.8 million cume.

The first 12 markets have already generated $55.5m and it should be close to $150m on the weekend it releases in states. I think $350m OS is a given and $500m WW should happen. Last one did $484m so this one should atleast increase is WW total, it most likely won't increase domestically.

Rio 2 leads the weekend as it expands to 54 new markets and lifts its overseas total up to $125.2 million. A $12.1 million debut in China points to big overseas numbers for the animated sequel.

Rio 2 collected $62.3 million from 19,394 screens in 62 markets, a result of its expansion to 54 new markets this weekend. The animated sequel has now grossed a total of $125.2 million overseas.

A $12.1 million opening from 5,850 screens in China marked a 150% improvement over the original film, proving the sequel's potential in what could have been a potentially difficult market. Mexico scored an $8.7 million debut from 2,390 screens, making it the third highest Fox animation opening of all time in the market. France took a $4.6 million opening from 1,257 screens, a 20% boost above the original's premiere. UK enjoyed a $2.9 million hold from 1,100 screens, a 20% slide from last weekend's opening tally, to reach an $11.5 million cume in the market . Brazil continued to excel with a $2.2 million hold from 914 screens in its third weekend to reach an $18.9 million total in director Carlos Saldanha's home country.

Rio 2 recorded the second highest industry opening of all time for an animated film in India, only trailing Ice Age 4. The animated sequel opened in 466 screens to earn a $932k tally in its Indian debut, becoming the top ranked MPA title of the weekend. The sequel's strong opening weekend ranks 112% higher than that of the original.

Rio 2 also recorded strong debuts from Colombia ($2.2M / 380 Screens), Argentina ($2M / 380 Sceens), Philippines ($1.5M / 200 Screens), Peru ($1.4M / 229 Screens), Central America ($1.4M / 207 Screens), and Chile ($1.3M / 145 Screens). The film expands to 7 new markets next weekend.

BOM has the OS total at $124.3m for $163.3m WW. With BO's numbers its WW total would be $164.2m.

Will it beat the first one in BO total?

So good Fox is not finding an ice age franchise here, it is not expanding!...... I guess :D

It will be difficult for it to get past $484m total of the first movie but it should manage another $100m WW total for sure definitely not as profitable as the first one but still good.

Ice Age were already in another league compared to Rio IMO. The last three of those are just uncomparable. The sequel to Croods will be interesting to track if they can get big enough, I never thought this movie will see a giant increase in OS.

In face of TASM2 that is a very good hold for Rio 2. $450m should happen for it.

It most likely will end close but lower to the original's $484m. I am thinking $460m right now which is good but the budget was much bigger this time.

Just 13m more than the first one, not a great deal at all

It will probably get to $125 million domestically. With the current markets it will get to $340 million overseas. It also still has Australia and Japan ahead, which sould deliver at least $15 million (the first Rio made $17 million in Australia alone). That gives it $482 million worldwide. I think $480 million is the absolute minimum. It could get to $490 million, though.

Still kind of crap for a more expensive sequel to only make a few million more than its predecessor.

I don't know why imdb has Rio 2 being released on May 28th (a Wednesday) in Japan.

It's not on the release schedule at all, so I doubt it even gets released. The last Blue Sky film to be released was Ice Age 3 in 2009.

So it will definitely end up lower than the last but VERY VERY close. Only if the movie was any good it could have seen a $500m-$550m WW total.

Wasn't that kinda locked before itself? Though Fox now has a deal with Dreamworks so that might be a LOT of animation movies for them to handle. Regardless I think they will make another one which was clear from the day this one opened in OS markets.
