 Re: Christmas Day numbers
Walter Mitty and American Hustle being relatively close to Wolf is impressive, nice spread of numbers between all the films. weekend #'s will be interesting.

I'm happy for Walter Mitty.
Saving Mr. Banks is, not surprisingly, gaining traction.

Bit surprised that Hobbit came down from $10m to less than $9m.

The holdovers have faired well and it looks like there is no outright flop in the bunch (not including Believe).

Lacklustre for Grudge Match. Hopefully it picks up.

You won't see any disagreement from me there. The film screams out to be tightened.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
Cinemascore is irrelevant considering it polls just 5 theaters. Inception had just B Cinemascore and really good legs. Wolf should do fine.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
I would not say it is irrelevant. You can extrapolate a fair amount from a few theatres. A flat C score means audiences are by and large not enjoying the film, particularly considering the opening-day crowd is a type of built-in fan base (they are eager to see and enjoy the film they have selected and paid 10 dollars for).
And Inception received a B+, with an A among younger moviegoers. Not a B.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
In other CinemaScore news: B+ for 47 Ronin.
Out of the eight films to open wide since December 18th, only Saving Mr. Banks received an A.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
Wolf doesn't seem like a Christmas type of movie. It's score might also be a bit lower because of that as people expected some kind of a feel good movie, which Wolf I'm guessing probably isn't.

Magnus wrote: This Christmas won't top last years but it's not far enough behind that it will cause 2013 to lose to 2012. Last year the Top 10 on Christmas made $68.2 million. The nine films Nikke guesstimated add up to $64.5 million, so day-to-day they're gonna come really close to each other, and since the holdovers are so much stronger than last year it should mean stronger increases leading into the weekend, so it should be able to crush last year's post-Xmas weekend with ease. Pandya has $9.15 million for Wolf, barely giving Hobbit the edge for the day. It is worth noting BTW that Shutter Island had a "C+" from Cinemascore while still managing a 3.0 multiplier. Though I agree that $100 million suddenly looks like a skeptical proposition. Its legs from here on out will be interesting to see. I think that's actually really good for most of the openers save Grudge Match. I was skeptical of Walter Mitty and especially 47 Ronin breaking $5 million for the day, but they both passed the mark with ease (Walter Mitty by over 50%). We're still looking good for at least eight films topping $10 million this weekend, but Grudge Match and Catching Fire could join them, giving us an entire Top 10 of $10+ million grossers, which would be a pretty insane note to end the year on.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
Holy crap at Frozen's Thanksgiving-to-Christmas retention. I think this is the first time since 101 Dalmatians in 1996 that the go-to family film for Thanksgiving has been the go-to family film for Christmas. at Dinosaurs' number (which is on BOM). Yes, it increased 65%, but it still made less than any day of its OW. Even Frozen made more yesterday than it did last Friday.

 Re: Christmas Day numbers
47 Ronin's official estimate is $7 million. Considering it's a martial arts film from a not-well-known source material (in the US anyway) being sold entirely on Keanu's star power, I would consider that a really good number. Alas, it also cost $175 million, so it's still not good enough. Pity.
$7.4 million for American Hustle. Really good number, if it follows Gangs of New York it could go as high as $24 million for the weekend, though $22-23 million sounds more likely. It might even top Wolf this weekend, which would be really impressive.

I don't know why they invested that much into this movie. #hollywoodlogic strikes again.

I think that's actually strong for Ronin considering it looks like DTV garbage.
