Oh, right, this happens every year. I know why they do it (they are the Writers Guild of America at the end of the day, not a simple critical body honoring fine film writing), yet it always annoys me a tad. ;)

Fruitvale Station, Philomena, and particularly 12 Years a Slave are obviously the ones which could have contended if eligible.

I have a hard time seeing Captain Phillips winning a top writing award. It is such a detail and procedure oriented screenplay. Very journalistic. It is not full of juicy dialogue and flair.

I wonder if Before Midnight is eligible.

I agree. But so was Zero Dark Thirty and it was a bunch of screenplay awards, I think.
