Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
The release date change is a factor in the different run the second is having. As is the fact that the first was abnormally huge first weekend for a non sequel.

I sitll think it is absolutely CRAZY that we're looking at a multiplier higher than 2.5 for this film!

The release date change really has a big hand on this films legs but then again it goes to show how INSANELY CRAZY were the legs of first movie.

Well, it looks like this could be the worst what went wrong thread of them all! Its likely going to make the top 10 of all time list with $420 m + and win the year handily...

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
I think the thread should be renamed..
Why on earth people think a film can open to 180-200 million in 2D and forget that all films are not super frontloaded and still gross a lot of money thread....

Despite its location, I see this thread as an artistic criticism, not a financial one. The film really is horse shit.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
I looked it up and the original Hunger Games adjusts to higher than the original Pirates adjusts to. But that sequel opened to 168 million and did over a 3X multiplier. why did hunger Games stay flat in admissions when Pirates 2 sold over 10 million more?

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
it is especially odd when you consider that Catching fire was better received than its predecessor, while Dead man's Chest was widely considered worse, if not bad. I think moving The hunger Games to summer could have helped it break out in a similar way.

Dead Man's Chest was considered bad?

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
I don't think Dead Man's Chest was regarded in the same way as Catching Fire, but it was entertaining to the masses, and for that alone it was not considered bad. It was lowest-common denominator film-making for critics, though.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
While I still like Dead Man's Chest, it's not good when you need to have a character specifically dedicated to expositing the confusing plot every fifteen minutes. ARRRR DAVY JONES' HEART.
That being said, the wheel fight is still amazing and most of the comedy bits hold up. DMC is a great cable movie, one that you can watch any half hour segment of the movie and then walk away satisfied.
As for the question, there was just more room to grow for Pirates. Hunger Games was a new franchise, but it was also the spiritual successor to the recently concluded Harry Potter and Twlight series. All those fans, plus the curious were drawn in right away and there wasn't really any room to improve.

Pirates was a slow burn sensation, Hunger Games was a sensation out of opening weekend. Plus Pirates was more of a crowdpleaser and the audience probably grew a lot because of home video, I didn't see the first Pirates in theaters.
