Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
It needs ~$150m going forward, or 2x its Thanksgiving weekend gross.
I think it's definitely possible. Looking at the list of top 5-day Thanksgiving weekends... most of the movies on that list were able to double the 5-day gross over the remainder of their run (including New Moon and Breaking Dawn 2). So we're headed to at least $410m or so...
And what's to say it behaves like a Twilight going forward? It hasn't resembled Twilight at all. If it behaves like Skyfall... or HP1... or, noodle on this, Twilight 1 (yes) ... it will cross $450m.
Not guaranteed, of course... but I think (critically-acclaimed/ audience-approved) movies with $75m (3-day)/ $110m (5-day) second weekend grosses are outliers, even in the world of blockbusters...
And in this particular case: I don't know that we can properly gauge remaining demand for the film coming off a record-setting holiday weekend. It shattered 3-day and 5-day Thanksgiving gross records by roughly ~$15m and ~$30m, respectively... that's a record that stood for over 10 years...

Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
See the thing is that you can't compare CF 10 gross to TA or TDK or TDKR and other mega openers because Thanksgiving skews things.
I think the best comparison is GOF so 420-430 seems right.

$400m was in play even after that opening but it depended on this weekend which is what everyone else was saying.
$450m is still a long shot.

Yeah, $450 million is still a very long shot. After that weekend hold it went from 0% probability to 5% probability.

Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
Still people are getting confused.
What CF had in the last 5 days was a holiday period and not a normal 2nd weekend.
So you can't compare CF to TDK and TA and extrapolate as unlike those films CF will face a large drop in the 3rd weekend.
The only film that CF can relate to GOF and based on that it could do 430+ million.

Its crossing $400m for sure now and getting the domestic crown as well. Does anyone still think it will do $450m+ ?

Maybe not .....but it will be the highest BO in the US of 2013. Hobbit 2 will not even come lose. And thats certainly something.

Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
This club is a fail. The Hunger Games movies will always largely make the same because it's a YA adaptation. These sorts of movies, like Harry Potter and Twilight, are so easy to predict. The next one will make around $390m-$410m, and the final one will make $400-$425m. The audience never really expands. The only thing that changes from film to film is the fan attendance. For the first film, 85% of fans turned out, whereas for the second one, 95% of fans turned. This will keep going until the final one because it's not going to interest non-fans at all.

Yes. A book that I have never heard of before the first movie didn't interest non-fans at all!
Harry Potter books are SO MUCH more popular than Hunger Games it's laughable. Yet Hunger Games made more movie money? Very odd, don't you think?

Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
Not sure I get Algren's reasoning here. It's going to be the biggest film of 2013 (a fairly remarkable feat), going to gross over $700M WW, but shame that they aren't going to expand their fanbase beyond non-fans? Definitely a large chunk of its business is those that have not read one of the books, or at least didn't until the movies came out.

HG the series has outsold Harry Potter the series on Amazon when counting both electronic and hard bound copies.

Harry Potters best selling book, 44 million, almost DOUBLES The Hunger Games best selling book, 23 million.

Re: The Hunger Games - Catching Fire 450m+ Club
Only Harry Potter, Twilight and LOTR are really thought of primarily as book adaptations, though I may be missing other examples. I feel like there are some who might not even realize The Hunger Games was a book series first.
Not saying a HUGE percentage of people.

I realized it was a book series after i saw the first movie, much like the rest of its audience.
