No real surprises actually. The only really real surprise of the show was when Idina Menzel almost made it through the song with cracking.

It didn't help they had boring montages. They need to really cut that shit out. I am also pretty sure it was longer than last year, but am not sure about that. Your review of the Oscar show is spot on, cause that's how I felt. However, Ellen was funnier than McFarlane, but that's not saying much. Actually, it was one minute shorter than last year.

Oh please, I'm not a big double M fan, but his speech was good and delivered terrifically. His point was that he's always trying to better himself, always trying to live up to the ideal person he wishes to be, and while he fails from time to time, that striving has and will continue to make him a better man.
It's a good message, thumbs upping a Hitler comparison is just silly.

McConaughey's speech was probably the highlight of the ceremony!
Solid show all up - despite the predictable winners.

I believe Leto gave the absolute best speech of the night.

You're missing the point. As for him bringing God into it, so be it, he didn't at all do so in the manner you're portraying. The mere mention or praise of God for you may induce waves of anger, but he and many others feel differently.

Seriously. If you had an issue with the speech, you have an issue with yourself. You're content with being who you are now, and never want to be better.
That's why he's an Oscar winner, and you're not.
Also, I don't know how/why, but Idina seemed REALLY nervous singing. This stage was a tad bigger than Broadway.

Re: Official 2014 Academy Award Viewing Thread
Rather than doing random montages, such as the "heroism" one conflating Schindler, Superman, and Kevin Bacon's Footloose character, perhaps they could have created short videos built around the characters and themes of certain nominated pictures. One, for instance, highlighting the real Solomon Northup or one including actual photographs and stories from the Magdalen laundries (the subject of Philomena). Or have astronauts and scientists react to Gravity's portrayal of space travel.
Perhaps this would bore people, but I believe it could be insightful and enhance the ceremony.

Re: Official 2014 Academy Award Viewing Thread
I notice these were the first Oscars since the expansion of the field in which not a single one of the Best Picture nominees opened outside of "the season" (September to December). The 2012 lineup included one: Beasts of the Southern Wild. 2011 included several from earlier in the year: The Help, Midnight in Paris, and The Tree of Life. 2010, too: Inception, The Kids Are All Right, Toy Story 3, and Winter's Bone. And 2009: District 9, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, and Up.
Interesting downward trend.

Re: Official 2014 Academy Award Viewing Thread
Show a hero montage that has three appearances of Superman and not show Christopher Reeve once but show Jaden Smith in Karate Kid. I'm sure Daddy insisted on him appearing or he wouldn't present the last award.

Re: Official 2014 Academy Award Viewing Thread
My final thought:
It is interesting the hate that has geared up here towards Ellen. On my Facebook wall, she has been all the rage, and on the Florida news broadcast that premiered after the Oscars, the local commentators had nothing but very positive things to say. Now I will say Ellen was far from great and not even all that good, but in no way, shape, or form did she suck. Now I know it may be trendy to say that here, but she did a decent job and made for some memorable moments. It had its moments of awkwardness, but the pizza bit and the twitter bit worked in the sense that they made a memorable impact. So props to Ellen; despite the haters (who were going to hate you no matter what you did) you did alright. Now please, lets get someone else to host. I vote Kevin Spacey.

Re: Official 2014 Academy Award Viewing Thread
Im really happy with the wins, although i would of loved Gravity winning BP but everything else is OK. Im a big Jennifer Lawrence fan but Lupita winning is very well deserved. Same with Sandy, i would of loved her to win but Cate's performance was miles better.
Oh, yall bitch way to much specially about Ellen, she didnt do that horrible. It was an enjoyable and VERY predictable award show.
