Jack Sparrow wrote: So Frozen should overtake Eternal Zero at this pace right ? At its current pace, yes, but it won't be able to keep these numbers up after the first week of April, and the first couple weeks in April will decide where it's really heading. I'd give it the strong likelihood of beating The Eternal Zero, though, which looks to finish with ~¥8.7/8.8 billion ($85/86 million). It's pretty funny. Before it became clear that The Eternal Zero was in for a such a stellar performance, 2014 wasn't looking very strong at all. Hollywood in particular just has some sequels like Spider-Man or Transformers that were likely to make ¥3/4 billion ($30/40 million) at most. But now with The Eternal Zero already over ¥8.5 billion ($83 million), and Frozen practically locked for ¥8 billion ($80 million) and likely ¥9 billion ($90 million) or more, too, the entire year has turned around thanks to these two major breakouts. The Eternal Zero supported the New Year (Dec. to Mar.), Frozen is supporting the Spring (Mar. to May), so now Memories of Marnie just needs to support the Summer/Obon (July to Sept.), and 2014 is in excellent shape as long as most other films perform as expected. Thermae Romae II is also a wild card. It opens on Apr. 26th, and the original grossed ¥5.98 billion ($76 million) in 2012. Hopefully it can provide some support for the generally weak months of May and June like its predecessor. But in recent years, sequels haven't been performing nearly as well as they once did in the past. With the exception of 2011/2012, the past 6/7 years have seen non-sequels topping the box-office more often. Top 5 Grossing Films From Each Year (2008-)2013: The Wind Rises (original) > Monsters University > One Piece Film Z > Les Miserables (original) > Ted (original). 2012: Umizaru 4 > Thermae Romae (original) > Bayside Shakedown 4 > Mission Impossible 4 > Evangelion 3.0 2011: Harry Potter 7.2 > Pirates 4 > From Up on Poppy Hill (original) > Pokemon 14 > A Ghost of a Chance (original) 2010: Avatar (original) > Alice in Wonderland (original) > Toy Story 3 > Arrietty (original) > Umizaru 3 2009: Rookies (original) > Harry Potter 6 > Departures (original) > Red Cliff 2 > This Is It (original) 2008: Ponyo (original) > Boys Over Flowers (original) > Indiana Jones 4 > Red Cliff (original) > Suspect X (original) Exactly 50% (15 out of 30) of the Top 5 films since 2008 have been original or non-sequles and 67% (4 out of 6) of those have topped their year, which is a big improvement over the early/mid 2000s.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Queen Elsa of Japan)
Non-Sequels vs. Sequels (2008-) Top 10 Films of Each Year:
2013: ¥31.92 billion ($336.4 million) [57.7%] - Non-Sequels (6/10) ¥23.44 billion ($248.7 million) [42.3%] - Sequels (4/10) 2012: ¥35.08 billion ($444.9 million) [72.8%] - Sequels (7/10) ¥13.81 billion ($176.2 million) [28.2%] - Non-Sequels (3/10) 2011: ¥37.31 billion ($482.9 million) [69.6%] - Sequels (6/10) ¥16.29 billion ($211.1 million) [30.4%] - Non-Sequels (4/10) 2010: ¥41.65 billion ($503.8 million) [51.1%] - Non-Sequels (4/10) ¥39.81 billion ($481.6 million) [48.9%] - Sequels (6/10) 2009: ¥27.99 billion ($309.4 million) [51.2%] - Non-Sequels (5/10) ¥26.63 billion ($294.3 million) [48.8%] - Sequels (5/10) 2008: ¥51.42 billion ($549.1 million) [83.0%] - Non-Sequels (8/10) ¥10.51 billion ($116.7 million) [17.0%] - Sequels (2/10)
Between 2000-2007, Non-Sequels beat Sequels 3/8 times in 2001, 2002 and 2006 among each year's Top 10. So far it's been the opposite since 2008.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Queen Elsa of Japan)
Starting Tuesday, April 1st, Japan's Domestic Consumption Tax Law goes into effect, increasing taxes from 5% to 8%. And sometime in October of 2015, it will increase again from 8% to 10%.
This is causing all movies tickets, including discount day ticket prices such as Ladies Day or the 1st of the Month, as well as Student/Senior ticket prices, to increase by ¥100 yen (~$1) or approx. 8% using the avg. ticket price since the early 1990's.
Ticket prices vary a bit from theater to theater, but most ticket prices will be increasing from:
General Ticket Prices: ¥1,800 -> ¥1,900 (+5.6%) - Adult Admission ¥1,500 -> ¥1,600 (+6.7%) - College Student Admission ¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - High School Student / Middle-Elementary Student Admission ¥300 -> ¥400 (+33.3%) - 3D Premium
Common Discount Prices: ¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - Senior Admission (60 or older) ¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - Ladies Day (Every Wednesday) ¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - First Day (First of Every Month)
Movie tickets have remained the same price in Japan since the early 1990's (around 1992), ever since the country began it's recession, so as expected the increase does have some mixed reactions from moviegoers before it even goes into effect.
Aeon Cinemas, which became the largest cinema chain in the country last year by acquiring Warner Mycal, is actually "combating" the price hike by allowing anyone 55 or older (vs 60 or older) to get the senior discount at their locations. They're also talking about beginning a new discount day at their locations called, "Happy Monday", where anyone can purchase a ticket for ¥1,100.
It'll be interesting to see how the tax hike will effect the box-office, if at all, next month. I imagine discount days, while they're increasing as well, will become even more popular than they already are for most moviegoers. And with 3D mostly on the way out (shares have dropped from 70/80% to 20/30% in just 2 years), I'd say this will be the final nail in the coffin for that format unless it's something really, really special.

Re: Japan Box Office: New Tax Law Going Into Effect April 1s
Corpse, can you explain how MPAA in the yearly report gave Japan 2nd place after China with $2.4 bln? All previous reports said $1.9 bln or even $1.8 bln.

I don't know exactly, but I'm sure it's due to the exchange rate. This is where exchange rates make things annoying. The exchange rate at the beginning of 2013 was around 85, but then jumped into the mid/high 90s from March until November where it has stabilized around 102 ever since. That's about a 20% change in only 9/10 months. The 2013 Japanese Box-Office was ¥194.24 billion yen. If they used an exchange rate from earlier in the year, they would get about $2.3 billion (close enough to their reported $2.4 billion). If they used a round average during the year, then it would be about $1.9/$2.0 billion, and finally, if they were to use the rate near the end of the year they'd get $1.8/1.9 billion. Depending on the time of year, that's a very significant $400/500 million difference. The most accurate should be about the average during the year, so $1.9/2.0 billion is what I'm using. But 2013 saw the biggest shift in the exchange rate since 1999 (16% change), so it's ultimately very difficult to get a real accurate USD figure.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (03/29-30)
Weekend Estimates [03/29-30]
01 (01) ¥854 million ($8.4 million), -02%, Frozen (Disney) Week 3 02 (02) ¥277 million ($2.7 million), +02%, Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 4 03 (--) ¥245 million ($2.4 million), 0, Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai (Toei) NEW 04 (--) ¥182 million ($1.7 million), 0, Team Batista: Final Kerberos's Portrat (Toho) NEW 05 (--) ¥159 million ($1.5 million), 0 The Snow White Murder Case (Shochiku) NEW 06 (03) ¥102 million ($1.0 million), -31%, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) Week 2 07 (04) ¥92 million ($900,000), -13%, Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 3 08 (05) ¥67 million ($650,000), -32%, God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) Week 2 09 (08) ¥39 million ($370,000), -21%, Silver Spoon (Toho) Week 4 10 (09) ¥31 million ($290,000), -34%, Saving Mr. Banks (Disney) Week 2
>Frozen continues its incredible run with one of the biggest third weekends ever. It exceeded ¥4.1 billion ($40 million) on Thursday, so it should now be over ¥5 billion with ¥5.1/¥5.2 billion (~$50/51 million) after 3 weeks, also one of the biggest three week totals ever.
It will begin to slow down starting this upcoming weekend, post-Spring Break, but it will already have accumulated a massive sum that ¥10 billion (~$100 million) is more than likely in reach.
>Doraemon looks like it's the only film to increase this weekend (though Frozen's estimate is close enough to an possible increase with actuals), but given its younger audience it's not much of a surprise. Many of the past films have already increase during this weekend. The latest film should be around ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) now after 4 weeks.
Good debuts for all three openers.
>The latest Kamen Rider film, this time a crossover featuring characters from both the 70s and 90s/00s, beat December's release by almost 10%, and is about even with last August's film, so it should be targeting a total of ¥1.2 billion (~$11/12 million). >The movie adaptation of the TV drama Team Batista sees a solid debut and will have no problem reaching ¥1 billion+ (~$10/11 million). > And The Snow White Murder Case is one of Shochiku's better openings in more recent months and should also find its way to ¥1 billion (~$10 million).

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Est. (Frozen Aiming For $100m+
Is there any information out there as to the attendance figures for the original Star Wars? I've never seen it (or The Empire Strikes Back, or Return of the Jedi) on any lists of most attended films. I'd think that at least the first one would rank high on the list - are the figures not known/not available for them?

I'd think that at least the first one would rank high on the list - are the figures not known/not available for them? Well, Star Wars earned ~¥3.20 billion (~$17 million) in 1978. No admissions figure is known, but using the avg. ticket price of 1978, it would be about 3.2/3.3 million admissions. The Empire Strikes Back earned ~¥4.95 billion (~$23 million) in 1980. No admissions figure is available again, but using the average ticket price that year it would have been 4.8/4.9 million admissions. Return of the Jedi grossed ~¥5.75 billion (~$24 million) in 1983, and using the avg. ticket price of that year its admissions would have been around 5.1/5.2 million admissions. Star Wars was certainly popular, but not as much as in the States and likely many other countries back then Its popularity grew overtime as you can see by each film's increase, and then exploded when the Episode I was released in 1999. mark66 wrote: Jurassic Park is listed twice (22 & 35)... Whoops. And I'm not missing anything either, so I'll edit it.

Weekend Ranking [03/29-30] 01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 3 02 (02) Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 4 03 (--) Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai (Toei) DEBUT 04 (--) The Snow White Murder Case (Shochiku) DEBUT 05 (--) Team Batista: Final Kerberos's Portrait (Toho) DEBUT06 (04) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 3 07 (03) The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) Week 2 08 (05) God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) Week 2 09 (06) Silver Spoon (Toho) Week 4 10 (09) Saving Mr Banks. (Disney) Week 2 >Frozen... I know it's not uncommon for films to sometimes increase the last weekend of March (Spring Break), Doraemon does it most years, but to do so after already seeing a second weekend increase (of 13%) after an already huge opening weekend is extraordinarily impressive.
The film rose 1% over last weekend, taking in ¥881,212,200 ($8.6 million) with 691,321 admissions over its third weekend. It's starting to pull significantly of every Disney/Pixar release (it's already the highest-grossing WDA release), even Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3, and as far as animated films go, it only trails Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo after 3 weeks.
Its three week total is an incredible ¥5,278,137,250 ($51.6 million) with 4,320,519 admissions.
Spring Break is still going on, so it's probably going to see another set of weekdays over ¥1 billion ($10 million+), but from there it really should start to slow down. But it'll be around ¥7 billion ($70 million) after four weeks in release anyway, so it'll have to almost collapse to miss ¥10 billion ($100 million), and will probably become the highest-grossing imported animated film of all-time (needs to beat Finding Nemo's ¥11 billion)... Crazy.
>The latest Kamen Rider film (a crossover featuring different eras from the franchise), opened with ¥263,158,580 ($2.6 million) and 222,265 admissions on 292 screens. This is 14.9% better than the opening of December's release, and 4.5% better than last August's film. The franchise has kinda begun to see smaller debuts over the past couple years, so this is a very nice improvement still showing this incredibly long running franchise (this is the 49th theatrical release) has a lot of steam left. This release should be able to gross ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($12/13 million).
>The Snow White Murder Case sees a nice debut for dis. Shochiku, bringing in ¥163,612,000 ($1.6 million) with 124,755 admissions on 305 screens. It should be able to crawl past the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.
>Team Batista: Kerberos's Final Portrait opens softer than estimates, earning ¥155,367,900 ($1.5 million) with 123,007 admissions on 282 screens. Decent opening, though it could have been a bit better. It'll also be able to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) mark.

Frozen will have little trouble entering the Top 10 and will end up challenging Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 at its current pace. It also has a small chance at The Wind Rises and breaking up Miyazaki's Top 5 if it doesn't fall too hard post-Spring Break, but ¥12 billion+ will be quite difficult.

That is quite the spectacular run Frozen is having. Any particular reason why this is doing so much better than any other WDA release over there?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Frozen Aims For $100m
It appears it is headed for another increase this week !!!. Monday and Tuesdays are up big time from last week which increased from previous weekdays !!!!!!!!!!!!!! May be it will be around 75M after this sunday. I think 100M is locked and may be it will be highest admissions all time for non-local animation.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Frozen Aims For $100m
It's still Spring Break remember, and Tuesday was a discount day (the 1st). It's not surprising that this week is ahead of last week so far, and it should be ahead of last week until Saturday. Everything is up over last week so far. Doraemon is up around 90% over last week so far this week for instance.

The success it saw overseas before it was released. It crossed $1 billion worldwide before it opened, won 2 Oscars, and in general has great reviews. It also helps to have a very popular song, reminiscent of key songs from hits like Titanic or Armageddon. A lot of films manage to breakout in Japan with late release dates if they become global smash hits first.
