Harping on him saying he was his own hero is narrow minded and overly literal. You're missing the point. As for him bringing God into it, so be it, he didn't at all do so in the manner you're portraying. The mere mention or praise of God for you may induce waves of anger, but he and many others feel differently.
It just seemed like a most egotistical speech to me. He could say he was always trying to improve himself, and he could thank God. But he didn't. He said he was his own hero, and that God gave him opportunities and helped his career.
And then his speech would have been bland and regurgitated.

That is maybe true. But it was also one of the most honest speeches I have heard in quite some time. He just said what he thought and didn't give a fuck about what others think of it. I am getting so tired of all the "Ohh, my fellow nominees were so awesome too and thanks to everyone and their mother for putting me here and I am so humble and happy". Screw that. You win the Oscar, you go on stage, you're happy that you are on there and not the motherfuckers you were nominated against. If you don't have the right then and there, to think that you're just fucking awesome and own the rest and the rest can go and fuck itself, when do you?

ALL of the speeches were good specially from leading actors and actresses. Cate's was good as well but it went tooooo long. MM's was great if you see what he was aiming for and maybe not the literal meaning (maybe he is too much into True Detective ). Leto's speech had the touches of world piece which is great as well. I liked Cate's overall speech but some pieces from her 2 minute thanks was coming out as trying too hard. Lupita did a fine job in maintaining balance.
