Best Adapted Screenplay

A layperson may believe it is harder to spin a story out of whole cloth, but the art of adaptation presents its own unique and intense set of challenges. In various situations, a writer is forced to condense or expand upon the characters, stories, and themes present in the piece they are adapting and also uncover how to convey what began on the page (or on the stage, etc.) via the language of cinema without sacrificing the intended impact. And, of course, "adapted screenplays" come in various forms: every James Bond film is described as such simply because it features the character of James Bond, however removed from any hint of the original stories of the 1950s and '60s, which differs greatly from, say, a writer crafting a faithful adaption of a beloved and canonical novel. This may be perceived as an unjust failure of the category, but such is life.

In 1853, African American carpenter and musician Solomon Northup, born free, published a revelatory memoir describing twelve years of captivity and abuse in Louisiana after his abduction while traveling in Washington, D.C. 160 years later, writer John Ridley helped bring the sad, yet hopeful story of Solomon to the screen with 12 Years a Slave, honoring the arc of the man's experience, and also his voice, to provide a disturbing, sober, and straightforward depiction of the nightmare of the slave trade.

I doubt anyone expected Before Sunrise to be the first film in a trilogy as it charmed art-house audiences in 1995. Over the course of Before Sunrise and Before Midnight, however, Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy turned their solid initial achievement into a masterful statement on the complexity of a relationship and the various factors (age, chance, nostalgia, responsibility) which bring people together or tear them asunder. Even though each film amounts to a type of extended, intelligent conversation within a limited amount of time, the Generation-X love story of Jesse and Céline has become, in its way, mythic and universal, and many consider it the ultimate artistic achievement of the creators in front of and behind the camera.

An observant and unflinching three-hour adaptation of the French graphic novel, Blue Is the Warmest Color charts the evolution of heroine Adèle as she graduates from secondary school and begins to train as a teacher while also exploring her sexuality with an older art student, Emma. The scope of the screenplay by Abdellatif Kechiche and Ghalya Lacroix results in almost unprecedented clarity and depth, honestly and wisely capturing the rhythm of the characters' lives, and provides the firm ground upon which stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux construct astonishing performances.

Short Term 12 is the feature-length version of writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton's celebrated short film of the same name. The story of a youth counselor trying to guide and heal her charges despite not yet conquering her own personal demons, the screenplay has won praise for its nuanced characters and its careful consideration of their shared plight, as well as a portrayal of life in a home for troubled children many describe as realistic.

After smashing headlong into the Wall Street crash of the late 1980s, Jordan Belfort abandoned his ambition to be a legitimate trader and instead forged a new path, earning (or stealing) a fortune through investment fraud and leading a fast-paced lifestyle as dangerous as it was luxurious. His meteoric rise, out-of-control high, and not-so-awful punishment and fall are dramatized by writer Terence Winter in The Wolf of Wall Street, based on Belfort's autobiography. People have debated whether Winter's hip and profane screenplay indicts its criminal protagonist or celebrates his debauched glories. (Or both.) Similar conversations, of course, swirled around cult favorites Scarface and Fight Club. Either way, to generate so much debate is in and of itself a viable achievement.

Just fell asleep when it started and woke up right now, and it appears I didn't miss much at all. It seems more like we're trying to emulate the actual Oscars that trend our own impression on the awards season.

Before Midnight or Blue should win but I believe Wolf will win this.
