Her is doing very well and surprising The Great Gatsby Directing nod....but The Wolf of Wall Street is kinda not doing that well and most surprising: Captain Phillips ignored for everyting, other than its screenplay.

David will be happy with Redford's nod. Gandolfini gets a nod for Enough Said just because he died. But I am pleased with Lurhmann getting a Best Director nod.

Weren't it you who said that if someone is nominated he/she deserves it/is worthy? Either way - he might have been ignored if he had not died, but he is not undeserving. He really is good in the film.

Nope. But that doesn't matter.
When someone dies, the panel are not awarding it on his/her performance any longer. They are awarding on sympathy and respect for his/her entire career as an entertainer. It's not an equal playing field with the other contenders.

Re: Washington DC Film Critics Association 2013
Algren is not wrong, even though James Gandolfini delivers a very strong, warm performance in Enough Said. It would be ignored if her were alive, rightly or wrongly. Too subtle a character and film. Glad to see Redford and a surprising best-director nod for The Great Gatsby. The final category is amusing, particularly since D.C. is all but wiped out in two of the films.

Gandolfini would have been ignored had he not died, but undeservingly so. He is wonderful in the film.

I'm also sure that he would have been ignored by you if he had not died. It's the same mentality. We feel that we should honour someone more merely because they cannot defend themselves or some other bullshit. It's the same with Paul Walker. The guy was a terrible actor. Now, if you say that, people will lambast you and say "he wasn't the best, but he was this, that, and the other". Death changes peoples opinion of other people.

Robert Redford should stage his own death, then drop down from the ceiling with a cigar in his mouth to collect his Oscar.

Well, Gandolfini has done many good performances over the course of his life but only now, on the year of his death, does he get recognised by everyone. Seems a bit strange. I mean, sure, you may have said he was great regardless of his death, we will never know.

I foresee this Original Screenplay lineup (American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Enough Said, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis) being duplicated at the Oscars.

Even though I don't find TGG great of a movie, Baz was whimsical as ever in his direction. Dr. Lecter wrote: Captain Phillips ignored for everyting, other than its screenplay. Deservedly so.
