I've been thrilled to see this since it was announced at Cannes a few years back. I grew up reading the "Ragg" Series of books by Robert Wolfe. Their combination of pulpy dialogue, explosive action, loose women and Memphis City Council intrigue had me riveted from page one.
Cage is a little older than I would have expected. He's also taller and not Laotian. Still, I think he'll nail the tone.
My understanding is that this is an adaptation of 1973's "On the Ragg" (Wolfe's debut novel) and 1986's "John Ragg: Guardian of Tampa". I picked up one of the newer novels at an airport bookstore a few years back and it wasn't bad at all, despite being ghostwritten by Wolfe's nephew (the author died in 1993).
