This time I say it will be different.

Hobbit 1 makes more than 2 and 2 more than 3.

You did it read it here first.

an the fact that you will see

Spoiler: show
the dragon

in the second one wont change anything.

It was read much earlier and said by me and others in the other threads first. Moving Hobbit 3 back to Christmas was a smart move, it wouldn't have crossed 200 million in the summer

It had Transformers, Fast 7, and was opening the same weekend as Planet of the Apes with Hercules the following weekend. That's a lot for a mostly filler film coming out 7 months after the last sequel (Which we also know means a much lower gross) Then Guardians of the Galaxy and Ninja Turtles. Opening against Apes didn't even guarantee a #1 opening.

Actually, when it was moved out of July, I believe that it was still X-Men on that weekend and Apes on Memorial Day.

Either way, it would still be destroyed if it were in July, even in a scenario where Fast 7 is moved.

July as it stands now (if FF7 moves) is weak. Regardless its staying in December and will do well for it. Even if its filler - Im sure its a better film than 90% of next summers blockbusters.

The fact that people have already seen this movie product will definitely squelch the WOM on the interminable sequels.

1. I don't think many fans will actually not go to this even if they didn't like the first.
2. I think the first film was actually well-received by general audiences in it's home viewing run.

If it drops off, I don't think it will be by much. I do believe there is a chance for this to increase on the first film.

I'm going to be watching the first one shortly, because I REALLY want to see #2 in theaters.

The Dragon is played by Khan though, and we know how much audiences didn't respond to him. You know at some point in the film someone is gonna scream Sssmmmmmaaaaauuuuuggggg!

Time names Desolation of Smaug one of the best movies of 2013. This club is dead. :shades:

Ignoring the really awful cliffhanger, I'd expect DESOLATION OF SMAUG to have much, much better WOM than AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.

the dragon will help, plus there are some better scenes in this part (Mirkwood and the Spiders for instance). I think it will do over 300 million and could again top 1 billion WW.

If I were you, I probably wouldn't be quoting a list that places Fast & Furious 6 even higher ;)

The Hobbit: There and Back Again will undoubtedly outgross The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. So this club, while seeming successful now, will fail come next December. It has the finale factor. Never underestimate that.

The spiders scenes were not great. They didn't conjure up any fear like with Shelob in The Return of the King. The best scenes in The Desolation of Smaug were the whole final act in the underground lair featuring Smaug, Gandalf vs. big white beast/Sauron/evil darkness and the escape from the Elves kingdom.

I don't think it is a given yet that Hobbit 2 makes more than the previous one, though I hope it does. Its quality doesn't really have much to do with its BO IMO.

In this case, its quality is linked to its box office as I feel it will make slightly less than the first one.
