Re: Japan Box Office: New Release Dates
Updated release schedule for the three biggest holiday frames of the year:
Golden Week 2014 (April 29th through May 6th) Apr. 12th - Crows: Explode (Toho) Apr. 12th - L-DK (Toei) Apr. 19th - The Light Shines Only There (Toei) Apr. 19th - Captain America: The Winter Solider (Disney) Apr. 19th - Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes Back (Toho) Apr. 19th - Detective Conan: Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) Apr. 25th - The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) Apr. 26th - Thermae Romae II (Toho) Apr. 26th - Partners the Movie 3 (Toei) May 01st - Labor Day (Paramount) May 02nd - Enchanted Kingdom 3D (Toho-Towa) May 03rd - My Little Nightmare: The Movie (Toho)
Summer Vacation/Obon Festival 2014 (July 19th through August 17th) July 04th - Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) July 05th - Divergent (Kadokawa) July 05th - Maleficent (Disney) July 12th - Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) July 19th - Memories of Marnie (Toho) *Studio Ghibli* July 19th - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) July 19th - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Disney) July 25th - Godzilla (Toho) July 26th - Eight Rangers 2 (Toho) Aug. 01st - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros) Aug. 08th - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Aug. 08th - Doraemon, Stand By Me (Toho) Aug. 09th - Space Brothers 0 (Warner Bros.)
New Year 2014 (December 23rd through January 4th) Dec. 12th - Interstellar (Warner Bros.) Late-Dec. - Parasyte: Part 1 (Toho) *Takashi Yamazaki* Dec. TBA - Vancouver's Asahi (Toho) Dec. TBA - The Movie: Aikatsu! (Toei) Dec. TBA - Big Eyes (Gaga) *Tim Burton*
Golden Week is shaping up to be bigger than the several past years. Summer/Obon is also looking great. New Year is still awhile away with few films still scheduled , but it's starting to see more releases.
Planes 2 was recently announced for July 19th... competition rarely matters in most cases, especially during holidays, but it's facing Studio Ghibli, Pokemon, and Doraemon (first time being released in the Summer, and the first CGI release). The first one barely exceeded ¥1 billion only a couple months back, and I'm expecting a significant drop-off for it.
In the majority of years, 7-8 films in the yearly Top 10 are released during these three holiday frames.

It looks like Frozen doubled its Tuesday admissions on Wednesday. While great, I assume it's about normal given the discounted tickets and for a film whose audience is 70% female (and 20/30% adult females, if I'm not mistaken). Corpse?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking Pg. 179 (Frozen breako
It's normal. Ladies Day is every Wednesday and is thus the strongest weekday. For films that skew heavily female (70, 80, 90%+), Wednesdays can sometimes be bigger than Saturday or Sunday, too.
I visited the box-office forums yesterday and saw someone saying Frozen is crushing Doraemon so far this week. That's true, but Doraemon always has horrible weekdays because it targets primarily children. Until Spring Break begins (where it's weekdays will be WAY higher than it's weekend admissions), it'll only be doing 20-25% of it's business over the weekdays vs. the ~50% or so for everything else.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking Pg. 179 (Frozen breako
It stands at 21M or so as of Friday. Possibly about 29M by Sunday. Then it has 2 weeks of Spring Break, where it could get 6.5+5.5 from the weekends and more than that on weekdays. So 60M by its 4th Sunday? Ralph dropped very fast after Spring Break, it even failed to get a 4x multiplier from its 3rd weekend, so that gives Frozen about 22M more, though the higher PTA and better WOM should push it close to 90M.
Is that reasonable? And is 100M in play?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking Pg. 179 (Frozen breako
It all depends on how it holds post-Spring Break. April 7th onward will be the most important days/weekends to watch.
It can pull in these huge numbers and magnificent holds for weeks or even months, but go on to have really disappointing late-legs like how a lot of even well-received blockbusters end up behaving since they're released during extended holiday-frames. Wreck-It Ralph (far from a blockbuster) is a good example, and so is Monsters University.
It looked like Monsters University was going to reach ¥10 billion (~$100 million) even after 5/6 weeks in release, but its legs post-Summer/Obon were quite disappointing and it ended up grossing ¥8.96 billion ($91 million). Obviously that's huge, but the excellent figures and holds (even increases) for over a month were misleading. Toy Story 3 is another example. After the crazy first month and beyond that it was having, the odds of beating Pirates 3 (¥10.9 billion), Finding Nemo (¥11.0 billion), and possibly Alice (¥11.8 billion) were really high, but it came to a complete halt after Summer/Obon and stalled earning ¥10.8 billion, ranking it 4th among Disney's top-grossing films in the end.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Elsa reigns supreme)
Weekend Forecast [03/22-23]
01 (01) ¥670 million ($6.6 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 2 02 (02) ¥285 million ($2.8 million), Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 3 03 (--) ¥260 million ($2.5 million), God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) NEW 04 (--) ¥150 million ($1.4 million), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) NEW 05 (03) ¥110 million ($1.0 million), Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 2 06 (--) ¥80 million ($780,000), Lone Survivor (Toho-Towa) NEW 07 (--) ¥70 million ($680,000), Saving Mr. Banks (Disney) NEW 08 (04) ¥65 million ($630,000), RoboCop (Sony) Week 2 09 (05) ¥60 million ($580,000), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 4 10 (06) ¥50 million ($480,000), The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 6
>Frozen should remain in 1st until mid-April, and be prepared for incredible figures until at least then, too.
It was really, really strong over its first set of weekdays, exceeding ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) on Wednesday; and after yesterday (Vernal Equinox Day), it's either just shy or already exceeded ¥2 billion ($20 million) heading into its second weekend. Expect to see a 10-day total over ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) after Sunday.
The Japanese cover of "Let It Go" has also become a huge hit, possibly explaining why the dubbed version of the film is crushing the subtitled (~80/20 split).
>God's Medical Records 2 opened yesterday (Vernal Equinox Day), and the numbers I saw were good, but below expectations. And this mornings/afternoons ticket sales aren't impressive, either. Doraemon will likely beat it over the weekend (which despite Frozen, is still performing very well), so it'll have to settle for 3rd place.
>The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opened earlier on Wednesday earlier this week. Why? I don't know... Wednesday releases are usually reserved for Obon or New Year, and even then they're rare. But it has been doing alright and may end up a decent earner for Fox.
>The Eternal Zero will fall out of the Top 10 this weekend (unless it pulls off some increase) after spending 13-consecutive week there. It may exceed ¥8.5 billion ($83 million) on Sunday, too, drawing closer to 7 million admissions, and becoming the most-successful original domestic live-action film since the 1980s.
It will be the film Frozen will have to beat to win the 2014 crown, unless this Summer's Memories of Marnie, from Studio Ghibli and director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Miyazaki's chosen successor), can repeat the success of his directorial debut - Arrietty. Then we'd have one interesting 3-way contest.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Elsa reigns supreme)
Alright, so Frozen looks like it's going to see a second weekend increase despite no weekend holiday support and having already opened to a huge number. A lot of blockbusters pull off sub-20% or single digit drops due to the sheer demand, but it's really rare for one to see a second weekend increase without any kind of holiday boost.
And Disney is reporting a 7% increase, so...
Weekend Estimates will be posted soon.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Elsa reigns supreme
Weekend Estimates [03/22-23]
01 (01) ¥816 million ($8.1 million), +7%, Frozen (Disney) Week 2 02 (02) ¥272 million ($2.7 million), -32%, Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 3 03 (--) ¥139 million ($1.3 million), NEW, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) DEBUT 04 (--) ¥120 million ($1.1 million), NEW, God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) DEBUT 05 (03) ¥106 million ($1.0 million), -45%, Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 2 06 (05) ¥54 million ($530,000), -45%, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 4 07 (06) ¥51 million ($500,000), -42%, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 6 08 (07) ¥50 million ($490,000), -37%, Silver Spoon (Toho) Week 3 09 (04) ¥36 million ($350,000), -64%, RoboCop (Sony) Week 2 10 (08) ¥26 million ($250,000), -47%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 14
-¥22 million ($210,000), -48%, Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) Week 4 -¥15 million ($140,000), -54%, 12 Years a Slave (Gaga) Week 3
>Frozen.... pretty unreal. It's going to be tracking ahead of Toy Story 3 and Monsters University for awhile, and depending on the lead it gains before those two films received their Summer/Obon Festival boosts, it could end up challenging them.
¥8 billion ($80 million) looks more than likely now; ¥9 billion ($90 million) is doable; and ¥10 billion+ ($100 million+) will be difficult, but there is a chance.
>Disastrous start for God's Medical Records 2. It's only going to make 50-60% of the original.
No estimate for Saving Mr. Banks was released, but it will be in the Top 10. Near the bottom I'm sure, but still there.

I also included Arrietty since it earned over ¥9 billion (over $100 million in 2010), and its director has a new film coming out this Summer, Memories of Marnie, that has potential to post big numbers (especially now that he's chosen as Miyazaki's successor). So let's track Frozen up against the best of the best above: Frozen (2014)¥763 million ($7.5 million) ¥816 million ($8.1 million), +07%, ¥2.800-2.900 billion ($28-29 million) *Estimate*

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Elsa reigns supreme
The Eternal Zero exceeded ¥8.5 billion ($82.8 million) with 6.93 million admissions over its 14th weekend of release.
It has now out-grossed 2004's Crying Out Love in the Center of the World to become the highest-grossing original domestic film since 1998's Bayside Shakedown. And since Bayside Shakedown was based on an incredibly popular TV drama, if you wan't to rule it out, then The Eternal Zero has become the highest-grossing original domestic film since 1986's The Adventures of Milo and Otis.

I doubt it does Escape Plan numbers (which made about $7 million) and earns $4/5 million with some luck. Arnold >>>> De Niro.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Elsa reigns supreme)
Weekend Ranking [03/22-23] 01 (01) Frozen (Disney) Week 2 02 (02) Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho) Week 3 03 (--) The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Fox) DEBUT04 (03) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 3 (Toei) Week 2 05 (--) God's Medical Records 2 (Toho) DEBUT06 (05) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 4 07 (07) Silver Spoon (Toho) Week 3 08 (--) Lone Survivor (Toho-Towa) DEBUT 09 (--) Saving Mr. Banks (Disney) DEBUT10 (06) The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 6 >Frozen as reported increased in its second weekend, but both Disney and estimates were... LOW! The film actually increased 13% taking in ¥872,269,400 ($8.6 million) with 680,855 admissions. This is the 9th biggest second weekend since at least 1998 (no weekend data prior to this date), and the only film since then to ever open above ¥500 million to see a second weekend increases without Holiday support.
And as equally as impressive, its 10-day total reached ¥3.01 billion ($29.6 million) with 2.43 million admissions. It has an extra day in release when compared to The Wind Rises (¥2.85 billion) or Monsters University (¥2.49 billion), but this is the second highest two week total for an animated film since Ponyo (¥3.23 billion).
Eventually it should lose its momentum once Spring Break is over, allowing the films it's tracking ahead of currently to catch up since their holidays boosts came later in their runs. But if it keeps up this pace... ¥10 billion ($100 million), while already a possibility, becomes more likely.
>The Secret Life of Walter Mitty saw a decent start with ¥147,534,700 ($1.4 million) with 112,880 admissions on 594 screens. It opened last Wednesday, so its 5-day total managed to break ¥330 million ($3.2 million). I'd call this a good opening, more than most probably expected it to do. It may have a chance at reaching the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.
>God's Medical Records 2 is a major bust and the first big bomb of the year. It only grossed ¥98,460,300 ($970,000) with 80,913 admissions over the weekend on 325 screens. It did open on Friday due to the Holiday, bringing its 3-day total to a more respectable ¥214,840,000 ($2.1 million), but the weekend frame itself is down 60% compared to the first film and the 3-day total is still below the first film's 2-day by 21%...
>Lone Survivor debuted on 202 screens to ¥53,421,900 ($525,000) with 43,131 admissions. Could have down a little better, could have done a bit worse, in the end it's just meh.
>And finally, Saving Mr. Banks had to settle for 9th taking in just ¥47,835,600 ($470,000) with 37,764 admissions on 223 screens. The lack of any award attention this past season really hurt its potential, what little it probably had to begin with anyway.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Queen Elsa of Japan)
Wow, so not only will Frozen now fly by $1.1 billion, it actually has a shot at passing Transformers 3 ($1.124 billion) to become the #6 movie of all time WW, and pass Ice Age 4's international gross ($715.9 million) to become the biggest animated movie of all time overseas. Amazing run!
