Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast [02/22-23]
Saturday Estimates (02/22)

¥111 million ($1.1 million), -21%, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 2
¥66 million ($650,000), -6%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 10
¥65 million ($640,000), 0, Kamen Teacher: The Movie (Showgate) NEW
¥53 million ($520,000), 0, Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) NEW

¥45 million ($440,000), +43%, Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 3
¥41 million ($400,000), -13%, I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 4
¥39 million ($380,000), +157%, The Little House (Shochiku) Week 5
¥31 million ($300,000), -45%, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 2
¥23 million ($220,000), +10%, Lee Daniels' The Butler (Asmik Ace) Week 2
¥22 million ($210,000), -22%, Rush (Gaga) Week 3
¥16 million ($155,000), -43%, The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 4

Now that the crazy snowfall has gone away, seniors are coming out of their homes in full force this weekend. The Little House, with 77% of its audience over 50, was seeing dreadful numbers over the past couple weeks due to the snow, but its looking to explode this weekend now that its audience can get out again.

The Eternal Zero had to relinquish its 8-week hold of the 1st place last weekend, but looks to be defending the 2nd place position in its 10th week. It usually plays stronger on Sundays, so it may even see an increase over the weekend. Its total should be near ¥7.9 billion ($77 million) after Sunday. Very, very few films have managed to remain this strong after 10-weeks, and with a incredibly likely 10th weekend still over ¥100 million, I'll compile a list for this evening to compare to past major blockbuster titles.

About as expected for Kamen Teacher it seems.

Quite good for Kick Ass 2, already outgrossing the original in a single day. Not that its a fair comparison though considering the first film didn't even see 10 theaters.

The first Thor grossed ~¥550 million ($6.8 million), and the sequel will surpass that mark this weekend if it didn't during the weekdays. The past two weeks Japan has been hammered by record snowfall, so everything has slowed down considerably due to the weather.

It should finish with ~¥700-750 million ($7-7.5 million) for a ~30% increase over the original.

Thanks. Yen has depreciated significantly since 2011. So it has not benefited despite improved yen gross.

I think it'll do about the same numbers as the first film even with the better release date.

Opening of around ¥250 million ($2.5 million); Total of ~¥1.5-¥2 billion ($15-20 million).

Worst cast I think is 15% decline (giving it ¥1.4/1.5 billion) that The Two Towers saw after The Fellowship of the Ring, and best case is probably a 30% increase (giving it ¥2.1/2.2 billion) that Return of the King saw over The Two Towers.

I don't think it'll get anywhere near a 30% increase though given the hype that The Return of the King had, which was also greatly boosted in Japan thanks to it sweeping the Oscars the same time it just opened there. Finale films or trilogy conclusions generally see significant gains, and The Desolation of Smaug is neither. There and Back Again will likely see a decent increase, though.

The Lord of the Rings:
¥9.17 billion - The Fellowship of the Ring
¥7.90 billion - The Two Towers
¥10.32 billion - The Return of the King

The Hobbit:
¥1.70 billion - An Unexpected Journey

The release date for AUJ wasn't good which is why I believe DoS could stay flat though I am expecting a small increase for it with good WOM.

Weekend Ranking [02/22-23]

01 (01) The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 2
02 (02) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 10
03 (--) Kamen Teacher (Showgate) DEBUT
04 (04) I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 4
05 (--) Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) DEBUT
06 (03) Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 2
07 (11) The Little House (Shochiku) Week 5
08 (05) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 3
09 (07) Rush (Gaga) Week 3
10 (09) Lee Daniels' The Butler (Asmik Ace) Week 2
11 (08) The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 4

>The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji earns its 2nd week on top, dropping an impressive 16% to earn ¥235,771,300 ($2.3 million) with 177,155 admissions. Its 9-day total is up to ¥805 million ($7.9 million) and 620,000 admissions.

>The Eternal Zero holds strong in 2nd place in its 10th week of release. Its total has now reached a staggering ¥7.82 billion ($75.8 million) with 6.37 million admissions after 65 days. The film has slowed down slightly (25/30% weekly drops vs. 10/15% for example), though it still looks good to exceed ¥8.5 billion ($85 million) and may hit 7 million admissions. It's going to be a real challenge for anything else this year to beat it, the only possible contender I see is Studio Ghibli's new film in July.

>Kamen Teacher opened on 138 screens via Showgate to gross ¥109,179,300 ($1.1 million) with 85,074 admissions. An impressive showing for a Showgate release, and a decent opening overall.

>Kick Ass 2 debuted to ¥78,322,600 ($770,000) with 58,073 admissions on 215 screens. This is almost 16x greater than the opening of the film film, though that one only opened on 4 screens and only played for a month. And it's a pretty solid result overall, too. It should be able to reach ¥400 million (~$4 million). Which, if BOM is accurate, would make Japan its third best market behind the UK and France.

Not sure where to put this but since this is a Japanese movie I will put the information out here.

Oddly enough Howl's Moving Castle was released on 19th March in Singapore. I love the movie but this is just TOO late to catch it in theaters now.

Corpse do you know if it is still releasing in any other markets, re-release in Singapore or just the case of a forgotten movie releasing in Singapore?

EDIT: Just found out there is a bunch of classical Japanese animation movies that have been released in past few weeks. They might be having some Japanese animation film festival or something.

I was afraid for The Hobbit earlier this week when screen and showtime distribution was revealed (it appears to be playing on far fewer screens), but morning/afternoon ticket sales are actually looking quite good.

I'm working on the Weekend Forecast now.

Has The Wind Rises been released in Singapore yet? If not, maybe they're screening Miyazaki's past films before it opens?

Weekend Forecast [03/01-02]

Image

01 (--) ¥320 million ($3.1 million), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) NEW
02 (01) ¥190 million ($1.8 million), The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 3
03 (--) ¥140 million ($1.3 million), Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) NEW
04 (02) ¥110 million ($1.0 million), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 11
05 (03) ¥65 million ($630,000), Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 2
06 (04) ¥60 million ($580,000), I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 5
07 (05) ¥50 million ($490,000), Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 2
08 (06) ¥45 million ($440,000), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 3
09 (07) ¥40 million ($390,000), Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 4
10 (08) ¥35 million ($360,000), The Little House (Shochiku) Week 6

>The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is shaping up to be the first imported film in 24 weeks to claim the #1 spot at the Japanese box-office. Morning/Afternoon ticket sales are very solid, granted it doesn't appear to be playing nearly as wide as the first film, but it should have no problem seeing a good increase over the original. An opening over ¥300 million ($3 million) is reasonable. The film also opened on Friday, so a 3-day total of ¥350-400 million ($3.5-4 million) is doable.

Changing the release date back to Spring from Winter looks like it was definitely the right choice. Orlando Bloom (Legolas) being in the film is an asset the first film was missing, too. Judging by the performance of The Three Musketeers (Japan was its top market worldwide ahead of the US), he remains quite popular in the market even after his Pirates/LOTR success.

>Kiki's Delivery Service, Toei's live-action adaption of the book (now mostly known as the Hayao Miyazaki film from 1989 that kickstarted Studio Ghibli's future), was expected to be a total bomb, and ticket sales are mostly suggesting as such. It likely won't debut to much more than ¥100 million.

>The Eternal Zero is now entering its 11th weekend at the box-office and will exceed the ¥8 billion ($78 million) milestone over the weekend.

Since Saturday is March 1st, it's a discount ticket say so expect a boost in weekend admissions, and depending on ticket sales, possible great holds for some films.

666 [18] - Refugee in Tokyo (Week 2)
652 [46] - Thor: The Dark World (Week 5)

Keep in mind that Saturday was the 1st, a discount ticket day (40% off), so big drops are expected on Sunday. Even still, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug should still get near or just over 20,000 admissions tomorrow, so 50,000 for the weekend at Toho Cinemas looks resonable.

50,000 admissions here would give it 225-250,000 overall, so an opening weekend of ¥300 million ($3 million) or maybe slightly more is looking likely. ¥300 million exactly would be a 36% increase over the opening weekend of the first film.

Has The Wind Rises been released in Singapore yet? If not, maybe they're screening Miyazaki's past films before it opens?

Yes it is Miyazaki film festival (8 movies) followed by the release of The Wind Rises of 20th March. I am excited to watch that one in theaters ;)

36% increase is good for Hobbit and it might have better legs than the last one....hopefully.

Corpse with this opening can it do $30m in Japan or $25m stays the absolute max?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (The Hobbit opens)
I'm not calling for a 36% increase yet; sometimes films that open on a discount day (1st/15th of each month) can see huge drops the next day and go on to have poor legs. Last year's Oblivion is a key example of this.

However, an increase of 25% should be the minimum over the opening weekend of the first film. It should be on target for a ¥275-325 million opening weekend, which will result in about ¥2 billion ($20 million) with a solid Spring Break at the end of the month. Legs won't be as strong as the original film since it had a subdued opening and the benefit of New Year, but reaching ¥2 billion ($20 million) would still be almost a 20% increase over the first film's total which would be quite impressive. And admissions will see an even bigger increase since 3D is already starting out at a meh ~40% (which isn't too bad actually. Gravity aside, nearly every film has a 3D share below 30% now).

Of course, since the Yen has strengthened by about 20% since 2012, so the USD total won't really see much of a gain.

And in the end, any increase will be a good increase. Japan is a market where a lot of sequels have a really hard time matching the success of their predecessors until the final film is released (excluding those that have 10, 15, 20+ installments already). It's standard for trilogies and the like to see a sharp decline with the second film to then increase with the third installment. LOTR, Star Wars, Spider-Man, etc.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (The Hobbit opens)
Weekend Estimates [03/01-02]

01 (--) ¥292 million ($2.9 million), 0, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) ¥232 million ($2.3 million), -2%, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 3
03 (02) ¥139 million ($1.4 million), +11%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 11
04 (--) ¥132 million ($1.3 million), 0, Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) DEBUT
05 (04) ¥69 million ($670,000), -13%, I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 5
06 (03) ¥66 million ($640,000), -40%, Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 2
07 (07) ¥57 million ($550,000), -3%, Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 4
08 (05) ¥53 million ($510,000), -32%, Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 2
09 (06) ¥42 million ($400,000), -37%, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 3
10 (08) ¥38 million ($370,000), -25%, The Little House (Shochiku) Week 6

>Solid for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. If the estimate holds, it's about a 32% increase over the debut of the first film (only about a 7/8% jump in USD though). It also opened on Friday, so a 3-day total of ¥360/370 million ($3.5-3.6 million) is likely. This will also mark the first time since September (24 weeks ago) that a Hollywood film has claimed the # 1 spot in Japan.

>Really good for The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji. Admissions are up enough due to Saturday (~20%) that it might see a slight increase over last weekend when actuals are released.

>The Eternal Zero looks to have remained in the Top 3 with a 30%+ increase in admissions in its 11th-weekend at the box-office. Very, very few films have earned an 11th-weekend above ¥100 million (I'll have a list up later), and it no doubt has crossed the ¥8 billion ($78 million) mark now and might be up to ¥8.1 billion ($79/80 million).

>Kiki's Delivery Service disappoints as expected. A live-action adaptation wasn't anticipated in the slightest.

And keep in mind the estimates can change quite a bit with actuals due to tickets being 40% off on Saturday. Usually reducing an estimated drop by 10/15% counters this, but sometimes a few films end up well outside that range making estimates rough on these type of weekends. Tiger & Bunny is the one most likely to see a big change since its tickets are normally ~15% above the average.

Weekend Ranking [03/01-02]

01 (--) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 3
03 (--) Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) DEBUT
04 (02) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 11
05 (04) I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 5
06 (03) Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 2

08 (08) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 4
09 (06) Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 3
10 (12) The IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 6

>The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug debuted to ¥313,266,250 ($3.1 million) with 244,577 admissions over the weekend on 681 screens.

The opening is +42% better (+15% in USD) than An Unexpected Journey in gross and a very impressive +67% boost in admissions thanks to the discount Saturday. Also of note, is that this one opened on almost 200 less screens than the first film, so the opening is moreso impressive. It won't remain ahead of the first film by this much since it opened on a discount weekend and having Spring Break isn't as good as New Year, but it should have little problem out-grossing the first film and will probably exceed the ¥2 billion ($20 million) mark.

This is still a FAR behind the Lord of the Ring films, but it's a good improvement over the first Hobbit release.

>The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji continues to do well and has exceeded ¥1.2 billion ($11/12 million) after 3 weeks of release.

>Kiki's Delivery Service (not to be confused with the Studio Ghibli animated release, this is a live-action adaptation from another studio/distributor) opened on 281 screens to ¥127,660,300 ($1.2 million) with 116,857 admissions. This is an expected mediocre number.

>The Eternal Zero remains very strong in its 11th-week of release, down only -7% week-to-week and has now earned ¥8.09 billion ($78.6 million) with 6.61 million admissions after 72 days.
