Also, Algren is REALLY upset about being compared to Brandon Gray.

I don't know, I think Subers is worse.

Re: Transcendence: Which other wannabe blockbusters were DOA
After seeing Hercules' second trailer, it pretty much has to join this club.
Maybe it won't get elite status like Transcendence, but honorary membership like 47 Ronin.
I'm still amazed that we can watch the trailer and know it's going to tank (47 Ronin, Hercules: TLB, Mortal Instruments etc) and yet they get greenlit and have massive budgets.
Going through 2013 1) Hansel & Gretel: This one actually outdid expectations, incredible really considering how crappy it looked. 2) A Good Day to Die Hard: I actually was looking forward to seeing it until awful reviews came, it disappointed majorly but not enough and its budget wasn't great enough to really be considered. 3) Jack the Giant Slayer: This is textbook for big budget bomb right from the start. It opened decently, or rather in the ballpark just above Transcendence/RIPD for the John Carter type run (opening between $25-35m and expected mediocre legs to follow) 4) After Earth: Another massive bomb, but it didn't really look like one. It had some sort of hook, but being bad obviously killed it. 5) Lone Ranger: I think Disney makes the list quite a bit. Just massively overbudgeted family crap. Never looked like it would cross $100m, still I think $89m is a lot better than it could have done. 6) Turbo: This is a different kind of flick but I'm not sure why Dreamworks thought it was such a good idea. Racing snails? At least Guardians and Peabody had something else going for them and looked like they could do well. Turbo never did. 7) Mortal Instruments: City of Ember, The Dark Is Rising, there are a lot of failed young adult wannabe franchises that are cut from exactly the same cloth. Poor special effects, generic story, obviously low production values despite the budget. 8) 47 Ronin: I forgot how bad it actually did. Here I thought it made at least $50m but it ended with $38m on a $225m budget. Then again, its fate was written in stone the moment it was announced.
Taking off A Good Day to Die Hard, After Earth and Turbo, 4/5 of these flicks went under expectations.
2014 1) Legend of Hercules: Just a major misfire. Always looked second rate. 2) I, Frankenstein: Similar to Hercules, though both budgets are relatively "smaller" compared to the monstrosities we are looking for. 3) Transcendence: I didn't see it bombing $10m bad but as it grew closer and closer to release date, as outlined in the OP, this was a trainwreck arriving at the station. 4) Hercules: Keeps getting worse. I don't know if it can make $25m OW anymore at this rate. 5) TMNT: This looks like a bomb too but more in the vein of John Carter/Lone Ranger. It's bad but people might still watch it unlike Hercules.

Wait Turbo was supposed to be a blockbuster? I thought that was made primarily for international audience.

Hercules will do fine. It is the only major action movie opening in july aside from apes. TMNT will clear 40 million opening and 100 million close with ease.

zwackerm has a point. I mean, if Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans can do fine, then Hercules should also be able to do fine. They all look(ed) shit, and they did well.

Audiences already got one subpar version of Hercules this year. Sure this new Hercules has The Rock who has more appeal than that dude from Twilight, but I doubt people are willing to pay again to see another mediocre Hercules movie. This could be another Conan on the BO.
