Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Challenges Frozen
Weekend Estimates [04/19-20]
01 (01) ¥862 million ($8.4 million), +03%, Frozen (Disney) Week 6 02 (--) ¥809 million ($7.9 million), 0, Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) NEW 03 (--) ¥302 million ($2.9 million), 0, Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back (Toho) NEW 04 (--) ¥204 million ($2.0 million), 0, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Disney) NEW 05 (02) ¥162 million ($1.5 million), -45%, Crows: Expode (Toho) Week 2 06 (03) ¥65 million ($630,000), -35%, Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai (Toei) Week 4 07 (05) ¥65 million ($630,000), -25%, The Snow White Murder Case (Shochiku) Week 4 08 (04) ¥64 million ($620,000), -34%, Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exportation Party (Toho) Week 7 09 (06) ¥60 million ($580,000), -18%, L-DK (Toei) Week 2 10 (07) ¥40 million ($380,000), -40%, Team Batista: Kerberos's Final Portrait (Toho) Week 4 11 (10) ¥27 million ($260,000), -27%, God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) Week 5 12 (08) ¥25 million ($240,000), -45%, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) Week 5 13 (09) ¥20 million ($190,000), -46%, One Third (Kadokawa) Week 3 14 (11) ¥18 million ($170,000), -45%, Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 6
>Frozen looks like it'll see another increase this weekend and claim a sixth-consecutive week on top. It should have exceeded the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone on Saturday, making it the 7th-fastest film to reach the incredible achievement. Oddly enough, the milestone wasn't reported over the weekend, though. After 6-week, its total should be at a staggering ¥10.5/¥10.6 billion ($103/104 million).
With figures so big, though, and estimates not being as accurate since the tax hike, the race at the top is still very close. In admissions, it's even closer with Frozen at 646,000 and Detective Conan at 641,000 based on estimates. And the Toho Admissions for Conan suggest it may go above 660,000, too.
Estimates were however 4.7% low on Detective Conan last April, and they were also low on Frozen last week. So we'll just have to wait until tomorrow unless one of them would sweep the various cinema chain rankings that come before weekend figures do later tonight giving us a better idea. Conan won at Toho Cinemas, but it'll also need a win at Aeon Cinemas, too, if it wants to dethrone Elsa.
>Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension reaches new heights in the franchise. The 18th-installment looks set to beat the opening weekend record in the franchise by perhaps 20% or better based on estimates, and should have no problem becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise either as it should exceed ¥4 billion ($40 million) with this level of debut.
>Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back reaped the benefits of having a big weekend battle for 1st, as it, too, looks like it set a franchise record. This is the 22nd-installment in the franchise, so breaking so far away from the typical opening is incredible. It usually opens around ¥200 million every year.
>Captain America: The Winter Soldier beat Thor: The Dark World by 9% according to estimates. If it holds, that's an okay number, but Iron Man 3 aside, The Avenger's effect isn't showing as much success here as in most other markets.

If Frozen only had weekday support, it would probably be tracking ahead of Howl's Moving Castle (though Howl hasn't reached New Year yet where it added almost ¥3 billion to its total), and probably be running even with Ponyo, Harry Potter 2 and Bayside Shakedown 2.
Regardless, Frozen is having a monstrous run and could potentially become the biggest film this decade. It's likely going to exceed ¥15 billion ($150 million), could reach ¥16/17 billion ($160/170 million), and that'll be very difficult for anything currently on the horizon to beat.

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Challenges Frozen
Golden Week is coming up (April 29-May 06), and with it comes:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (April 25) Thermae Romae II (April 26) Partners the Movie 3 (April 26)
The biggest issue is screens and showtimes. Frozen and Detective Conan are going into the week coming off massive weekends, so screen and showtime distribution will be intense.
This upcoming weekend is very likely to be the biggest of the year, and so long as none of the openers disappoint and can meet or exceed expectations, this weekend could be the biggest of all-time, too.
>Frozen will probably do over ¥700 million and is the most-likely to place 1st, though being in its 7th week, it may be subject to some harsh screen/showtimes cuts this time (especially if it ranked 2nd this weekend behind Conan). It also has the sing-a-long version being released in select theaters this weekend. I doubt it adds that much, but it's worth noting considering the popularity of the songs.
>If the estimate for Detective Conan is mostly accurate, then its second weekend could stay above ¥500 million which is nearly as big as the opening weekends of many past films in the franchise.
Openers,
>The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will open over ¥500 million, maybe ¥600 million+, but the dismal legs of the first film worry me and I think there's little room for improvement. The first film ended up earning less than half of any of the previous Spider-Man films with ¥3.16 billion ($39 million). Biggest threat to Frozen? Screen/Showtime loses.
>Thermae Romae II is a wild card. It's either going to be huge, or a disappointment. The first film opened over ¥400 million and went on to finish with almost ¥6 billion ($75 million) delivering incredible legs during May/June (two of the weakest months). It was a major success. But sequels lately haven't been faring too well, despite their predecessor's critical or box-office success. It is expected to open north of ¥500 million, however. Biggest threat to Frozen? Female audiences.
>Partners the Movie 3 should be the weakest of the bunch, but could still open over ¥300 or ¥400 million. The last film opened over a 5-day frame, so it's hard to determine what its weekend could have been. Biggest threat to Frozen? Any senior audiences.
I'm thinking for now...
¥650-750 million ($6.5-7.5 million) - Frozen ¥550-650 million ($5.5-6.5 million) - The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ¥500-600 million ($5.0-6.0 million) - Thermae Romae II ¥475-525 million ($4.7-5.2 million) - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension ¥300-350 million ($3.0-3.5 million) - Partners the Movie 3

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Challenges Frozen
A little less than estimates, but still massive obviously. And the total is a bit higher than expected.
So the race for #1 this weekend between it and Detective Conan is still undecided. What I think will happen in the morning is that Conan will win the weekend in admissions, and Frozen will win in gross. Conan did win the weekend at Aeon Cinemas, too, which narrowly overtook Toho Cinemas as the nation's largest chain last year.

Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest Charts

So it's the most attended non-Japanese animated film ever, after only 6 weeks of release?

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Challenges Frozen
Yep. It overtook Finding Nemo in admissions over the weekend. And it'll also overtake Finding Nemo in gross in a few days (Wednesday/Thursday) to become the highest-grossing non-Japanese animated film, too.
And we have split winners from this weekend as I suspected last night.
Detective Conan won the weekend in admissions; Frozen won the weekend in gross. Japanese sites report weekly rankings by admissions, so Frozen was finally dethroned on them. Any other source will have Frozen on top, and I usually go by gross when determining rankings, too.
>Detective Conan earned ¥789,332,300 ($7.8 million) with 649,865 admissions on 341 screens. This is the best opening of the year, the biggest since The Wind Rises last Summer, and also bests the previous record in the franchise by 18%.
>Frozen earned ¥826,781,000 ($8.1 million) with 628,314 admissions on 602 screens, down only 1.8% compared to last weekend. This is the third biggest sixth weekend since at least 2001, and is still 8% bigger than Frozen's own opening weekend last month.

I assume SA has the biggest 6th weekend. What would be #2?

Any chance a One Piece film or Evangelion will challenge the OW record in the future??

I posted the Biggest 6th Weekends in a post above. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone actually has the biggest, with Spirited Away in 2nd, and Frozen in 3rd.

They're probably the only things left that could manage it in the near future, though I honestly don't think Howl's Moving Castle will fall. Although, technically, in admissions, One Piece Film Z has the biggest opening weekend for an animated film but is 2nd behind Howl in gross. So any future One Piece film is a candidate.
>The final Evangelion film, still to be announced properly, might do it especially now that tickets have increased for the first time in 21 years. But the third film wasn't as well received as the first two, so that may hinder the opening.
>Finding Dory has potential, but it would require a rather huge increase over the original. And no imported-animated film has ever opened above ¥1 billion, so...
>Other than those... it's a long shot, but a future film by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. He is now considered Miyazaki's successor by Studio Ghibli, and his debut film, Arrietty, opened nearly as much as a Miyazaki film and is the most successful non-Miyazaki film, too. His next film, Memories of Marnie, is being released this July. It is of course a long shot at opening to the required ¥1.49 billion (that's a 66% increase over Arrietty's opening).
>Or perhaps a future project by Mamoru Hosoda. His films keep getting bigger and bigger, have received very high praise, winning many awards including Best Animated Feature at Japan's Academy Prize for his past three films. Nothing has been announced by him, but he should have a film planned for next year. It's a shame he and Studio Ghibli had creative differences in the early 2000's (he was originally attached to Howl's Moving Castle and considered a Miyazaki successor).

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [04/19-20]
Weekend Ranking [04/19-20]
01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 6 02 (--) Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) DEBUT 03 (--) Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back (Toho) DEBUT 04 (--) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Disney) DEBUT 05 (02) Crows: Explode (Toho) Week 2 06 (06) L-DK (Toei) Week 2 07 (03) Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai (Toei) Week 4 08 (04) Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 7 09 (05) The Snow White Murder Case (Shochiku) Week 4 10 (07) Team Batista: Kerberos's Final Portrait (Toho) Week 4
It's rare, but we saw spit winners (gross/admissions) in one of the closest, and biggest, races at the top in a very long time.
>Frozen claimed its 6th-consecutive week on top in gross, dipping -1.8% to ¥826,781,000 ($8.1 million) with 628,314 admissions. Its 38-day total has reached ¥10,727,641,000 ($104.8 million) with 8,679,211 admissions.
As noted, this is the third biggest sixth-weekend, and Frozen becomes the 28th film to reach the ¥10 billion milestone at the box-office, as well as the seventh-fastest to reach the mark. At this pace, it'll crack the Top 10 All-Time in early May and will likely exceed a gross of ¥15 billion ($150 million) in the process.
>Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension won the weekend in admissions, but falls a bit short in gross. The 18th-installment in the popular franchise earned ¥789,332,300 ($7.8 million) with 649,865 admissions on 341 screens. It earned itself the biggest opening weekend of the year, and the biggest since The Wind Rises last July. It also easily bested the franchise opening weekend record by a very impressive 18%.
It should have little problem becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise, and may reach a total of ¥4 billion ($40 million).
>Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back, while debuting in a distant third to the huge weekends of Frozen and Conan, also posted very impressive numbers (no doubt benefiting from their sellouts). The 22nd-installments earned ¥338,930,200 ($3.2 million) with 294,599 admissions on 329 screens. This is 50% greater than last year's film, and also sets a franchise record on opening weekend by 24%!
Generally Crayon Shin-chan only manages a little more than ¥1 billion ($10 million) every year, but it'll most likely reach ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) or a bit more this year.
>Captain America: The Winter Soldier had to settle for a fourth-place debut. The latest Marvel released grossed ¥198,360,800 ($1.9 million) with 142,236 admissions on 488 screens. This is... decent, slightly better than Thor: The Dark World, but it's probably not enough to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.
Next weekend will be one of the more interesting weekends in years. It has potential to become the biggest weekend ever if all goes well. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Thermae Romae II, and Partners the Movie 3 will open in time for Golden Week, and holdovers Frozen and Detective Conan will still be doing big numbers.
So far it looks like theaters are giving Thermae Romae II the bigger screens, but bigger screens don't always matter.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [04/19-20]
A Disney movie outgrossing the latest Miyazaki movie (and his final one, no less) is pretty incredible. Its WW gross is now going to be frustratingly close to IM3's, although it looks like it'll finish #8 on the all time overseas chart, passing Transformers 3 and ROTK.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking [04/19-20]
The Wind Rises performed extraordinarily well for having no appeal to neither children or families, and being the most adult film by the studio since Grave of the Fireflies (which disappointed upon release). Besides that fact, there was a lot of concern regarding its actual historic material. Though it became the highest-grossing non-fantasy film after Titanic, The Last Samurai, and Bayside Shakedown 2.
It has an interesting history, too, and developed into a film pretty abruptly actually. Originally, it was a manga that was published in 2009 by Miyazaki. At the time, he had no plans on adapting it into a film, and was actually going to make a sequel to Ponyo, which was released the year before. It would have been the studio's first sequel.
Over the years he began to see that children really enjoyed his work, such as My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service (they've been on the Top 100 VHS/DVD sales charts for over 10 years), so he decided to go back to making a film for those young fans to enjoy which eventually became Ponyo. He then had his first grandchild in 2009 or 2010 I believe, so he wanted to create another film (Ponyo 2) for his grandchildren and others' children to enjoy once again, but was talked out of it by close friend and Studio Ghibli producer, Toshio Suzuki, who suggested he adapt his manga as his final film instead.
The Oscars actually have the video here (01:23:00):
Studio Ghibli has never produced a sequel in their 30 year inception (20 original films later), though there have been old rumors of a sequel to Porco Rosso or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (a manga series by Miyazaki), but they never materialized. So if they ever make a sequel, it'll be interesting to see how it'll be received by audiences.

Corpse its tuesday admissions are above last week at Toho. Also at BO.com its reported that its losing just 11% of its seats at Toho this saturday. Do you think 200M will happen if it continues to hold well this week and then enjoy good boost over GW.
